View Full Version : New hotmix on Rimutaka Hill - thank you Lord!!
I guess the thanks are really due to Higgins or whoever did the hard yards. You've done a better job than the effort to reseal Manfield track!
A large part of the top half of the Wgtn side is now sweeeet, smooooth flowing, uncorrugated bliss. I don't think they are finished yet - keep going Lads, reseal the entire hill.
I did a late arvo run up at about 4pm today and just had to go back...and back again...until the sun dipped out of sight.
If only we could kick the trucks off to preserve it.
ZX10R down.
On another note a silver 05 model ZX10R was being loaded onto a tow truck looking the worse for head butting the rock face. I passed the Ambulance heading off with the Rider in it as I reached the start of the hill. Then came across Mr Plod further up - a friendly chap too, helping the Towie load the bike. I asked how the Rider was and he said he was a bit knocked about but nothing serious. Apparently he had sold the bike and popped out for one last blat. Hope he banked the cheque beforehand.
Oops. I meant to post this in General Bike Ravings. If a Mod wants to, feel free to relocate.

That new seal is marvellous! That downhill section was the worst part of the whole hill. Even though a bike probably wasn't going to do anything silly under brakes on that old pitted, corrugated shit, it certainly didn't feel that way.

They're one of the things that sets Wellington bikers apart from the rest.

Early morning burn over the takas (for the ANZACs), bliss, a bit chilly, the new seal is nice, but I'd kinda got used to the corrugation on the corners and learned to just get on the gas through them and realised just how much I'd been changing my lines to avoid holes, lumps etc which are no longer there, funny!!
A fair few riders were up there today checking it out. If they reseal the entire hill like that, I might buy a tent and camp up there permanently. It's that much fun.
Some riders had doubts about the level of grip with the seal being so new. I pushed it much harder today and the grip is fine.
There were a couple of left handers though where they have painted the left edge solid white line a bit too far out onto the road. It encroaches onto your line as you clip the apex. Might catch some out on a damp surface.

My first run out on my newly repaired ride this afternoon and I get the pleasent surprise of that beautifully done piece of road. Well done those guys! FYI got my nerve back pretty quick and had to tear up a bit of that awesome twisty.
Did point out a few things I'm not happy with on the repair job though but will get in sorted. On the plus side the pirellis still grip like a catholic school boy.

Ohyez, it’s a nice piece of work. Those old mid-corner whups seemed to be some weird frequency/amplitude combination, it was the only place locally that the Buell routinely danced all over the bloody place. The new surface is so good I need to invent some new causes for concern, least I get too complacent.

I tried it out today as well. Made sure I cristened it with some peg grinding. Very very nice indeed.
Deano left a nice black line across it too!

That surface is the shizzle. It's enough to get you out of bed early to beat the traffic.

I'll be down in a month's time to 'ave a go.
Wonder if it'll hold up that long?

Had two looks at the new surface this weekend (by people-mover) and it looks friggin mint. Will chat to the case-manager on Tues about pushing my schedule along a bit quicker, it looks friggin awesome.

It's amazing what a little bitumen can mean to so many.
Of course they had to lay it down the week before I shifted out of Wellington, bastards!

Crikey so you've left town - was good riding with you while you were here - now what, you'll be doing that Coro loop I suppose.

You'll keep. As will the Hill.

And Norfland, Raglan, blah blah.
Rimutaka hill > Coro hill
Get it the right way around.
Actually that hill looked kinda "civilised" compared to the Taka's. I'm looking forward to it already.

It's a better ride in the other direction, coming back up from Coromandel town.

Have to agree that Rimutaka Hill road is mint now - except for the dodgy parts nearer the top but I can live with that. Went up on Saturday with a camera mounted - check out the recorded footage here if you want (suggest you choose "watch in high quality"):

The bits near the top won't see much done until the Muldoons Corner works are completed.
