Just as an idea - How about a locked sticky (with a single post in it so there arent a million replies) that lists whos banned and why.
Refering to Skidmarks post - he says he didnt know why he was banned (and certainly had the wrong idea in his post), but it would:
a) Let people know who is out of here and if / if they are coming back
b) Serve as a warning to others

There are privacy issues to be considered here. All people who are banned or suspended will know the reasons why. In some cases it is easy for an asute member to "join the dots" and figure out why Member X may not have been seen around for a while, but in some extremely rare cases this is not the case. Moderators believe it is inappropriate to enter into discussions about this with anybody other than the offender.
Most absences are prefaced by a series of run-ins with the site's officials in the form of infractions. These are like warning shots. As the infraction count increases, site priviledges decrease, to a point where a stay in the sin bin results.
The theory is that behaviour will be modified by consistently applied sanctions. Consistent excursions to the bin of sin may be deemed to require banning. There have been a few of these over the years. But most infracted members generally gain an understanding of where the "line in the sand" is drawn.
It's not a perfect system. But apart from the inane mutterings of former communist party members and other idealogues, it does a job and most members understand why it's used.

Holey cow Hitcher didja come up with that all by yaself or have to refer to a hoity tioty book to get those words?:devil2: (pt)
In other words --the guy concerned knows darn well why hes been banned -Usually hes had a lot of warning. And the reason why aint anybody elses buisiness.
Mind you Hitcher a kinda Name n shame list could be an idea- Their login name and how long theyre banned for. -Can't be an issue as its used in the real world-Boooze shops etc have a list of pictures and names of people they have trespass orders on

Arbitrary punishment dispensed in secret seldom meets any standards of fairness justice or equity.
And the latest example appears to indicate a further level of banning, outside the infraction system and entirely arbitrary. Despotic, some might say.

Nothing to 'live down', just did what anybody else would/should.
But you (maybe) and several others seem to mistakenly believe KB is run on some form of democratic system...

I notice that the individual's user title can be changed to "is currently sulking in the sinbin".
This was common practice and let everyone know that the naughtyness had exceeded the limits.
However it has not been seen recently. Have the mod's been using this system in breech of perceived privacy issues, or just cannot be bothered using it?

There are privacy issues to be considered here.
Convicted criminals names appear in the court news in the newspapers or on TV when they're locked away. ("Crossing now to our court reporter with news today of further suspensions on the KiwiBiker website")
I think a locked list of those suspended showing their KB handle, their offence or a link to the posting(s) that caused it and the length of their suspension would not be a bad thing. Would be a good practical demonstration of what is not acceptable in KB world and it would also allow the mods to provide justification for suspending someone.

True.
Would prove/disprove the claims the mods were egotistical Nazis.

I have 2 pm's from Steam confirming that he wasn't kidding. He really did want to take some time out.
This place can be too much for people at times but it gets it's hooks into them and they need a little help to step away from kb. Anyone in that situation can request some time out, ie I will temporarily ban/sinbin them (an actual time limited ban might be better cos then you can't post at all rather than have your posts moderated as being sinbinned requires).
If you really do want to take a little bit of time out then I'm going to impose a minimum limit of 3 days for any requests as anything less than that is just people being time wasters, ie frivolous hey look at me I'm temporarily banned **giggles** people.
Well I guess a ban from 8.30am to 4.30pm wouldn't be a bad thing for me as I really do spend to much time here during work hours. Shit, the boss just walked in ... bye bye....
The ban system only allows intervals of 24 hours. Sorry, but I don't think I can help out with a daily banning.

24 hours, yes. It's pointless though and I won't do it (see above)

Quite, in fact there may actually be money to be made in starting up a KB anonymous support group in each NZ region.....
