I'll be there!

Purple death won't be making an appearance, it suffered a slight problem in pre season testing. NZ's top engineers are hard at work to repair the damage.

How ever, The DR. is in the house with 200cc of pure grunt, 21 inches in size up front and take a 18" in the rear.. It's tough!

Yep, I totally agree with you there. The A class get to have there races without having to worry about someone being in there way and us B class people actually get to be competitive without worrying about holding anyone up. Its nice not having a male/female split but an ability split instead. Im very happy about the situation and we still get heaps of riding in as well! :niceone:

Gee a million photos & not one of either of the two bikes I was riding. I must have been being particularly unstylish that day. -But you did get a close up of my ear plug. Good photos.

Neat day, good fun. Have a bit of work to do, the brakes on the 100 stopped being so 'stoppy' & the rear of the bike was covered in oil. From the shock. Which is why it felt somewhat bouncy. Need to get some weight over the front of the bike, took me till the end of the day to learn to ride it.

The 50 is always fun to try & get the most out of it. Even Drew was impressed even if it did earn him a session in the Bum-pants.:Pokey:

I'll need one of those 200mm+ lenses to compete with this lot - only got a 18-55mm right now (but it's what you do with it that counts!):shit:

Shutter speed is probably a bit quick if you're trying to pan but you're right about the tripod, will help to eliminate vertical movement. I'll bring my 75-300 up next race day and you can use that if you want.

What I can say with my hand on my heart is that when I did do it (in the actual point races) I was not passing anyone that was *actually* ahead of me...so while I might have got past some people those particular manouevres didn't earn me any places...it just felt a lot safer to pass SOME people in that place than it would've been for me to undercut them in the proper corners.

Disqualifying for it? Meh, whatever the man in charge decides will be fine with me, I'm not gonna cry about it. I know I didn't get any of my placings from cutting those particular "corners" but if I am to be stripped of my first placing - I'll just have to ride harder next time and btw I will (in light of the comments about cut corners) be looking to stuff my bike up the inside of anyone in my way next time. ;)

Stay calm. Just going to add my 10 cents. (Value added special)

I don't think there should be any corner cutting during races. It's outside normal racing rules. On a proper race track it's usually grass and rumble strips anyway. The reason for the side wall tyres is so you can lean the bike over them with catching them.

Part of racing is getting past backmarkers before the rider behind catches up to you. Therein lays the issue I have with the practice. By cutting the corner you gain advantage over the rider chasing you.

In saying all this I would not happy to see disqualifying, banning, black flagging or any other such measures as it's not in the spirit of the class. But neither is cutting corners.

Just my opinion.

And yes; I did cut that corner twice during practice. Once on purpose and once because I fucked up. I think most of us cut that corner at least once...

Yep, same. That and some of the people in the 'B' class are very unpredictable and all over the place so I had to cut the corner to stop myself from ramming "someone" up the arse a couple of times!!!
Its all about learning and having fun though at the end of the day. Right?!

I hear what you are saying Skunk (regarding the rider who is trying to catch you from behind)..that makes sense though my thinking on that was that they too could take that line.

My thinking has come from having sat and watched a fair amount of bucket racing over the years and having observed it happening quite a bit, I was of the understanding that so long as you weren't making places it wasn't a big deal - seen guys doing it heaps and never been told not to. Infact I was doing it during the first two practise rounds and no one even mentioned it then....

Anyway - I am calm...and as I said if it is determined that those of us that did take the straight lines get disqualified I'll suck that up and take it like a man.

ok well here's a good time to talk about 'that'

Yes one should ride the course if one is racing. I pulled a young lad up about it on sunday. . . Only to have to do it a couple of times myself later in the day. But the difference is doing it for gain on purpose.

I remember when I first started the tracks were much bigger & it was hard to work out where the tracks went, but now we have an issue with a small track and some hard obstacles if you get it wrong & no extra room to 'go around the outside'.

It is a feature of our track & we almost have to have an honour system. Sadly in the heat of the moment this is often lost. I've been leading a race to come up on a backmarker through a chicane & had to brake. Only to be passed on either side by pos 2 & 3 (no telling who, but they do the organising).

So what does one do? I always try to follow the track, but sometimes the speed differential & level of commitment is a bit scary when lapping people. At Kaitoki while backmarkers were all part of the game of getting through traffic, there was always the latitude of some room to do so. If I come upon someone with literally double their corner speed I have to make a judgement that I will squeeze through as long as I time it right & they don't move off the line they are on. It gets a bit like those movies where they have to jump through the ventilation fans.

Not trying to sound like a wanker, but to go fast on that track you need to commit to a line at the edge of traction & the right timing. I don’t have anything left in reserve so to try & cut 40kph off my speed inside 4 metres isn’t possible, so you really have to slow earlier to get past people. . . But then risk being passed by people breaking the rules, or at least lose enough momentum to lose the position.

I apologise if some people think I cut them up, have been accused of that before, but only when I’m being pursued by someone rapid with the same intent. Those that have raced with Jay will know what I’m talking about. Fishe & Bayden are just as rampant.

Then you get the backmarkers that try to defend their position against people lapping them. Grr!

The A & B grade has helped here but we need to make sure that the right people are graded correctly.

This is supposed to be fun, but it is also competitive esp in the A grade, I think some people would be a bit surprised how often they nearly get collided with.

It was me. Its a bit different tho when your on a bike with a shit load more power than other's its probabaly safer to just wait your turn to over take them on the straight's instead of flying passed them cutting corner's.

Well that's racing init?
Definitely, if you're a back marker getting lapped - please straighten up and take to the outside. Er... don't change your line mid corner tho' :shit:
I would and would hope to receive the same in return (if I ever get that fast~!). Oh yeah, and stick to the 'track' I guess...

Shutter speed is probably a bit quick if you're trying to pan but you're right about the tripod, will help to eliminate vertical movement. I'll bring my 75-300 up next race day and you can use that if you want.

You use a Canon as well? Sweet - I'd be well keen to try the zoom lens.

Yeah, would have gone lower on the shutter speed for more motion blur effect but with hand-holding there was no way. I couldn't find the mount of my tripod that day but it's back again so next time will have tripod in tow.

Yeah, 30D. Got a 17-85mm IS lens that I normally use but have an old EF75-300 from way back in the silver halide days.

I'll need one of those 200mm+ lenses to compete with this lot - only got a 18-55mm right now (but it's what you do with it that counts!):shit:

A tripod would have made for some sharper shots too - I was hand-holding at 1/100th of a second while panning. Pretty chuffed with some of the better results.

All in all, good practice.

Mono pod is the way to go for panning shots, a tripod is too restrictive. I have tried with a tripod and didn't like it, have not used a mono pod yet however.

Last month the slowest shutter speed I got to was 1/200 and I did not zoom past about 190. Got some pretty good shots (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/image_browser.php?do=view&threadid=68538&censored=yes) with this set up last month.

Monopod or freehand (but my lens set up is too heavy for me to control effectively). There is a very good reason that you do not see tripods at motorsports events!!!

Regardless, I have a monopod if you want to borrow it for a day to see whether or not it works for you if you like?

Try a rubber band (old bike tube) around the tripod legs if you don't have a mono - that works. Also only 1 leg extended with rubber band works too but feels a bit unbalanced

Yeah, I'm not sure how accurate those results are, I think those may be the results Ms Number One wishes to be true, but I'm pretty sure I was further back in the first race. So there's a good chance you're correct there Mr VW... we may have to wait for the official results to be posted on the SCS website.http://scs.net.nz/results.htm

Focal length will definitely affect how slow a shutter speed you can use without getting blurred/shakey images. On my modest 55mm I can just 'barely' get away with 1/100th. Longer lenses will multiply the effect of shake'n'blur - kind of like trying to hand-hold a video camera steady at full zoom; terrible~

The rule of thumb for 35mm film is you need a minimum shutter speed of the reciprocal of the focal length. For digital cameras with a smaller sensor than full frame 35mm, you'll need to use the effective focal length in 35mm ff terms.

Eg, 55mm lens = 1/55s shutter speed (1/60)
200mm lens = 1/200 shutter speed (1/250)

But on a Nikon digicam with the "DX" sized sensor a 1.4x conversion applies:

Eg, 55mm lens effectively 77mm = 1/77s shutter speed (1/125)
200mm lens effectively 280mm = 1/280 shutter speed (1/500)

Of course, if you have 1/2 or 1/3 stop shutter speed steps you may find a closer match.
