Wave disc's finally turned up today for the Aprilia & they looked sweet just in their box , but wheren't brought to hang on the wall . So of to the Bat cave to put them on which didn't take long but trial fitted them on the bike before torquing up just incase they migth be wrong ya never know ? . Front & back on & very happy with them . Next off to bead them in which will take afew rides but from the 40 ks I did tonight they are going to be Mint even from having Brembo disc's which are fantasic standard . $1300 to my door for these Braking Wave disc's from the Strada M/C though AF1 Aprilia in the USA is still cheaper than the NZ distributor in New Plymouth so all's sweet as . Will post up another review once fully run in which shouldn't take to long by the feels of them already

The Brembo disc are great but even with only 40ks on the " Braking " ones perform better already ! Stopped worrying about speed now adays it all about having the sweetest bike on the road now :Pokey:

I thought one of the big 'pros' of buying a 30k bike was that upgrades to basic stuff like discs wasn't necessary?

I was unaware that you could actually get extra prformance out of swapping discs out for stock ones in the first place :Pokey:

So is the reduced rotating mass actually noticeable, serious question. oh yeah, they look great mate.

Maate. Those will be utter shit. I'll take em off your hands for the scrap value of the steel. I'm doing you a favour there.:shifty:

You can buy a 1098Tri for 44K & still have to get the forks & rear shock tuned to suit our roads ??? go figure ! As with your own bike I see you have added bits to it . Just been very $$$$$$$$ doesn't mean it is perfect or what you want it to look / feel like mine does now & very happy too :Punk:

What do you reckon (just as a personal preference), hard core upgraded second hand bike, or almost factory new bike?

For me my 35K RSVR brand new verse secondhand for 20k was a no brainer , But its still had 6k spent on it to make it mine . Even Factory new Jap bikes aren't as good as they can be as with Italian bikes just depends if you don't mind it been like that or are ok with putting it right with modding it up with some better parts .

Well dropped bike off at Robert Taylors shop today & was happy it didn't rain as bike was cleaned yesterday & always like having it looking its best when it leaves home or getting worked on. Whats been done hummm more mods to the Ohlins forks , after the last fork mod Robert has yet another improvement a Race Tech High flow piston to put into them which he say will make them even more receptive to sharp hits a slower speeds so sounds sweet . Getting the headset bearings replaced while its apart to as these are getting abit old also . Still not sure what will happen to the rear Ohlins shock yet have talked abit about some mods which can be done to this as well but there is the option of having a TTX new generation shock made up to fit my Apirlia as they aren't making them for this bike so would be excellent to have the first TTX Aprilia in NZ but Robert need to come up with an offer that pleases my Bank account :Punk: LOL Hopefully bike should be ready for next weekend to try out the new stuff & post up a review of how the work has turned out .

Well shock & forks done now so thought might as well chuck the PCIII Power-commander back into the bike seen as I have a SBK Eprom for it now & could use a map programe from the list of RSV ones available . After comparing 4 other map specs picked the best one till I get it custom mapped . Goes into get Shims done next week here by an X-NZ road race Champion & have the throttle bodys reset as well as the TPS checked while there to get her all sorted . Then it will be finished . Next back to the TTR600 to put the Motard rims onto it . :2thumbsup

So would you recommend that i keep my Galfer Waves and swap out the new stock discs that have just been put on?

Sensei
19th May 2008, 20:46
Arghhh up to you the stock Brembo disc's are great , I just liked the look of my Braking wave disc's & they happen to work much better with less weight etc . Have my standard roto's in with all the other standard stuff off the bike for when / if I sell her . You can improve the standard rotor's by free the petal's on the back of the rivet buttons slightly to let them have abit more movement which makes them like a Full floating disc , Have a search on AF1 about doing this did my standard ones with great results & stopped pulsing also

Unfortunately they don't come stock with Brembos anymore. They come with Sunstar, well Braking-Sunstar as they're now called. I know the thread you're talking about, have read it several times. According to the literature I've read the Galfer discs are supposed to be fully floating anyway. I do like the idea that the wave discs dissapate the heat better, so if off on a blast you're likely less to suffer from brake fade than you would with conventional rotors. Just not sure what to do yet. I am selling the Galfers, but may yet change my miond, fit them and sell the Sunstars... I just wish someone would buy them so i can get the suspension to Robert Taylor and have somethign that handles a lot better than it does at the moment... I'll mull on it over the weekend... Thanks for the comments

Sensei

Yes Braking has joined with Sunstar they still make the Jap & Italian disc's & sprockets as well as their Wave disc's still . Why did you need to replace the standard disc's where they warped are damaged ?

mashman
19th May 2008, 21:16
Yup. the original discs had, what we think, were hard spots and pulsed under braking. So I picked up some wave discs from the UK in case Aprilia said no... which they did, but the tech at the dealers was a top man and swapped the ones off of their 07 demo for me... blardy nice chap... Hence left with 2 sets of discs, ha!!! Now if I can just get that shock back I'll have more new goodies to seel to noone ha ha...

As you may have already read on AF1 this is a common thing disc's pulsing etc best fix is bending the petal tabs or new rotors .

mashman
19th May 2008, 21:38
Must admit, I never really saw it as a fix. Primarily as the problem didn't completely dissapear in some cases, but it certainly looked like it helped to a high degree. Warps are one thing, but the hard spots still remain and whilst turning the discs into floaters helps, it's not a cure for nervous individuals such as myself... Fortunately the Prila was still under warranty so I was kinda covered...

Well my new bike mechanic phoned tonite to say my RSVR was finished not bad dropped it off yesterday afternoon . So after buying the bike at 8000k & now 30,000k of continuous redlining later & never been touched he tells me all the Shims are still all in spec so put her back together Sweet may just give it a thank you oil change abit earlyer than normal . Have been bloody impressed with the strenght of these Rotax motors from mates that have owned them & still have them to what I have done to mine over the last near 2ys. Some very nice Italian bikes on offer now as well as the new KTM range but will wait till the new 1200cc Aprilia come out before I think of buy again .:niceone:

The rotax does seem pretty bullet proof. A nice side effect for the bike i've always wanted.

Not feeling the pull towards the V4???

I have a falco here in the states.Love it.It just turned 46,000 miles(74,000 kms). The valve clearances haven't moved, since first checked at 600 miles. All I've had to replace is the starter relay, clutch slave cylinder seal and both brake light switches. The rotax rocks.

I would love a Falco - a vastly underated bike.

Just don't see any over this neck of the woods, though.
