50 Years after being used for nuclear testing this reef has begun recovering astonishingly well.

Yeah and the vets who had to witness it still haven't got any compensation.....we'll ensure we don't skimp out on the beneficiaries though

It shows how nature can live through/past an apocalyptic event such as nuclear weapons while the humans on the land and sea took far longer before being able to re-inhabit the islands.

Nice but only half the story, i read an article about this last week
The reef might be recovering, but the also tested the coconuts on the island which pretty much read off the limit on the gicter counter
i will find the article i was reading

"Apart from occasional forays of illegal shark, tuna and Napoleon Wrasse fishing, the reef is almost completely undisturbed to this day," says Maria Beger of the University of Queensland in Australia. "There are very few local inhabitants and the divers who visit dive on shipwrecks, like the USS Saratoga, and not on the reef."
Beger took a Geiger counter with her on dives and says that the background levels were similar to that at any Australian city. The same could not be said of coconuts growing on the islands.
"When I put the Geiger counter near a coconut, which accumulates radioactive material from the soil, it went berserk," says Beger.

Yes thats true, i'm more interested in the aquatic life than the human life on the little island which is why I was reading the "practical fishkeeping (http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/home.php)" website and not the "I love humans website".
How dare they test nuclear weapons ON an undisturbed coral reef? Should have tested them in Washington.

Well, I never really thought this day would come, but...I'm glad you posted that article Dan.
I happen to care very much for what is happening to the coral reef, having been born in New Caledonia and spent my childhood there. I left at 19, in disgust mostly for the poor management exercising on "my" island by the french gubermonkeys.
Thanks for posting this Dan.
