Just a warning to Auckland Bikers... yesterday (22/04/2008) at around midday, in full public view on a busy road in the central city, and even on security camera some scum bag attempted to steal my GSXR1100. The person used some tool to smash the ignition lock, but was unsuccessful in either unlocking the steering lock or in starting the bike. The footage is yet to be obtained from the security system, but the person is believed to be a male around 6ft, thin, and was wearing a helmet and a back pack. This person is extremely brazen, even when spotted by staff acted like they belonged there or owned the bike. I'd love to frikkin :bash: this lowlife! My steering lock now cannot be unlocked!

Cheers guys. Any ideas about where to look for a replacement ignition system would be appreciated. Would prefer to have matching ignition, tank filler and seat lock. Any offers of help to remove and replace the ignition would be appreciated too. I have no idea how it's going to be removed due to the position it's locked in. This might need to go to the bike shop and be an insurance job me thinks.
Unfortunately I've already seen the footage and it's not all that clear due to the zoom out that was set at the time.
Couldn't agree more. I felt that angry last night I wanted the guy dead. I mean it's not just a scumbag thing to do, but how braindead is this guy to think he would get the steering unlocked and successfully started after mashing the lock. Deeeeeeerrrrrr! Probably a frikin P Junkie or something!

The person that saw him said that the helmet was multicoloured, but to me it looked either white or light grey in the footage. Didn't appear to be multicoloured. I'll check with the person and get back to you. Why do you ask?

Will do. Mate, this guy's gotta be thicker than a foot thick steak sandwich to think he could break the lock and get it started, so don't count on the fact that he wouldn't have tried your bike had it bean there at the time. I figured your bike can't have been there and you'd ducked out because I'm sure I would have heard about it otherwise. Scott saw him and the guy didn't even bat an eyelid apparently.

surely with all these thefts... maybe police 10-7 might be interested??? maybe? you know how they do 'hot spots' for house robberies etc...
Have seen people post up pics of people stealing their bikes... surely there is enough of us on here who have had bikes stolen or attempted thefts to justify a few minutes on the programme.
Edit: someone may recognise the theif... dob them in... etc... it seems to work for dairy robberies/petrol station ones too... so why not us?

Hi Dan,
This is a bit alarming, I'm a Harley owner myself. Actually we've only had three motorcycles reported stolen on the North Shore between the 1st of February 2008 and today. The number could be a bit higher as reporting of stolen but unregistered bikes (eg. trail bikes and quads etc) is "patchy". About 90% of registered bikes are reported to us if they are stolen however.
This figure covers the North Shore city boundaries.
Compared to cars, a lot less stolen bikes are ever found as they get stripped more easily and often have the I/D swapped and they are re-sold or used by the thief. Because of this we are anticipating a rise in motorcycle thefts to match the sales increases due to the cost of fuel.
Kind regards

Les...As a Harley Davidson owner I'm sure you'll welcome this caller's request, altho I'm not
sure he has the figures correct for number of motor cycles being stolen on the North Shore..!
Could you arrange for a staff member to respond to the caller direct about the status of thefts
on the North Shore...there's certainly an option open for profiling such thefts on Police 10-7 too.
Another option is via Crime Scene in NZ Herald.
Gabrielle - for your reference and possible interest in profiling recent thefts of motor cycles.

Them that can really 'do the damage' are generally in prison because of it, sir. I frown upon the mild hint of admiration for violent criminals in your statement.
It's not a matter of 'can'. Virtually anyone is capable of performing a very large range of antisocial acts. Thank goodness it is just talk; I would have nothing to do with this forum if it were populated by the sort of individuals who would actually ignore the rules of civilisation in such a manner.

You (understandibly) misread what I wrote.
There are those that walk among us wearing black belts, or have other experience and understanding of how to defuse a dangerous situation or, as that last resort, step up and efficiently neutralise the threat. My point is they're not the vocal ones, they have no need to be as they're not issuing the threats, rather resting secure in their own abilities.
I was merely attempting highlight the irony of those that resort to violence, threats and other standover tactics, those that are vocal and willing in their offers of violence are going to be the ones that come off very much worse for wear when they are outgunned by a far superior, yet modest opponent as is often the way.
I totally agree with Asimov, and by way of example share a favourite memory from a few years ago.
Sitting in the back of a car, a bit of a lad, we'd been blasting about town late at night as one is prone to do when young dumb ... etc. We'd stopped for food, and across the road there were two guys facing off. One had the boxing stance, physically threatening, stocky, and I'd say in bloody good shape from what I could see. The other guy was average/light build, standing, back to a corrigated iron wall try to talk the boxer down.
"You don't want to do that, can't we just walk away... etc etc etc".
A couple of punches were thrown, and I expected the smaller guy to cower or run and it'd be all on but no... he took a couple of body blows and continued to talk as reasonably as he could, a little more urgent of course - but FAR from panicked. Still saying he didn't want to do this it's not too late etc. A few more punches landed, the boxer moved in - was dazed by a spinning back-kick, grabbed collar and belt, head smacked into the wall and dropped.
Dealt with... whereupon the smaller guy proceeded to get help for his assailant.
THOSE are the people I refer to. Totally in keeping with what you say (if I read it right). Humility, control, perspective, and ability.
What's not to admire? They do walk among us, and I'm proud to call a couple of them friends

Hooray! Just like in the movies.
Good thing the big guy didn't have a knife, and was a (probably drunken) idiot more intent on mouthing off than on getting the job of hurting the little guy over and done with.
What's not to admire?
If I were the little guy, I'd be taking a close look at the reasons why I ended up in that situation in the first place.

So what is the go with the thefts? Are these bastards trying to start the bike/steering lock by ramming a screwdriver into the ignition like they do cars?
It seems to me that if they can at least get the steering lock undone, then they can walk the bike into a waiting van and away.
Would a chain around the wheels deter the theives? (at least they cant walk away with the bike) there would then need to be a crew to pick up the bike and put it into a van. Will this preventive measure work? if so we all need to start chaining our bikes.

I had to take my ignition barrel out on my gsxr 750 with the steering lock on when I lost the key. You need to drop the forks out and remove the whole top clamp. You can take the whole top clamp with the ignition in it to a locksmith and they might be able to repair it.

Its all very well for PC people like Isaac Asimov to condemn violence but there are occasions where violent reactions are the only type of reaction that some individuals will respond to, respect or even understand.
I am not ashamed to having reluctantly dished out some very effective "incompetence" at times where all else had failed.
Unfortunately I am not very good at it any more or would display a bit more "incompetence" toward some of these bloody bike thieves if I could catch them!

That seemed to be the intent. My thought is that had I used my disc alarm lock it may well have deterred them, and saved me the $180 its cost me for a replacement. That doesn't include time/labour. I'll definitely be using it every time at home and while out now.
From the technical perspective I don't know how feasible it is to do this. i.e. get the bike started even if the steering isn't locked. Perhaps someone with knowledge of how successful it is can tell us.
But the way I figured it, is that my steering was locked... what's the chances of the unit actually being able to start the bike after it's been that munted to get it to the unlocked position. Someone seemed to indicate that it's the way that you steal a bike, so perhaps it's more feasible than I think.
