Honest feedback.....
I'd really like to do this track date but I find it pretty difficult to justify the time and cost to travel to Taupo for just FOUR (http://www.motott.co.nz/rules.html) 20 minute riding sessions.
Despite running a professional well organised outfit, I think MotoTT have it wrong. They are making too much of a concession to a handful of Supermotards and hence not considering everyones need for time on the track.
I think they should be aiming at six 20 minute sessions with 3 groups. With the current format there's simply too much waiting around and not enough time on the track. They don't offer enough track time to justify the trip.

Maybe the fact that their track days are safer and have minimal crashes, comapre that to parting with your hard earned money?
I beleive that the four sessions have made it safer.
I'm in. But not with the normal $500 bike. I'm bringing my fireblade:D its more photogenic

That doesn't make sense to me at all.... I've seen crashes-a-plenty on their days (just like any other organiser), I've seen them operate without an ambulance and I've seen aggressive and dangerous racing by motard riders tolerated on track sessions... so MotoTT doesn't stand out as being super-safe to me..
However, my point about track time stands and I dont believe it has any impact on safety.

If MotoTT were to run your suggested format we would end up with way too many people on the track at one time which could and probably would result in a higher crash rate due to people trying to pass others that really should be in a slower group.
Personally I'd rather get a "freer" track so I can go out there and learn some more and enjoy myself without the feeling of congestion and concern.
BTW every time I've attended a MotoTT track day down in Taupo I've had 5 or 6 sessions and each time there has been an ambulance in attendance.
Maybe it would be more beneficial for you to simply utilise the Pukekohe track days due to your location.

Hey.... I dont want to get in to a debate on safety. MotoTT are a safe outfit.... as safe as I have seen (ambulance event aside)....
On a circuit the size of Taupo it is possible to have safe numbers on track and make the day economically viable. Thats not guesswork, thats a fact based on trackdays run on the 6 x 20 minute x 3 group format in the UK. I just think the event they are offering could be improved ....4 sessions is not enough.
jrandom
20th April 2008, 05:21
On a circuit the size of Taupo it is possible to have safe numbers on track...
There's a big difference between 'safe numbers on track' and 'being able to ride as you wish with clear track ahead of you'.
If the groups out on track were any bigger, people would be spending half their on-track time riding around other bikes instead of getting in clear laps. While safety may be able to maintained with larger groups, rider enjoyment would go down markedly.
I second DMNTD's comments; I've done three MotoTT days this year, and at each of them I've been out for at least five sessions. My trip meter generally shows slightly over 160km for the day (which, on Betty, is barely do-able on one tank of gas at track riding pace), and by selecting the correct group, I find myself spending most of my time with nobody holding me up and nobody parked up my arse.
Maybe I'm not the riding god you are, Mort, but I know that by the end of one of those days, I'm well knackered and pretty much ready to park up and collapse.
In terms of safety, smaller group sizes aren't going to stop people giving themselves the learn and falling off of their own accord, but they are going to reduce the chance of multiple-bike incidents, which can get much nastier than just going for a slide off the track on one's arse. I think MotoTT have the right idea with the format they're running.

The noise restrictions that mean that Taupo has to close at 4:30pm are an arse.
I don't imagine Hampton Downs will be subject to anything similar. Summer evening trackdays, anyone?
:woohoo:
Mort
20th April 2008, 12:08
I agree with you 100% however I think you'll find that to be able to maintain safe numbers on the track at any one time and achieve 6x20min sessions that the pricing would simply go up.
How much are the trackdays in the UK on average? Also how long are some of these tracks? (genuine questions)
IMO 30ish out there at any one time is just right. Any more and it's an arse...
Average UK group size is around 30ish... (sometimes seems like more) At Donington Park for instance the National circuit (http://www.donington-park.co.uk/maps/National.pdf) is 3.1km and the full Grand Prix circuit (http://www.donington-park.co.uk/maps/GrandPrix.pdf) is just over 4km. Other circuits are about the same size... So Its comparable to Taupo (3.5km). I never felt any event was over crowded.
No UK track day firm uses 4 groups and they all offer 6 or even 7 sessions starting at 9am prompt with 1 hour for lunch...(not 4 as MotoTT are showing on their web page). I note also that Frosty uses 3 groups.
Running 3 groups of 30+ riders on a full circuit is not unsafe. This is purely a matter of good organisation. Having groups ready to roll when the previous group ends. Swift collection of crashed bikes and riders. Much can be done to reduce crashes (for instance repeated reminders to spend 3 laps warming up tyres). Its not rocket science.... and its not as if it isnt done elsewhere.....
why does MotoTT have to be different ? Where is the benefit of what they are offering ? I can only assume they feel it necessary to accomodate the antics of Supermotards..at the cost of every one else.

I can't wait for Hampton Downs... At Donington they run evening sessions after many day events.... Book for both and you get 9 or 10 sessions... I've done it a few times... Its a top day. The best events are two days together.... on Day 2 you really fly...

I would encourage you to spend a day with Sue, Peter, Chris, Kevin or Trevor (any one helping to run it) :)
You will very quickly realize how much effort IS being put into these days.
They do try to send groups out ASAP of the last one, they get the collection truck ready to go and waiting at the gate before the last session is finished etc.
Re warming tyres: Go to race days, you will even see that after many years of track riding even good riders will forget about warming their tyres and bin in the first few laps. Sure, telling people helps... But at every motoTT day I've been to they have stressed that point at each briefing... Keep in mind I live 10 mins from the track so I have been to a lot of they're days. Helping, riding and as a spectator.
Why does motoTT have to be different?! If they were the same as every one else then at some point you'd be complaining as to why no one was willing to try anything new
The benefits they are offering is that you can ride in a group of people that will be taking roughly the same lines as you. Motard lines are so much more different to road bikes that it can wreck your track time if you are constantly having people cut your lines. It's also a big safety thing.
Super Motarders pay the same amount as every one else... And they don't have JUST their own class. The quick racing guys also go with them.

I have been to almost every motott track day since august last year and have not seen it operate without a binner taxi. But any way.
The NEW four groups has seen less crashes and less serious crashes. You may be confused with the past Three group format
:)
Mort

Absolutely nothing personal about this - I know those guys work hard at this and they do a good job. My point is about the format of the day....
But getting back to my point.... four sessions in a full day with at least an hour and sometimes two hours around lunch sitting around waiting for the next session makes for a dull boring day. It doesnt temp me to drive 5 hours to attend where as more track time and less sitting on my arse would....
On the subject of motards.... if they do upset peoples lines, racing each other in packs, aggressively cutting up other riders (as has happened to me more than once at Taupo) I'd kick 'em off the event..... I wouldn't be allowed to ride like that on my road bike....what makes them so special that they can cause problems for other riders ???..... and the have whole day structured to accommodate them ?? Motards are fine with me.... I've had some good scraps with them in the UK but I absolutely don't see why they should be allowed to spoil other rider's sessions. One rule for all I say... and if they can't live with respecting other riders they should find their own event.

They're both very good, but Kevin and Sue are really lovely guys - and parents of the amazing Kiwifruit. Because of this and their remarkable organisational skills they get the Gold Bling from me.
Seriously though both Trackday companies are very good but MotoTT offer a bit more in the way of instruction/advice from the likes of Shaun Harris and Co.
Remember, insurance companies are starting to look very closely at the whole trackday scene - some even refusing to insure riders at trackdays where there is no tuition/rider supervision. That's an area where MotoTT has the upper hand :)

Hi Jade, I run a lodge here in the Naki so have taken the liberty of sorting this for you.
Ive been in touch with the "Rainbow Lodge" in Taupo & they have either a 9 bed dorm for $22 per night, a 4 bed dorm (with ensuite) for $25 per night or a single room (no ensuite) for $45 per night. They have secure parking for bikes & it's the closest hostel to the track being just 5/10 mins away (by car or bike).

Rich and Wendy on the 04/05 ZX10R, they're right into it eh
I was feeling a bit sick on thursday so wasn't sure if I was going to go or not. But I woke up at 5am on friday feeling about as good as you can at 5am, so off I went.
There was fog most of the way from auckland to matamata, some of it so thick you could only see 20m in front of you. But from matamata to Taupo it was mostly clear.
The trackday was great, the weather was perfect. I felt like I'd remembered how to ride from the last one, so was right into it again. Making sure I was hanging off heaps so as not to roll off the edge of the crappy GT501's again.
I was impressed by the guy on the bandit 250 in the final session. He had at least as good corner speed as me, I probably couldn't have passed him in the corners, but was able to on the straight thanks to my 400's power advantage (not often that happens!).
The ride back to auckland on friday night wasn't too bad. Not quite as foggy as it was on the way down, although there was a fair bit from Taupiri to Auckland.
I got some videos, but it's much of the same so I don't plan to post them up.
Thanks MotoTT!

My "weekend" started on Thursday at 5am when I left for New Plymouth to see Robert Taylor. Had a very productive time there getting my forks revalved and setup. Also tried on some Alpinestars 1 piece suits as my leathers are looking a bit used these days. Had a nice drive to Taupo in the afternoon stopping for the best whitebait fritters IMO at Mokau.
Met up with Gah at Chantillys and a few of the usuals for breakfast at Burburys (now "Friends"). From about there, things started going wrong.
Got to the track to find that I'd left my tyre warmers at home. Wouldn't have been so bad but this was the first time I was using Conti RaceAttack Comp mediums therefore unscrubbed, on a cold track with new brake pads to bed in as well - so I had lots to think about, as well as not having been on a bike in 6 weeks. Needn't have worried though cos come the start of the first session my bike wouldn't start. Key on, the FI light came on and the immobiliser light kept flashing. Shaun to the rescue - noticed the fuel pump wasn't going and found an error code 47 which after a few calls to Suzuki dealers meant an ignition wiring problem. Pulling the bike apart again - getting to be a standing joke at MotoTT trackdays - we found a broken wire, fixed it and put the bike back together.
Sue let me out in the next Group 4 session as going out in Group 1 on cold unscrubbed tyres to bed in brakes in the third session of the day would have been a bad idea. After about 3 laps the bike felt fantastic, so much grip and confidence.
Next was lunch and then I went out in Group 1. Followed Sam Love for a while thinking I might learn a thing or 2 once he sped up, then Gah passed us both and I followed him. Wasn't long before we encountered traffic and I managed to get past him and a few others. An R1 passed us on the back straight, but then braked very early so I continued on my line outside him and passed on the outside on the left hander. The bike was feeling very good and I could place it exactly where I wanted without having to button off and there was enough grip to get on the power earlier than I had been recently without running out of road coming out. Brakes were real good too at turns 7 and the end of the old pit straight especially, but the rear would lift at the end of the back straight. I think the difference at turn 7 was the exceptionally good Conti RaceAttack front. The R1 passed again on the back straight, and this reminded me of the fun we had at PMCC Rd 3 when we were racing R1's. He was better on the brakes this time, but coming onto the front straight I got on the power earlier got past him for an instant before his power advantage got him ahead, but not far enough so I had the inside line into Turn 1. Great fun I thought!! :nono:
At this time I think my head went into race mode rather than trackday mode. I came up on two motards ant the end of the back straight, got past the first then found that the other was on my line and going a lot slower than I though, so I was hard on the brakes rear in the air again, avoided him but ended up using the run off. I rejoined behind a group where Gah was and went about following him. Next lap I followed Gah past a few others, which on reflection, may have been a bit close for a trackday.
Coming onto the back straight I follow Gah past a couple of Motards then get past him on the outside towards the end of the straight. Brake late to give him room on the inside, but the rear comes up again and next thing I know, I'm sliding down the road, for quite a while. I think I've stopped and attempt getting up only to realise that I hadn't and now I'm tumbling, which is less good. Come to a stop without hitting anything I think, Recollect my thoughts - am I hurt? Get up slowly and stay up. Hand up to signal I'm OK. Where's my bike????? :crybaby: Must be a mess. Stuck in the tyres miles away!! Pick the bike up, but a tyre's on top of it stopping me because it's on its left side and in gear I can't move it out. One hand lifting and one pushing the tyre out on the way worked with the help of the adrenaline rush, but then I overbalance and drop it on it's right side!! Bike is not too bad all considered and I ride it back to the pits.
Very lucky to escape with minimal injury. I have a very sore left little toe, which I have no idea how I got as the boot's undamaged and is very hard in that area. Small gravel rash on the left knee where I wore thru the leather and a few minor bruises and thats about it. Bikes bent the left front disc, gashed rear tyre, broken front subframe and the rest is cosmetic.
Probably the worst part is that back in the pits I'm confronted by a rather agitated R1 rider who was upset but the way I passed him on the inside, not once but twice (in his words). He complained to Sue about it too so she had to come a talk to me about it. Sorry Sue! She said I didn't have to, but I went up to him later and apologised and he accepted this well - and we're mates again!! ( yes, I knew him from previous trackdays )
So not the best day for me, but funnily enough I'm happy because the bikes now setup well. I've learnt that I need to work on where my heads at - especially when the bikes going well!! Cheers to all the guys for your help on the day!!!

I'd like to thank Leong (tyres), Texmo (bike), and Kiwifruit (trackday spot) for an awesome day out.
First full day at the track in over 6 months, and shit it was fun.
Thanks heaps to those guys
Leong, I was wondering where you'd gone later in the day. Glad to hear you're not too hurt and not too much damage to the bike.

I think I like the days when there's less to write about better tho.... Thanks for the offer to help but it's really not too bad. Gav's offered to help tomorrow night but after pulling the bike apart this weekend, I don't think even that's necessary. Got a text from Shaun too offering anything I need to get the bike going for next week. Thanks all you guys !! Oh and Ninjaboy for the offer of parts!! See ya next weekend though if it's raining I'll be there as a spectator!!

Yeah, had another "busy" day, then thought I'd make it home in time to watch my son at interclub badminton so headed home early..... Hopefully the next day won't be so busy fixing the bike or repairing crash damage!!

Yip but he doesnt earn enough to support the racing as well (there is a reason for that)
i got a talent for going fast on fairings

re - mirrors
i too hate seeing mirrors being used out on track; i've lost track of the number of times i've seen slower riders using 'em out there & mucking up their lines, braking & riding dangerously as a result...
