View Full Version : DR650 front wheel

I've discovered a crack in my front rim at the joint weld. It is in the radial wall i.e. not the bead seat. Most likely been like that for the whole of this year so not to worried about it but I'm after some info.
Anybody know if welding is worth it or should I source a replacement wheel/ new rim?
What is the cost of lacing on a new rim?
Anybody know of a second hand 96+ DR650 front wheel (don't care if it doesn't have a disk) around somewhere?
Would a DR350 wheel accept the DR650 disk (DR350 18' rear's work with the DR650 apparently) and does it have the correct bearing sizes?
Any advice/assistance appreciated.

I have a spare rim and that is rim only.
You could get it re-laced to your hub. (or we could give it ago)
Or pick up one from a wrecker almost any 21" Jap rim will do as long as it has the same number of holes.
As I think they all run the same angle for the spokes.

I'll annoy some wreckers and see what I can turn up. Failing that I'll get back in touch. I don't have a problem lacing up a wheel but getting it true and the correct spoke tension might be a bit of an issue. Found a guy who might be able to help though.

Must be a common problem. Mate of mine had a crack in the rear rim of his DR650. Discovered it a couple of days before a 2 week south island trip. He managed to get it welded up, which is apparently pretty tricky. Hasn't had a problem since, (or should I say yet), and that was a few thousand miles ago.

Wire Wheel Services is the guy I've found who are you referring to?
Pics attached. On the last pic I scratch an arc perpendicular to the crack so the line is not a crack. The crack is only radial at the moment. Really clean line on the inside which suggests (well to me anyway) that the original weld didn't penetrate that well. I don't know for certain but this could be my crash catching up with me again. I don't remember any other big impacts that might have done this.

Good luck with sorting this Ryan, if you're really stuck I have a half tube of "Knead-it" I can bring with me to Wellington?
Seriously tho, be worth fixing ASAP as cracks seem to grow at an exponential rate. :crybaby:

Had a laugh at the sign on the wall that goes with this.
Had a blurb about costs then the lower half of the sign was
Wait for work +10%
Wait and chat +20%
Wait, chat and help +30%
At least somebody has a sense of humor:D
