On a mechanical issue. Im wanting to hear from TLR thou owners past & present or anyone in the know about this particular issue.

Reason I ask is im looking to buy one. I'm already sold on the bike itself, they sound great, look great, stop & turn great & of course GO great, so not looking for anymore sales brochures just wanting to hear from those who have or still do own them & what flaws they have experienced or heard of. The one im looking at has been dropped, cosmetic damage, no big drama to fix. New fairing & exhaust. The major concern at this stage is the back lash gear noise. One mechanic says its no drama, just makes a noise like a tappet in a car (tick tick tick) & another saying its up to about $2,000 to remedy & is advisable to get it done as it can cause a lot more damage. The bike also has had some gears replaced in the box, apparently due to a past owner being a lil wheelie happy. Motor was stripped and checked out fine. Bike has done a lil over 50k.

So im now left with two differing opinions, one of which is suggesting it will cost $2,000 to remedy & if not cost twice that if more damage is done.

Any experience with this?

What's your view?

Thank you kindly

I don't know about TLs but suspect the thing you are talking about is the scissor gears. The following are from a SV site but same engine so...

What sort of mileage did it have?

Hey dude,

I owned one for a short period, and i loved it aye.. But one thing i learnt is the TL in TL1000R stood for Ticks Loudly! And its just part in parcel in owning one, Just like the hideous sound of a dry clucth on a Ducati.. Give 98TLS a buzz for more info as he know TL's like the back of his hand. or have a look at http://www.tlzone.net/forums/ for all the info you should need

My TLR was my first vtwin and love it, done about 40k at the moment no real engine noise other than the cam shims are due to be done, Mods, have put a resistor to the gearbox wiring, for full power in first gear, smaller engine sprocket, larger rear, air box mod . All the workshop manuals and mods you can download from the net. You will just love setting off car alarms. Here's mine http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s246/MazTLR/bike1.jpg

I had a TLR, loved it. I brought it with about 35,000k's on it, and put on another 35,000 odd. Mine had the ticking noise as well, annoying but never caused any problems. Great bike, loved it to bits - it got me hooked on twins. I love the sound they make just rumbling along, and it just gets better when you start giving them the berries.

You should try at TLR then - same sort of midrange, but with more rush up top.
