Hosts file is probably the best way to do it (though it can easily be circumvented by users who understand proxy servers).

On a vanilla WinXp system you need open the c:windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file in the notepad editor.

Add the following line to the bottom of the file:

127.0.0.1 bebo.com

Now save the file in the above directory with name "hosts" Make sure that you include the quotation marks in the save dialog box to stop notepad from appending a .txt extension.

This should stop casual use of bebo.com

Go to Control Panel.

Open Internet Properties.

Click on Privacy Tab

Click on Sites button.

Enter address www.bebo.com into site URL and press BLOCK button.

Bebo is blocked.

Of course if son has any idea of how a PC works he'll suss it quick.

Unless you give him his own account and don't allow him to change control panel options.

Seriously, the likelihood of your being able to do something that the lad can't circumvent, without installing a proper firewall or net nanny software is very low

But add ing a line saying

127.0.0 1 www.bebo.com

to the hosts file should be a primitive blocking device. The 127.0.0.1 redirects traffic to the bebo site back to your own PC. Where of course it will fail to find bebo.

Uninstall what software?

He wants to stop his home computer from being able to see the bebo website.

Two ways to do it:

1. If you have a fancy-pants ADSL router with a built-in firewall, like I do, just add 'bebo.com' to its list of blocked addresses. And remember to set it up with a password so that nobody else can just go in and disable that!

2. If you don't have a fancy-pants router, you'll need to install something like Net Nanny, and, once again, set your PC up properly so that whoever's being restricted by it has to use their own limited-access logon and can't just disable the internet filtering.

By adding it to the hosts file did you do something like
127.0.0.1 www.bebo.com

I can't see how that wouldn't work but ...

Another option. Do you run a firewall of some description (ZoneAlarm etc)
Should be able to block it in there as well. Can't say specifically how without knowing what you run.

pull the power cord out, and if he complains whack his arse with it?

Actually, that's the best fuckin' suggestion yet.

Take the int. cord riding with you ! If he's desperate enough to spend his pocket money on a new one, you aint gonna stop him gettin on the site no matter how hard ya try !

tried the privacy setting. didnt block bebo even when it was told to.

tried hosts file. didnt block it either. - although I am not sure it didnt save it as a hosts.txt file.. will check up on that.
standard winxp home with xp firewall. I dont run 3rd party software if I dont have to.

As for unplugging the computer. Not only is that a pain in the arse but he requires an internet connection for his study. Its just that bebo gets in the way and somehow research on african americans turned into painting some wall thing on someones bebo page.

And no, I am not going to sit here for 2 hours a day and watch him.

And for anyone who wants to suggest that he should just do as he is told think about how many times you flick up kiwibiker at work - you know you do.

I forgot to add that there is no way to completely prevent a child from accessing Bebo (unless you send them into the wilderness).

If he can't use it at home, he will go to a mate's house or an Internet cafe and get access to it there. Or even through his cellphone (if his mobile plan allows web access).

Kids are smart buggers. So you will need to be smart as well.

cowboyz
15th April 2008, 19:29
I dont care if he uses it. Just when he is surposed to be doing homework he is surposed to be doing homework - not bebo.

He is not real smart either.

To stop him listening to music while surposed to be doing homework I disabled the sound card and he hasnt worked that out yet.

There's always the old history trick , (not sure if one item at a time can be deleted from history) but if not, ya only have to have a nosy at history after study time and if he abuses the usage, take it off him next time he wants it outside of study ! Irrelevent if ya have it blocked, but ya will unblock it at some stage for him im sure !
I personally hate BEBO, Kids spend ten minutes on it and im spending an hour cleaning the spyware out of the pc rrrrrrr

thats how I snapped him surfing porn. I check history every time he gets off it and as soon as he gets off it. pretty sure he is on to that one now.

The modern way of life,at 13-16 we had penthouse and playboy to wonder about, now they have full xxx rated porn.Shit when I got my first video recorder the only porn was electric blue from video store, have seen worse than that stuff on sunday theatre.

Tough too work out,ban him from computer and your shit, could always let him loose on ya bike,it's only a kwaka.......:argh:Nah that'll be next thing he'll want, car and bike licenses.

Bebo can start out all inocent but some kids(and adults)can't work out fact from fiction.

this is 2008 not 1992. Computers and the use of the internet is a skill that is nessacessary (as well as a spellchecker) in this day and age. There is no advantage to be had by a ban of the computer. High schools expect the use of the internet to help with homework. And I would like him to do his homework. Bebo is a 13yr olds kiwibiker. It is just a distraction. got it blocked now so that should work for a while. And easy way to unblock it when I allow him to use the pc when he is not studying. No point in throwing the baby out with the bathwater...........

Oh and the porn thing. Yes. There is a thread round here somewhere I put up when I snapped him.
Porn mags when we were kids were nothing compared to the sickness that can be easily found on the internet these days.

Yep agree with the sick shit on the net vs mags 20 yrs ago,no contest there.Way too many differing porn sites verging on sick, sure tastes are personal, but when you hear guys/girls talking about sites verging on rape via drunken teens etc ffs.

Worst thing is when you can't figure out how to do anything off the computer get a kid,and easy as lol.

Is true re bebo/kb comparrison or youtube/trademe as well. Can only tell them what you expect of them, they don't understand the moral issues at their age.
Best of luck, don't envy you or the wife.Thank god my kids are 16,18 and girls,oh no lots of fun.No the feeling of 13 yr old going on 24yr.

The hosts file should work. If it doesn't then either you have done something wrong or the internet is being accessed through a proxy server - unlikely (check Internet options, connections, LAN settings).

Yes anyone can access the hosts file if they know about it. Two solutions to this, either set up two users, one that has change rights and one that doesn't.
Or just check the time stamp on the hosts file to see if its been modified and explain that an ass-kicking will be forthcoming if anyone touches it.

This software is really good for the sort of control you're after.

Otherwise just hack the hosts file.

All good, but hes probably a local admin, so he can just change the permissions back.
The simplest way, other than configuring the router, assuming he hasnt done Computer Science, is to have a second login just for him, a normal user account that has no rights to change the hosts file or IE settings.

If hes deleting the IE Cache, you can still see where hes been, DL this little utility and you can look in the index.dat file :)
