When i get up to high revs, around 12,000 and above i get alot of black smoke from my exhaust. It doesnt seem to happen at low revs, or its not noticable.

Anybody got any ideas? I thought it might be too rich, so maybe its not getting enough air.

Cheers
Andrew

yeah it sounds to rich have you replaced or cleaned out your air filter? failing that you can drop the needles 1 position at a time and see if that cleans it up

If it it too rich at full throttle then either the air cleaner is clogged up (unlikely) or the main jets are too large. The needles / needle jets and slide cut away usually handle the transitional area from off idle to full noise....

The other thing it could be is accumulated crud bruning in the pipe...

If it is just black smoke while on the stand and being reved then yes it could be the needles etc.

If you can stand the fines....

Hold it flat out in top until you get going as fast as it can... Roll the throttle closed a little. If it feels like the engine frees up or it speeds up a tad. It's too rich..

white smoke = lean
black smoke = rich
blue smoke = oil
green smoke = acid trip
yeah if it spits out a big cloud of soot when your revving it outside the garage its probably rich.
of course with the age of the bike its probably burning a bit of oil also. 15 yr old gsxr 250 , must have done a few k's

i wouldn't mind a bit of guidance on the smoke issue either... when i bought my bike a month or two ago, it had basically been sitting for a year in a garage, but the asian guy i bought it off managed to communicate to me that the 2-stroke mix needed resetting? i have no idea why it would need restting if it had been sitting for a year but waeva. It is a bit smoky on startup (stockas grey smoke) then seems to clear up as i ride it around a bit.
However, when i open up the throttle in first, i blanket the guy behind me in a massive ass cloud of smoke..(grey as well)..
My question is, what is wrong with my bike, and does the 2-stroke mix need to be reset?
I was under the impression that there is a needle you adjust, but you should never need to unless you are running in a new enjine etc.

On the safe side take it in for a tune up. Fuck running it to lean.

on the 2 stroke issue, what is you gas consumption like? You may find its using more gas than usuall. run a tank of 98 (or higher if you can get it) with some high grade oil (that motul expensive stuff is great) - if the problem still there get the bike serviced. Could be anything from a fouled plugs to a over run oil pump. 2 strokes keep running till something serious fails - then they fuck hte whole motor.

Get some iriduim plugs in it. Also run some avgas for a tank - works a charm on getting everything bangin right and clean
