View Full Version : Donations needed for new test server

SpankMe
26th April 2008, 00:03
The server I use for backing up KB & testing of upgrades has finally died. The motherboard is poked. It's old so no surprises. Also one of the three hard drives constantly gets read errors.

Any donations of money or PC gear would be greatly appreciated.

What I need:

Socket 775 motherboard
Power Supply Unit
CPU fan
CPU
1GB memory
300GB SATA HDD

or if I can raise $450, I will be able to get everything I need.

New version of vBulletin out next week with some cool new features. As soon as I can get my test server back up and running, I can start on the upgrade :)

Always happy to try and help where I can - how many members on KB? If everyone gave a dollar :doctor: you'd be as happy as the proverbial 'pig 'n shit' - rolling in options.

I have a older dual xeon here, 2x2.4ghz I think, 2gb ram. You'd need add HDDs since it's twin 80gbs are a bit small. And the onboard IDE is not very good. Server mobo you see, they expected you to put in a scsi raid controller.

You can have it.

Since I can't PM you, you'll have to email me if you want it.

Ive got a complete spare (working) PC sitting here which u can have gratis & for nothing. :apint:
Not a server, and a bit old, but it works fine so may be ok for a test box (although u may need some more memory + HDD):
1Ghz celeron, 512MB ram, 20G HDD, onboard LAN and video.

Let me know if you want it. :niceone:

Cheers

?? Really? Who says they are not coming? Maybe people just prefer to make the donation and not post about it perhaps?

Thanks to those you have donated, but still not there yet.

I had to revise the amount of what I need after looking into exactly what hardware I'm going to get as well as forgetting to include a PSU and CPU fan. :o

Don't like asking for money, but just can't afford to buy a replacement myself at the moment.

Slightly off topic but why not run a VM environment. It's easier/quicker to deploy if a server dies on you.

It doubles as the site backup server, as in stores the backups not a fail over.

I tried to connect to my bank online but like all NZ banks, they have made some terrible investments lately and to cut costs must have reverted to a 3GB monthly plan with Xtra. Ultimately, they have exceeded their cap and I can't connect.

Therefore, I send forthwith, a cheque payable to Mr SpankMe for 5c. Sorry about the 25c cheque fee.

Its ok, McD. I did too, even after I knew Spanks had enough for the server thingy. As he points out, there are on-going costs with running an active website, so I reckon slinging a bit of money in the direction of the upkeep, from time to time, can only help preserve the resource used by a great many people. If more users do it there might be a wee cushion-pot available to make server meltdowns and suchlike less of a challenge to fix when they happen.
