Now I know this is about cars and all but it's also about racing so lets show some support to our fellow racing enthusiasts (sp)
Follow this link to send a letter to Mallard and Dick (Hubbard that is)

nice idea, but trying to get them to RAISE the noise limit?? fat freakin chance me ol' china!
I think talk of 'closing' the speedway is really jumping the gun (but hey, it makes great media so who am I to spread the truth?). (not aimed at you DM)
If they don't comply, they get fined for breaching their noise limit on the resource consent (minimal amount) . If they don't comply by a long way (very unlikely I can assure you given the lengths the drivers are going to), then they get done for 'contempt of court' and have to pay a big sucker fine (but not likely to be the max of $200,000 unless they took the mufflers off). So far, I have not heard one iota from a reliable source that was privy to the Environment court about actually stopping racing there all together.

I appreciate what your saying CK, and certainly in your line of work I would expect you to know more about it than me ... But, I would hate to think that a facility like the speedway "could" be closed down due to a handfull of moaning wankers who bought their houses knowing there was a speedway nearby and who then start complaining about the noise in the hope that if it does get closed down their property values will sky rocket. :brick:
I think it was foolish to cut down the trees that were acting as a partial noise barrier ... Why was this done?? anybody ??
Often people complain about "somethingorother" and then do nothing to effect a change ... I'm trying to encourage folk to Do something.

Just a rumour, but I heard the other day that the land was under a perpetual lease to the city on the condition the the land was used for the purpose designated under the original lease - breach of lease contract, namely the Zoo and Speedway, and the land reverts to the original owner.
Other news - noise complaints against the Mt Wellington Kart track...suprise,suprise...well,well,well.There never has been a lease on this track,it has always been a weekly or monthly rental, and it's been like that for a hell of a long time.I remember going there over 40 yrs ago as a young boy when it was a dirt track and the karts had lawnmower engines and wheelbarrow wheels. When we got older we took our dirt bikes out and rode around the track - so I've been riding that track before buckets and motards....next to the track was a dirt oval,we used to ride that as well.No one remotely living anywhere near, the rot sets in.

when i lived in Stratford.... that is in the shadow of MT egmont...
we live over 10km away from the speed way... and every night that we forgot it was on, we were reminded of it... read the noise! we didn't complane as it was only for a short time and we didn't want to spoil thier fun!
we used to think about the home owners across the road... for about a second!! but they new it was there before they brought!!!!

Interesting letter to the editor of The NZ Herald this morning - quoted some of the typical noise levels of things other than the speedway. Amazing how loud some of them were, some well over 100dBa.
We can hear the speedway from our place in Birkenhead, as can my sister-in-law's family in Oratia.

personally i think that damn airport with its noisey airplanes is also far too noisey, especially in the flight path they should move it down away from the precious Auckland homeowners to the North Waikato or something!

moi? my whatever do you mean, CK :)
I signed the petition this very minute. Once again, my interest is purely academic - I am a motorsport fan of many flavours, but I just can't get into speedway.
Which reminds me in a roundabout way :Offtopic: , went to the Cock & Bull on Saturday night and found (unsuprisingly) the sick stench of wet rotting carpet, a pungent reek of flat stale spilt beer and a slight hint of urinal cakes. I miss the smoke already.

Yep - as soon as the speedway gets shut down, I will start my campaign to have trucks banned from using the state highway I live on. Of course, I knew the road was there and that trucks use it when I moved in, but that isn't the point, is it? I'll also support the closure of all airports around the country, because the noise will always affect someone, no matter how remote it may be.
And when all this noise is stopped, won't we live in a wonderful, idyllic little country...
 I'll have to put the original pipes back on my CB1100, and park up the Elsinore for ever!!
