I am in South Africa, planning to arrive in New Zealand in january 2009.

I have a 2006 KLR650 which I really enjoy and I am not keen to sell it here and replace when I arrive in NZ.

My question: Are parts and servicing for the KLR readily available in NZ, as I don't see a many posts about KLR's on this forum?

Thanks

Jon

Yeah no worries with your bike here, a few guys have them, plenty of Kawasaki dealers, you will be fine.

Not A problem dude, very common bike, I got a 2008 model, no problems with parts and servicing.
Aftermarket parts are hard to get and usually come in via the states over the net, but standard stuff is not problem.

Hi Jon,

Parts are readily available, however can be expensive compared to other places.

I've imported a fair bit of stuff from the states, including a new tank and full body panel set, sitting here in boxes ( just in case ) :2thumbsup

I also have a spare rear wheel so I can run different tires etc

So, no parts aren't an issue

And let me know if you'd like a riding companion, I'm sure I could take some time off for some tour guiding

Cheers, Stu :scooter:

Hey Stu

Thanks for the info.

I am going to take you up on that "guided tour" offer when I eventually get to NZ, hopefully early next year.

Be good to see more KLRs around - over here seems most adventure riders are either one eyed DR650 fanatics or Eurosnobs :devil2:

To all you KLR riders out there.

I am looking at a 97 KLR, is that much of a risk?
It is on trademe at the moment.

Is that a good buy? Or too expensive?

cheers

Thats a KLX - not a KLR. quite a different animal, more dirt oriented than the KLR. USD forks, different engine. They had a good following but kawasaki only made them for a few years. Check out www.advrider.com/thumpers
Nice that it comes with the road wheels as well as the standards.
There's another on tm at http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Dirt-bikes/photos/a-166920101/p-70039577.htm

Hi there Wysper,

That's a KLX, not a KLR. :oi-grr:

Truckloads of differences about them :(

All fairings and tank are different and non-interchangable

Back Wheels are different to a KLR as I got what I thought was a KLR rear wheel off Tardme to use as a spare ( different tires for different trips etc ) only to find the hub is totally different. :weep:

Different Axle diameter and everything !!! :oi-grr:

You need to talk to that joker that was one of the 4 from Whangarei that took 4 bikes from South Africa to London. I have met him, and he thinks he rode a KLR, but it was def a KLX he took on that trip :headbang:

His tank fairings had KLR decals on them, but it was KLX fairings and Tank, and he had heaps of incompatability problems when trying to find spares and funnily enough, nothing seemed to fit!!! :girlfight:

Otherwise, if that is what you're after, the price is probably fair.....

Just my 2 cents worth.....

Cheers, Stu

Thanks guys

Thats my mistake!

I was considering either a DRZ400SM or a DR650.
They Yammie XT660 is too expensive for me just now.
Would the KLX be a good option also? Seems to be a bit cheaper, I just thought the age might be a problem too.

I would need it to be a commuter but able to have fun on short blats! If it turns out to be a style I like then I would look at something more serious.
The motard/dual purpose thing looks like lots of fun.

being concerned about parts supply is understandable when a KLR is involved

why - are you saying it is difficult to get klR parts? I could accept that klX bits might be a bit thin on the ground.

KLR's have a huge following in the States - go to ADVRider.com and search them.

Despite what our young morman friend says, they are known for their tractor-like reliability.

Hi Carver, I know from our past conversation:argue:, you have a thing against KLR's, but why exactly ? For a 23 yr old, you've owned a hell of a lot of bikes, and I wonder if you gave any of them a chance, or just rode them around the block and sold them off again ? :baby:

Did you ever actually have a mechanical issue with your KLR ?

For a bike that went 20 yrs without any major design changes, the must be pretty reliable by anyones standards.

I'm on my 3rd ( Left one in England after travelling, Wrote one off, and still got the 3rd ) so after about 90,000kms in total on KLR's without a single mechanical issue, I don't know why you have such an issue with them ? :(

Please elaborate for the rest of us..... :2thumbsup

Cheers, Stu

sure stu.
my one had pathetic brakes, used heaps of oil when it had 23,000kms on the clock, used to run badly after a thrash, the colling fuse blew once, all in the space of a month.
it was a 3 year old bike then!

Yes the old ones did have pathetic brakes, thats why they updated them on the '08s.
Yes they do use oil when flogged
And a fuse blew.

FFS!

Cheers for clarifing that Carver.

Totally agree about the pre 07 Brakes, I imported a 320 mm SuperMotard front disc, stops on a dime now..... :gob:

But the bad running and oil burning aren't normal ?

Ask anyone on this site who rides with me, mine doesn't get babies along by any means, but is only using about 500ml per 5000kms, and runs even better after a good thrashing... :eek5:

Sounds like the previous owner didn't take the time to run it in properly ? Both this one and the one I wrote off were run in by the book, working up and down the gears, loading and unloading engine with no continous long trips until after the first 5000kms. Bit of a pain, but the results paid off, goes faster the older it gets

Never had a problem with the cooling fuse ( maybe because I live in the cool south )

Cheers, Stu
