NC30 headlight issues again.

For a while I've had irratic headlights. High beams wouldn't go, they'd start working again only the low beams would stop high beams were on when flicked onto low, then in the middle of the night they decide to turn off completely.

I think I've narrowed down the problem to this thing (attached photo).

I noticed on one of the terminals when I unplugged it that there was this green crust stuff. I've unplugged this thing before (so I've suspected this was the problem) and it was clean when I put the bike back together. I've cleaned it off and now the high beams are working when you want them.

What is it? Can I fix it, bodge something up or will I have to call the wreckers?

Its a relay. Kind of looks like its getting to hot to me. Looks melted in places. Problem may be more severe than just replacing the relay.

The stuff around the plug is just gunk. Looks like it's melted due to the camera.

Sorry hard to tell by the photo.
We use a spray on contact cleaner at work to clean electrical connectors. You can also buy a spray to coat the connectors to help stop them from oxidising etc.

I used CRC. That should work shouldn't it?

can only try. The stuff we use is specificaly designed for cleaning contacts. Try a tiny bit of grease to stop the oxidising build up on the contacts again. Good luck with that

And then smear the contacts with vaseline once it's dried and you won't get that problem any more.

I just used the multi-purpose CRC.

Still didn't fix the low beams though. Think I have to get another one

Your VFR may not have a relay for the low beams. Try cleaning the internals of the left switchblock, and its black & brown plugs to the left of the front cylinder head

Did that a while ago. Didn't change anything. It's the relay when it gets fiddled around with that the headlights change symptoms or start working.

The CRC is all I could nick off my Dad. Don't have the money for anything flash that does the job properly. It says on the can it's good for electrics so why not use it?

I use fleet wash on the fairings.
