Got me a FXR150, NOW WHAT? lol

Hi peoples, just bought me a 2nd hand FXR150 today. Its done 15,000kms, never been dropped and looks (near) mint. Just wondering if theres any advice people can give to me to maintain it. Its my first bike, and i dont know much. i.e what oil i should put in, weather it needs a oil change, if it needs a service or checkup, and if so, how much and wheres a good place (im on the North Shore). Also good places to buy tyres if i ever need them or how to mount a top box or an alarm (and where from). Just anythign relevant, POST IT! :rolleyes:

Should say that the bike had been sitting locked up for a month in carpark, just pumped up the tyres today. Any way i can find out if the oil is still decent or whatever? Or should i change regardless Cheers

Gee that is all pretty open ended,

First off do you when the bike was last serviced? If not, and I was you, I would be changinng the oil and filter at a minimum, it is pretty staight foward to do yourself. As for bike shops on the North Shore, Cycletreads on Barrys Point Road will be your best bet, I have never used them as I am on the other side of the bridge but all reports are that they are good to deal with and prices are reasonable. Cycletreads will be able to provide you with all your consumables like oil, filters, tyres, etc.

One other thing, dont be affraid to ask stupid questions (maybe be a little more specific than the one that opened this thread), KB alot of the time will give you a number of stupid anwsers but there may just be a few worth listening to.

start saving up for a full service, its always a good idea to do it on bikes you dont know much about

renegade is right. take it to the shop and tell them you just bought and can they give the fine tooth comb treatment. Then you should forget it and ride !!

having owned and maintained one for the best part of 4 years here's my 2cents.

FXR's are great bikes to learn on, both riding and basic maintenance.

Oil:
User manual has very clear instructions on how to do it yourself - filter is just a paper push in, pull out jobbie - dead simple ($12 from suzuki dealer).

FXR's work pretty hard for a living (8.5k rpm at 100kph), so good oil and regular changes are a good bet to keep the engine sweet.
Buy 4L of synthetic (Motul or similar), and do a change every 3000-4000km - this may sound expensive, but you only use 1.1L per full change, so 4L lasts a long time!

No matter how much of a noo-b you are, give it a go.

Whats a fair price for a full service? Might try changing the oil and filter myself because of its ease (apparently :whistle:)

Good choice of bike. we had sooo much fun and value out of ours, they are just so much fun to own.

The one thing I wanted to do with our FXR but never did get around to, was to fit a brighter headlight bulb. The FXR is a Singapore-built bike, never made in Japan or anywhere else. I don't think they ever ride them out of the city and so they have this pissy weak headlight. We seldom rode at night anywhere other than the motorway so it wasn't really an issue. That is the one and only moan I have about an otherwise perfect learner bike.

If you don't know when the last oil change was, I'd do an oil+filter now.
