Well, he's not bothering me at the moment, but if he crawls up the stairs into the house or into one of my shoes or my cat, he may bother me then, especially if his bite hurts!!
I think I'll move him outside somewhere to do his business.
Thanks again everyone, I don't like to kill things unless they're going to kill me first.

If it were me id relocate him over the neighbours fence, reducing the likleyness of a repeat visit.

I ve had a similar problem with wetas this week. I had one in my leather jacket yesterday, and another one in my waterproof pants this morning. I only discovered they were in there once i was taking them off though...

Hi Mrs K, if I was you id google Sydney Funnelweb.Atrax Robustus--looks very similar to that . Hope its not coz The F.Webb is ptobably the worlds most venomous spider. The males are worse than the females.Luckily they dont drink or itd be like Jake the Muss with 8 legs.

Hey chrisso we dont have all your nasty oz spiders!

or do we :sherlock:

on this topic - if you have a nasty bug that you think is from off-shore and shouldnt be here, i've been told the correct process is to put it in a jar then chuck it in the freezer. Then contact MAF and they have a nice clean frozen specimen to examine, rather than guts with a shoe print, or something contaminated with pesticides etc.

I was bitten on the foot by a what I can only assume was a whitetail spider a couple of weeks ago. I was inebriated at the time of the bite, unfortunately, sitting and dozing on the couch in my lounge, so I only came to the conclusion that I'd been bitten when I noticed the two puncture marks in the middle of a painful red patch on my foot.

The approximately 1cm-diameter necrotic ulcer that formed still hasn't quite finished healing.

The initial pain level was about the same as a wasp sting, but lasted for a couple of days. After that, it was just sore to the touch; I had to put a band-aid over the bite to wear shoes without noticing it as I walked.

I ripped the scab off it a couple of days ago out of curiosity, and the hole in my foot bled quite copiously. Whitetail venom (if that's what it was) really does dissolve significant chunks of one's anatomy! I have a noticeable bit of scar tissue on the top of my foot, now.

I'm not arachnophobic, but I'd definitely rather put up with a few bee or wasp stings than get bitten by one of those bastards again.

I used to work in the produce department of a supermarket years ago and remember opening up a box of bananas one day and found a large strange looking spider in amongst the bananas, he was dead thankfully, but I showed the boss and he just shrugged and said something about him not hurting me as he's dead, did wonder at the time though how many non-native species sneak into NZ via banana boxes and such.

Supposedly whitetails are poisionous because they eat daddylongleg spiders, who themselves are very poisoinous but cant bite hoomans.

See a quack if those things don't heal, I know two people who almost lost limbs because of their bites :pinch:

Were they healthy adults?

My ex-wife's stepfather's mother lost half her thumb to a whitetail bite a few months before she died from cancer (talk about fate adding insult to injury, eh?)

Apparently young children and old or ill people are most at risk.

Yep. Well one munched party pills like they were going to be made illegal, so I guess only one of them was....

if it doesnt get worse you're probably ok (but i'm not a quack)

there's a lot of debate about whitetail bites - the scientists say there is not much evidence, and the doctors say the patient data says otherwise.....

I had heard that they ate all other types of spiders, storing the venom. Therefor the potency of the said venom would vary from whitetail to whitetail as it would be a compounded concoction of whatever dinner had been over the last few days for Little Miss or Master Whitetail.

It would explain why some people react differently to it, besides their respective strength or lack thereof in immuno defence.

Yes, that tallies with the progress of my foot.

As I said, it initially felt similar to a wasp sting. That faded, but the dermal layers around the bite basically rotted away (the affected area grew slowly over a few days) before clearing up and healing over. It very much seemed like an infection rather than an envenoming.

I can imagine how a compromised immune system could allow such a bite to cause significant problems.

As far as common spiders go, they don't come more common than this.
Bound to be one hiding between the buttocks of practically every human being.
Closely related to the also common Chocolate Starfish (see attached thumb).
Neither are particularly dangerous, but must be wiped periodically to avoid annoying 'Skidmarks'.

speaking of spiders... i found an avondale in my room the other day... needless to say i was paralised to the spot and screaming and laughing at the same time and calling my father to come and remove it... now, the thing is, no one wanted to go near the thing, just incase it decided to crawl or jump on someone... *shudders* so my father got the vaccume, extended the hose and his arm out as far as they would reach and sucked it up...

i'm sorry it may have died.. but it had to be done if i was ever going to sleep in that room again!! (now i'm all paranoid and check every corner of my room before i go to sleep.. heh)

I took a picture of it but it's not on the computer yet... the thing was so big it had it's own health bar!! (gamers will know what i mean) .... it was honestly as big as my hand spread out.. or almost anyway about the size of my hand spread out minus the tips of my fingers after the 2nd knucle...

My daughter and I found one outside her school a couple of years ago, a woman picked him up to show all the kids and it promptly bit her and refused to let go until after quite a few vigorous shakes of her hand. My daughter then scooped up the dazed spider in her lunch box and brought him home for us to keep as a pet, Mum is still none too pleased about it.

hahaha, a trouser spider, that's a new one!! I've had a few wetas in my boots, not nice to discover, especially when you've already been wearing them for a few hours wondering what's poking your foot!

A few years back my youngest daughter aged maybe 10, refused to put her shoe on because there was something in it. I am in a hurry to go out, grab the shoe, and while saying dont be so silly gave the toe a bit of a squeeze. This weta leapt out at me, I did the total girl thing, it gave me a fright! Sorted out the weta and the daughter and then asked my son to go and get my shoes for me from by the front door.

I go to put my foot in one shoe and meet some obstruction, well I squealed about as embarassingly as possible and threw my show across the lounge room. My son and my lovely man were pissing themselves laughing. My boy retrieves the shoe and shows me the cush ball he had put there to give me a "surprise" Some men are utter bastards really...LOL

I hate spiders, but I have a modicum of respect for them too.

I was bitten on the arse cheek by a white tail while sleeping in the Brides parents sleepout the night I had finished photographing my friends wedding.

Was sooo sick. THEN I just about died one morning when I got boy out of bed. I flung back the top cover and a farken big one came crawling out from between the two layers he was still in the bed. ick

So what's my approach to spiders?

Where I used to let them just go about their business or pick them up with something and pop them outside I am now a buddists nightmare - cos unless I can positively identify them as a spider that I know is harmless (and rest assured thanks to hubby I do know many of them) I squish em on sight now.

We doo seem to get some horrible big bastards up here.
