if a 250cc 2 stroke is about 20 years old and done 60000 km is it likely to break down often?

Yes. Very often. That why we luvs them
Why are you worried about it breaking down ? If you are a suitable person to be entrusted with the care of an aged two smoker , that will be the least of your concerns. If you were entrusted with the care of your aged great grandmother would you query whether she might be anorgasmic ?

Perhaps, but it'll also be piss-easy to repair compared to a straight four 4 stroke. , and a hell of a lot cheaper. (ok that could depend on the bike)

Very common misconception.

I think Nike said it best:
"Just do it"
You will curse and swear like a motherfugger - you will begin to smell and stop talking to people (talking to yourself on the other hand....).
You will become some kind of motorbike hermit, you may even start growing hair in strange places.
But it will feel so good.

Not all 2 strokes where created equal....the suzuki tt's and yamaha RD's for example where quite reliable with just a bit of love......
So maybe tell us more about the particular bike you are thinking off.....

Very probably, and if it's been sitting around for a while you might need to do a rebuild anyway.

Long as you can still get main engine bits you'll be sweet as. Flatmate runs 2 stroke suzuki cars as his dailys, You can't buy ANYTHING for them anymore, and he does ok.
I just picked up an rg for a princely sum and I wanna do a freshen up. wheres the best place to get oversize pistons and gasket sets etc for them? the guy i got it of did a piston/barrel change on one side with secondhand bits and I wanna get it top notch before it flies to bits and does huge damage...

Here's a handy tip for you from a mate of mine who used to own a 2-stroke. Screw in the plugs finger-tight; it makes it easier to take them out and clean them when they (inevitably) get fouled.
(Aw, come on folks, I shouldn't have to say this, but perhaps I'd better: This is a terrible idea.)

If you run decent oil at the correct levels then you wont get fouling issues. also if you ride them with enough attention to let them get a decent combustion heat going also. I used to have old two stroke dirtbikes when I was younger and we used to run the most rancid cheap $4 a litre oil in them. they used to gush it out the back unburnt and shit but we never fouled plugs. Now I run decent stuff and it's sweet as. aforementioned flatmate never fouls plugs even round town in his cars.

I used two different grades in the T500. Champion L78's for the open road and the hotter L82Y's for around town.
No problems! At only 20 years old, it's likely to be liquid cooled?

i want a t500 :(
20 years now isn't really seeming that old. I instantly thought 'omg 1970s' but a 1988 should be a cinche for parts.

Ahh the sight, sound and smell of a two-stroker smoker makes mine heart go pitter-pat
Reminds me, there are two more of them to be rebuilt! :o :pinch:
Piccies please when you can, for this thread is worthless without pics! :msn-wink:

Last T500 was in `1975 (called the GT500 then).
Only liquid cooled two stroke of that era was the GT750. (actually, the only liquid cooled bike of the era, full stop).

There was the Zundapp 50....but only the head....or the barrel was water cooled.Pretty sure it was the head.Gorgeous orange and chrome....but we never said it out loud. When riding my M20 I had to assume a disdainful air....I would ignore the silly Zundapp and imply I wasn't racing my big 500cc single against a puny 50cc two stroke....all the while wringing as much of the 13hp as I could out of it.You can't really valve bounce a sidevalve, but it's fun trying.
