Im picking up my new bike on Fri from Taupo and riding it back down to Wellytown. I thought that I would be all organised and get the insurance sorted out ASAP. Unfotunately, thanks to all the bastard arsewipes out there that insist on stealing peoples bikes I am having more than a hard time trying to insure my new bike. I have no garage but am planning on disc locking and chaining the bike, however most insurance companies wont even touch me cause it wont be locked up in a garage and too many bikes have been stolen lately! So now I am at a loss as to what to do. I really want to have insurance but it would seem that I cant and im really fucked off! I know it isnt the insurance companies fault but man I just wanna throttle someone!

Ranteth endeth.

Have you tried John Baker or kiwibike insurance ?

Some good reports in here about them both.

Surely you can lock it, place a bike cover over it and keep it out of sight from the road ?

Havent tried John Baker but good idea!

I explained to the people that it'd be well of the road, covered, disc locked and chained and they still wouldnt insure me. BUT they would insure me for no extra charge for track days and to let my under 25yr old partner ride it as well. I would laugh if it werent so painful! :(
I even told them that is already a 400cc plus a mint A100 that is parked there uncovered and unlocked every bloody night and it hasnt walked but there is no convincing them,. They must be losing far too much money from stolen bikes!!

Yep, same story with them too.... I understand why, I just wish I could take as gun and shoot the people responsible for stealing. Maybe I will buy a really viscious guard dog and chain him to the bike as well......

Well you're very understanding then aren't you cause I'm stumped.

How many people don't have their bike locked away in a garage and have managed to get insurance ?

Ive had a bike living in my lounge for the last few months but I live up a flight of stairs and the RG will not fit round the corners of the staircase to my flat. I know this cause we tried to get my bucket racer up them..... I so would keep them all in my flat if I could!!!

When asked about the garage thing, I told them it is outside and chained using a 'motorcycle chain' (they asked if it was a motorcycle lock chain) and secured to a solid steel ground anchor into solid concrete and also has a security camera pointing at it. Oh and having a cover also brings it down I believe too.

It may as well be a garage in their eyes - if that makes sense?

I am also planning on fitting a remote disabling thingy to it - LINK (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=72008)

If you want help setting up something similar, im only too happy.

Hehe, have fun with state. Took me 6 MONTHS before I got payed out. That was with doing everything right my end. I had a perfect driving history then, no tickets etc and 60% no claims bonus - that was my first and last claim with them!

I've heard of people putting their bike in their lounge in this situation.. Is this an option for you?

I am with Kiwibiker and have found them to be excellent.

AA wouldn't insure me at all because I wasn't on a full licence at the time (the fact that we've had our cars, house and contents etc. with them for yonks didn't make any difference). Ended up doing the bikes through Dave Golightly (Vero) in Chch. Will put husbands bike with him as well cos we've been so happy with them. Glad to hear you seem to have it sorted now though.

And i don't think anybody would steal meekeys rg in the nick its in.

nice running bike but it dont look too purdy at the moment lol.

Disc lock and chain to a big fuckoff ground anchor will be fine, nobody will touch it.

But at least get insurance to cover in a crash.

We are all so fucked when compulsary insurance comes in, they qare going to rip us all new arseholes.

Try StarInsurance. Only drawback is that you might end up paying a higher excess for it.

From helping my mate out dropping his bike off to stars wrecks garage and talking to the guy from there they seemed very helpful and good to deal with, very quick payout too.

I do not have others to compare against, but on this alone i would be going with star if i were to get insurance.

No insurance company will touch me with a pole though.

I have insured all my other bikes through Star as they are excellent and there customer service is second to none. They offer no extra charge for track day insurance. They were the first company I called and they were the first to deny me.... Ah well, cant blame them in a way! :(

Have you considered getting a shed? With a locking door, it just a small garage!!

I know thats an expensive one, but Placemakers and the like do cheaper kitset ones.
