View Full Version : Petrol station preference?

Maha
15th April 2008, 16:39
We have two here in Warkworth so there is a choice.
Mobil and Shell....Shell is my Preference but i mostly use the Mobil cos there's more room at the pumps. The shell is 'old school' ...a corner station with four pumps and two lanes that fit four cars only so can be a squeeze, But theres no bullshit with pre-pay. Question is...Do you have a Preference of which Petrol Station you would rather use? If there is a choice that is?
If you are out and dont have a choice cos theres only one? cant help that.
No reason need be given but if there is one....give away.
If you leave your house on your bike and need Petrol, which Station do you go to? Most of us have a choice.

Whichever station takes the discount vouchers... Down here that's 2 x BP and 1 x Caltex, though the Caltex only takes the 4c ones.

I've known Les Wilmot my whole life, and he's a good bloke! My Bro-in-law did his apprenticeship there.

Big. SHeltered. Short/no queues. Sell hot pies. Same side of the road as me so I dont have to turn around.

The name on the sign means very little at the pump.

BP, cos we get cheaper petrol there.
But when we do a big grocery shop and get a coupon for 20 cents per litre discount, we go to Pak'n'Save petrol.
Prepay hasn't really caught on here yet..(to my knowledge)

Funnily enough i do have an irrational lean towards bp, gull and to a degree caltex (the California Texas theme puts me off) Who would'a thunk it.

i used to work in a shell service station, maybe thats why i want to burn them all down :devil2:

mobil always seem "cheap"

I use BP but only because they give me AA points and there's a convenient one on my way to work. Oh and I get the 4c/litre discount because I shop at New World - so the fact they usually have the highest prices doesn't bother me too much.

Well ill either use Mobil or Pak N Save as i cant be bothered taking my helmet and ear plugs out to pay inside the shop i can just use prepay :2thumbsup no bullshitting around inside just swipe the card and get going.

Not worried about who charges highest cause i buy 98 and if they dont have that then ill go to the next one.

i'm out Snells Maha so use the BP out here, could actually call it a service station as they offer to fill up ya tank, unlike Mobil Warkworth..

If in town i use the Shell as they are good to.
Mobil i try to avoid at all times, ten times as many pumps but NO
service and on prepay.

I do not like to use the local Mobil station, prepay being the least it. I knew a woman who applied for a job there and laughed at what they offered to pay her. Pay peanuts get monkeys, and heaven help you if you want a gas bottle filled! Grrrrrrr.

I tend to use Shell. It's around the corner, and I feel that I'm getting more mileage from BP/Shell than pretty much any of the other one. Would need more serious experiments to confirm, though.

It's a shame they don't have 98 where I usually stop, though.

ZK-Awesome
15th April 2008, 17:53
Shell, cos it takes the supermarket fuel vouchers I "get" from work. Though these don;t usually do much, my scooter's 4L fuel tank means I rarely save more than 10c.

We have Mobilcard which gives us something like 0.06c/l off and Shellcard which gives us something like 0.03 or 0.04 c/l off, so we use either one of these.

Then, when I shop at New World I keep the 0.10c/l off voucher for BP and use that (and sometimes it is even 0.12c/l off)... but there is a grumpy old fella there, so I'll be avoiding the place when he is on the forecourt.

BP gets my vote because I like their "Ultimate" 98 octane gas.

Mobil is very very last because of their pre-pay policy and crap service.

G.A.S is second choice because they are community based operations keeping gas available after the bloody oil companies closed the last station in town. Eketahuna was one of the first I think and was the initiaivee of Warren who at that time owned the big Shell station on the Masterton through-road.

Pak n Save is next because they started the whole discout-for-groceries scheme and still give the biggest discounts.

The others I treat as much the same. Challenge was cool because Fletchers tried to give the finger to the oils companies - instead they sold out to them. We don't have Gull in this part of the world.

15th April 2008, 18:22
Caltex. No question I have less problems with blocked lines and better fuel economy in the 'busa (and every other bike I have ever owned).
Generally decision is based on location but if it is not too far out of my way then the choices go pretty much Caltex > BP > Mobil > GAS > Gull > Shell > Other.
No point in driving an extra 5 kms to save 5 - 20 kms per tank.:weird:
For service BP > Mobil > Caltex> Gas > Gull > Shell > Other. Commiserations to those that work for or own Shell or other branded gas stations.

Service does not matter to me because there is nothing a forecourt attendant can do I can't do myself without making less of a mess on the bike / car.

DingoZ
15th April 2008, 18:22
Bp for their 98.
And they take the vouchers from the supermarket. Saves a heap of dollars at the pump.

But if out and about, what ever one is on the way really. Caltex, and then the rest.

Mobil because I always liked their trucks when I was a wee lad.
I like to use 98RON where possible - its recommended for my engines.
And I like the EFTPOS at the pump - just swipe yer card, fill the tank, take receipt and leave.
Caltex is my next choice as 95RON is also fine in my bikes and car and I beleive their Techron is a clean fuel.
Gull will get my vote when E10 makes it to Tauranga.

But usually I base my decision on where I am and which servo is most convenient to me at that time.

EDIT: Just seen on C Live that Exon Mobil just posted the biggest profit in US Corporate history!
And their 4c discount is crap aint it?!!

My preference just boosted Caltex into the lead.

I did make mention of that very fact Kickaja, Its all about ''If'' you have a preference...eg: for particular fuel, we all would agree about not giving a toss if you are in need....and quick. This purely for research, and no im not planning on buying/working at a Petrol Station, just pick one, maybe choosing one that has your favorite colour perhaps?

Gas Stations get held up more often than Banks.

It's a courtesy thing, they don't have to serve you either, if you want the gas, you need to abide by the guidelines that they provide.

Petrol's petrol. It all burns. I'm surprised there are so many who are selective.

I don't believe in pandering to bikes. Mine are all jolly grateful there're getting petrol at all, not kerosene. Like I say to then "Drink it up and stop whining, there's a starving moped in China would be jolly grateful for that nice 91 octane petrol"

I use whatever is nearest when I run onto reserve, and whatever doesn't shag me around with prepay crap. Other than that, I don't really care.

There is a sticker on front window of every petrol station.

With a helmet crossed out.

It is a retail shop so it's like leaving your dog outside it's a condition of being on thier premisis, i have been known to just leave it on though, i do take it off sometimes but if i have put in say $20 aned have it in cash i drop it through the night pay window and knock on the window. and then make sure they acknowledge it, and then ride off.

People in the que inside give you the evils. but i have better things to do than stand in a que for 5 minutes, while they put through all thier jew vouchers, magazines and candy bars etc.

For the sake of $1 i cant be arsed with vouchers and crap.

LOL it's not hard you have to go in anyway, i just say i do not know how much it will be heres, x amount of cash, or my eftpos card. the thing is then they have you on the instore camera thats the reasoning for it is so you have to come into the store so they can fully identify you.

90% of stations in auckland are prepay now, with prices like this they just cant risk it. There are so many drive off's that it isn't funny.
