Is there such a thing as a worn carby or does it simply mean it needs a good cleaning?

Yes
Depending on the carb type all sorts of things wear, anything that moves, slides rubs against something else.Some parts that wear have a bigger effect on how the engine runs than others.
But try cleaning it first

Thanks. Will try and give it a clean first. Assuming it's worn, what's the best way to tell?

Often needles wear out and it'll run quite rich. Poor mileage, blacken everything up with carbon. Slides can wear out too and cause weird air leaks and other odd behaviour.

What sort of carbs are they? CV or slide? It's a two-stroke Aprilia RS250, right?

Slides get a bit rattley and ususally make the bottom end carburetion a bit lean and erratic, idle will be erratic, needle and emulsion tube 1/4 throttle and up runs a bit rich.
Hard to say without looking at them on the bike and off. You will probably need a magnifying glass to see emulsion tube wear. The hole will be oval instead of round.

Unless im wrong [2 stroker carbs may be different to 4's]the emulsion tubes wont be worn more likly the seats the needles run in witch the emulsion tubes hold in.:done:

Yes the tubes can wear but 4 stroke CVs tend to wear quicker as they are vibrating up & down as opposed to direct pull carbs.

But have seen worn 2 stroke carbs on high mileage. But RS250 unlikely to be that high? Either way check with super good light & a magnifying glass if poss. Only takes a small amount of ovality (if that is indeed a word).

But begs the question what is the symptom you are trying to address?

PS: Never poke wire through jets. Remove & blow through pilot jets (the small ones up the tube).

well from whot i unnerstand from my old vfr and current cb900 [lets take the cb example]the cb was running ritch as hell when i got and was told the carbs needed work.
talked to a mecanic and he said it would be needles and seats so i put some good ones of these in and it's purring now.
by the needles and seats i mean the needle [obviesly]and the little thing that pushes into the carb before you screw the emulsion tube in.
Yes the emulsion can wear but all i was saying was it's more likly to be the little bit in front that the needle rattles round in.

Think I've broken the code;

a cab mey run ritch if the floot neadill is leeking butt that is caus the carp is ovaflowig. If the emulsion toob is worn ovel it will sukk larg drpplets of gas up the siedes of the tube too neadle hole.
