Was at Cyclespot Honda yesterday with my girlfriend checking out bikes, came across a nice 99-02 Yamaha R6 and thought "hmm, should be reasonably priced, maybe she'll like it".
Then i turned over the information tag attached to the bike to see:-
Price: $8490
kms: 92,648km
When the salesman came over I asked him if the mileage was correct, he said yes it has 92,000km. I replied in a very discerning voice "and you want $8490 for it, are you serious"... He seemed upset that i didnt agree with their pricing, but fuck them... I paid $8000 for mine, it had 23,000km on it as well as a fair few tasty mods. I think it's disgusting that they would expect such a price on that bike, especially knowing that perhaps some poor sod will walk in their not knowing much better and actually pay that price.
For what its worth i sold mine with 58,000km on it for $5k.

Certainly over the top, but we pay far too much for bikes here from new. I stopped in at a local Triumph dealer in the Gold Coast before Easter to find the 07 Speed Triple retailing for $15999AU. Not a runout special, but the standard price and yet they're $20990 here. They are even cheaper in the States.

Go to Europe, we got it good bruvah. Second hand bikes over there are beyond stupid prices, and insurance is even more rediculas and compulsary.

So AU$15999 at the present exchange rate is NZ$17976. Add GST and its NZ$20223. Plus freight from Aus and its NZ$20973.
So you could save $17 by buying one from Aus and shipping it back. :bleh:

Salespeople will always work on the rule of thumb that there's a sucker born every minute. It's up to the purchaser to check out all options and sort out which is the best buy for them. Sure you might miss out on an "ultimate bargain" occasionally, but there's always another waiting further down the road if you can be patient. Remember too that sometimes the salesperson can secretly agree with you but it's not in their employers best interests for you to publically declare that. And if you consider the bike to be so overpriced then you did the right thing by walking away, no matter how appealing it might have otherwise been.

Thats what you get when you go into dealers, I wouldnt really expect any different (not saying I agree with it tho), they need to make money and they dont actully make much off new bikes, theres more to made in gear.
I dont think I would buy a bike from a dealer unless it was brand new, which is a long time away.

Not with you on that one. In the UK, secondhand bikes are throwaway prices. I sold my old bike worth no more than $2500 equivelent for $5500 in NZ. It was 30% more than I paid for it 4 years ago.
I doubt anywhere in the developed world has higher secondhand bike or car prices than NZ.

You are right. I forgot that they have GST as well. So that makes the NZ bike almost 10% too expensive.

Cheers for that, but ₤7799 is less than $19500 and that’s for the new 2008. Maybe Jap bikes are different?

I have a new ABS Tiger on its way over from the USA. All in all I estimate I have saved somewhere between $5-6k. At 70c to the US$ I wouldn't have bothered but as I got almost 81c to the US$, I couln't resist. I will post up the actual figures in a couple of weeks.

It's only extortion if he's forcing you to buy it ...you clearly exercised your right to walk right on. He'll get the message in about two month's time when he hasn't shifted it and it should come down to 'meet the market' - ie about $4.5k:devil2:

It's a phenomenon known as 'Dealer Price' got something to do with the fact that you have some comeback if the bike falls apart after 3 days. Dealers should also be doing stuff like new sprockets, chain, oil filter, air filter, oil change if required and should be checking shit out for you generally to give you peace of mind with the purchase. Buying a used bike from a member of the public is a case of 'Buyer Beware' hence the price drops in accordance with this risk.

It'd be interesting to know how many dealers actually do this.

You've never tried to buy a used vehicle in Australia. Used cars price are insanely high (since they don't allow used imports from Japan).
Also - in Australia you have to pay an additional tax to the state government (stamp duty) to transfer the title of a used car or motorbike.

Those prices are actually quite similar. Excluding the on-road costs:
$15,999 AUD + 3% Queensland stamp duty = $16,478.97 AUD
$16,478.97 AUD = $19,283.75 NZD at today's cross market rates (0.854552).
$19,283.75 * (112.5/110) = $19,722.02 to equalize the different GST rates
$20,990 / $19,722.02 = 1.064 which means you're only paying a 6.4% premium over the Australians.
I think this is reasonable considering the additional freight costs, the cost of hedging the currency, and the smaller market in NZ.

I dont think it's fair to call this extortion - as a buyer, you have every right to see the price and walk away. Welcome to a free market.

Fair call Forest. I'd only heard about stamp duty in relation to property, not motor vehicles.

Read the latest bike trader and there are dealers trying to sell older 07 883 sportsters for more than a brand new one. An 08 883 is 12600 but last year they were 14200 (i think)
The dealers arent stupid, I guess they think someone will pay more for last years model. Maybe they are collectors items?

If you are free to walk away without buying it I believe that's called the free market.

Really? I rode one for a night and it was a piece of shit. The seat was so hard, along with the suspension, that my nuts just kept bouncing into the tank. The bike is so short that your arms go straight down and your hands feel like they're next to your hip bones.
There's just no way you can take a bike like that out for a long ride. Even the guy who owned it agreed. Yesterday we went from Welly to Palmerston and back, the day before we went to Wanganui and back - just because we could and it was fun and comfortable. An R6 couldn't deliver that.
Yep, they go, ferk they go. But is that it? Not for me it isn't anyway.

Yep with the way the $ is it's a good option - the new version of my bike, the 690 Enduro, is reputedly going on sale for US$8500, (or NZ$10.5K @ 81c) whereas over here I've been told $17K. So If I decide to buy one I might as well fly over there & get it, spend a few weeks touring around then ship it back, even with all the bureaucracy sorted out I'd still come out ahead. Another dealer did tell me NZ$15K instead the other day but still...
Cheers
