OK what a turn out today and the weather held just great, the threat of rain had disappeared by the time this mornings forecast came. Full credit to 4skins as organiser it was a great event.

So off we went to Plimmerton School to start the adventure ride. A few KBers turned up even some of the regular South Island posters to this forum such as Transalper, PLUG, cooneyr and warewolf.

I was riding with Aslan and Bulabil and later with Re-cycled. We saw quite a bit of Busajim and marks too. Oscar was there and so was car, clint640 and Rosie, Qkkid and Qkchk and probably too many others to remember but they can come forward eh!

Now I'm not going to try and name names on the photos because many are not people I know from the forum. Sadly my good camera is still in the shop for repair and my waterproof jobbie just isn't as sharp, but here we go.

Any others that took pics please post them on this thread too.

You know, for the first time on the CCA we never went to Parliament. 4skins is that a snub to the Government or something?

merv
26th April 2008, 21:35
There are only two kinds of off-road surfaces in Wellington - the hard broken rock so sharp it takes the edges off your tyres, and then (when its wet) the greasy clay that needs the edges on your tyres.

merv
26th April 2008, 21:41
The bad news story for me was my brother ending up in hospital on Wednesday and not being able to get to the ride after paying his hard earned entry fee.

That's a nice leg out in the second shot!

merv
26th April 2008, 21:46
Not a cloud in the sky - fantastic!

That busied up the streets of Johnsonville.

merv
26th April 2008, 21:50
Whoops, didn't you boys see 4skins had put up arrows pointing to go right not left?

merv
26th April 2008, 21:55
In this set of pics you'll see a Castrol 6 hour winner, Aslan, Sels1 (or is that Sels2 seeing he is on his second bike?), Bulabil and then famous people waiting for lunch such as Oscar (oh and Grant Dalton).

Just do it then. These are only with my baby waterproof camera.

Then it was off after lunch to the first challenge section up the Dry Creek loop at Belmont - it was bit slipperier than 2 years ago but I didn't stop to take photos of that bit - did anyone?

Note: the CB250 does make a good adventure bike.

merv
26th April 2008, 22:09
I kinda lost my team behind me in this section so waited over 30 mins taking photos so saw many bikes coming through.

merv
26th April 2008, 22:14
While I waited I started thinking they had bypassed the loop - so took off after the pack, eventually dropping back to find them again - no they had not gone ahead.

The clay in the Akatarawas was just so slippery and those stream crossings are always fun eh! Busajim is a legend so he always makes it look easy.

Great shots Merv... I see Glen had his CB out again.

merv
26th April 2008, 22:22
Then we went through Puketiro (bit dark for pics in the forest), Battle Hill and back to Belmont Park onto Takapu road with nice views of the Pautahanui inlet and the West Coast towards Plimmerton - is Porirua a nice city or what? Nah you couldn't quite see my house.

merv

Great shots Merv... I see Glen had his CB out again.

Yeah goes well with him on it too!

In the Belmont park one rider had fallen and the Pajero ambulance had just got there to deal with him but they let us through. I hear the helicopter arrived later to lift him out. Hope all is OK.

Then my last couple of shots at the dinner afterwards. Aren't they a couple of happy looking South Islanders in that last pic?

There you go cooneyr, you told me I had 12 hours to load these, but the dinner finished reasonably early so I was able to do these as soon as I got home, mind you I don't seem to have any pics of you do I?

OK so who else has a few photos to add?

Hope that rain holds off too because I'd like to clean my bike tomorrow.

i got out of hospital at 11pm with a popped AC joint and 3 broken ribs.
thanks to all who helped and kept me warm and comfortable and to the organisers for a ripper day.

i feel like the north end of a south bound cow at the moment and can only lie in one position , arm in a sling so one side feels like one of those thalidomide arms!

Scroll down to the Manage Attachments button when you do a reply to this thread and then select the location of your photos off your hard disk or if you've posted them on the net somewhere else you can insert the link instead.

No fun having an off mate, heal quickly!

4skins commented on how the bike he lent you was going to have a spend a night out in the cold, poor bike!

Must get out and clean my bike now before the rain comes.

No fun having an off mate, heal quickly!

No, but good to hear that we're all at least alive and kicking. That's an impressive array of injuries though -- must have been trying!

Great pics thanks guys. . I didnt take my camera since it was the first time Ive done this event I wanted to concentrate on the riding. (plus I knew Merv can always be relied on to get a few good snaps - cheers mate!)
What an awesome day out. Great weather, great riding, and really good to meet some of the out-of-town KBers and a few others as well.
Well done to John and co for putting the event together.

Jellywrestler - glad you're ok - you weren't looking too happy when I spoke to ya when you were having your wee lie down!

Excellent day out, the 990 continues to surprise me on just how well it handles the conditions. So superiour to my previous F650 its hard to believe.
Previous comment about "Its either mud or tyre shredding rock" isn't far off the mark. Brand new TKC's on the weekend before the ride. The backs looking a bit sorry for its self now.....the Hydro road has a lot to answer for LOL!.

What, you'd sooner have that than have dinner with us?

I'm saying nothing.

Your clutch survived alright too then?

It did fine. The solution seems to be to stop feathering the clutch at the bottom of second -- just lean the bike over a bit more and gas it a bit.

;)

I was bloody glad I took advice and fitted rimlocks, and those D605s are worlds better than the stock Trailwings I took off. I saw one guy come through after the first muddy bit in the morning on a DR200 running stock TWs and no rimlocks. At that point I was thinking "I could have done this on my old tyres no problem." But that clay climb after lunch, up Cleaver's Road or whatever? Jesus, I'd have been digging the bike out. I wonder how he did?

I really had a blast. By about the half way through the Hydro Road I was feeling it, though, and I'm aching this morning.

I might get out and hit that Hydro Road again in a couple of weeks...

merv
27th April 2008, 16:47
Well my bikes are cleaned and put away in the garage and now the rain starts a day later than they said on the Friday forecast so the gods did smile on us for the CCA. Hope most of you are home now without getting wet.

p.s. where was that legend Big Dave?

Great event 4Skins - $100 entry well worth to gain access to some great trails - thanks to you and your team for putting on a great event (again).

Merv - thanks for your company (Alex, BusaBil, Recycled, Gerard van B and Tony F650) also. Special thanks to those who helped me wrestle my little DR back up the bank in the section immediately after lunch (Dry Creek Quarry) where I got too close to the edge in a corner and had the back wheel step down a bank - duh.
cheers Aslan

PS will attempt to post pics when I figure out how to reduce them to the required size.

Don't they just come up as thumbnail on the page anyway and then you won't see them full size until you click on them.

4skins says the next CCA will be in 2010 so don't expect one next year. Last one was 2006 and the photos of that one were on this thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=27185

Yeah good riding with you too.

Just use Microsoft Office Picture Manager if you have Office loaded and edit them - go down to 1024x768 is pretty good - don't go smaller they look a bit puny on my screen below that.

Man, what a great day. My first serious off road event on the KLR and I was very pleased with the event and the bike.
Many, many thanks to John and his team for the superb organisation.

Pic 1 & 2 -waiting at Plimmerton school before the off.

I, like quite a few others, had a spot of bother with instruction 27 - turn left up a gravel track 50 meters past the bridge. Going on up this track led to a paddock with a number of possible exits - none of which matched the route sheet. Pic 3 shows some of the queue waiting to climb a fairly snotty track. However the consesus was "this ain't right" so we turned around, went further along Karori Sth road and found the correct bridge, with the turn as described, 50 m on up the road.

Pic 4, Al, Frank and the bikes at the beginning to Battle Hill

pic 5, Belmont, looking towards Mana, Porirua to the left

As to the question of reducing pic size, there are many ways but the best I have found is to use IrfanView (free download). Ctrl +R brings up the image size edit dialog. Saving as 800 x 600 will reduce a 1.5m image to 120k

No, thats the other green '08. There was also one red '08. Only three in total, but thats all right, we KLRistas enjoy our exclusive rides. If we wanted something common, we would have bought something Austrian :-)

Thanks VERY much John and crew! Top stuff!

Second time wife has been on the back, last time was a couple of hours on the seal on the F650 Classic. First ever adventure run, and she loved it! Did all challenge sections except took the easy option @ 164 and missed the Hydro section.

Only once into the scrub to pull it up quick, But still on the wheels!

Will sort and post some photos tomorrow!

Hope those that :doctor: are recovering well.....

That's the easy answer.
Other way is to Export them from iPhoto and pick a size.

Awesome ride!

First proper offroad event for myself, learnt a shitload of techniques. Riding down that near 70 degree hillside down into Transmission Gully was the biggest challenge for myself. (Must gear the DR down one...) Loved Section 7 even if we got held up by some big orange chicanes stuck on the clay hills!

Thanks to John and crew for the excellent time! I am envious of your playground.....:niceone: Will be back in 2010 with more experience under my belt and will be able to take in the views a bit more (instead of hanging on for dear life!) We did the 42nd Traverse on the way down on Friday, which I greatly thank for doing as it semi-prepared me for the CCA.

Was great to finally meet some fellow KBers and put a face to the name. So who is going to organise a KB Adventure event next?

Had my Zumo onboard, so will hopefully be able to download some of the tracks we did. Did anyone else get any GPS info?

BTW Made the trip home non-stop (except fuel) direct from Whitby to Auckland in 7 hours. Weather was great till we reached Taumaranui where it pissed till Ngarawhahia. Had 2 inches of water in my boots till we could pull over and get the wets on....... And yes, our arses DID hurt!

Yep you did. The first photo from the post I've quoted has a couple of likely looking fullers standing up looking to the right holding cans of some of the North Island finest!? I'm on the right and El Scooto is on the left. Had a bloody awesome time and it was great to meet so many of you all.

I'll put pics up soon. Don't have many - to busy enjoying the riding.

Cheers R

P.S. Got a GPS track log of the whole thing which I'll put up as a Google Earth file (kml) over on Johns thread later on today. I need to edit out my navigational errors first (actually I did this last night but I forgot to send the file to work) :D

Ok here is my few pics. Camera is on the way out so they are not too flash.

1 Start (obviously)
2 Looking south just after the "fenceline" run
3 Lunch
4 Cannon Trig looking southish at Welly
5 Happy camper (El Scooto)
6 Chch crew tying down on the Awahura.

Must say El Scooto did bloody well riding the poor little TTR 250 raid all the way from Chch and back. He's not a little fuller and with gear it had a fair load. Almost didnt make it as the pumper diaphragm in the carb died the Sunday prior and thanks to raiding Skinny Birdman's TTR, ES managed to get it back together just before we left on Thursday night. While doing the CCA something blocked the pilot jet so it wouldn't idle for the ride back down. Few turns on the idle speed adjuster fixed this - about 2500/3000 rpm for a lumpy cam sounding idle :D

Cheers R

Thanks cooneyr for your pics - I didn't envy you guys in tents.

As for GPS tracks I had a look at mine and didn't bother posting it in the end because it was so full of bad readings - I have the Garmins GPSMap76CS, a marine model really, nice and waterproof for on the bike, but its reception in trees is obviously very poor as the track shoots all over the place. I remember it lost reception in Puketiro last time but with the ride doing so much more in the trees like Hydro Rd it was pretty hopeless through there basically being for a fair bit of the afternoon.

Great to meet you guys, see you again.

Most of my CCA pic's were crap. But the ride there, and home again are worth a mention.
Crisis and myself had a looksy through Kaitieke valley on the way to Welly, and Turakina Valley was shining on the way home.
It's going to take a very good future ride to top the weekend just gone.

Ah, there you go Merv! I shoulda known I'd find you here on KB. Great pics and patter, from you and the rest. And Hi Aslan, looking forward to seeing your art work as well, when you get it sorted. I lost contact with you guys through frequent stops to help bogged down riders in the clay uphills in the bush - they were blocking the track so needed to be pointed in the right direction and encouraged to keep their back wheel in the same rut as the front one.
I also will have a crack at loading a few of my own pics when I get a quiet moment. Went back up through the Belmont Road/Takapu Road section late yesterday with 4-skins to liberate his DR650. I'll have a shot at loading the 'jail break' now, it deserves air space even if it is a bit ghostly. Cheers, Re-cycled

Okay, the pics are flowing in at a pace now! Good work Aslan, and the rest of you too. Following on from my success this avo, I will now attempt to load some more of mine. You will note they are more of the scenery than the people, I do love getting into these out of the way places. I have to explain first that Idid not get my camera out very often on the ride as I was running on my own a lot of the time and just concentrating on getting through and staying on top. And I more than surprised myself really, the only off I had was when I unexpectedly came round a corner slap bang into a pair of trail riders running abreast.
Anyways, 1st pic is looking over Tawa from the new subdivision work up on the Horokiwi hills (you could see my place if you knew where to look). The next is yet another shot from the Cannon Point trig, looking down the Hutt river to Wellington harbour. Nos 3 & 4 also from the trig look over central & northern Upper Hutt and down into Whitemans Valley and the Mangaroa Valley !! That shows how high up we were, I was confused for a while as to what the flat areas above the hills were. No 5 is Spyda's chopper about to lift off and 6 is the view down into Naenae (!) from the first of the munitions stores. That also took me totally by surprise, I had no idea we were that close to the Hutt Valley.

And, carrying right on, the next is an out of sequence view onto Merv's part of Whitby, or close to it at centre left, 3 shots of those ever-present munitions stores, a salute from the organiser during a pause in his efforts to 'sweep' me home, and a crowd scene from the after match do, with some veteran adventure riders in the foreground . Which about exhausts me for tonight, my broadband is slower than a slow thing, I expect the young un's have used up the monthly gigs again. Over and out.

Great photo's everyone, and thanks to all the organisers for a fantastic day.
I can't imagine the amount of work and time it must take to come up

Here's a few sorry pics from me.

I realized what it was :brick:

The Conti is a 75% profile - I doubt that the outside diameter would be much different. That 140/80 x 80 thing (Mitas?) that was on Collies bike would probably be better.

Cheers R

Did the 42nd Traverse on the way down to the CCA. We rode the section from National Park side (Kapoors Road) and came out at Owhango - approx 44kms long. Would recommend to ride the track this direction as there are a couple of sharp rock uphill climbs that would either shred you and your bike if stuffed up. If you cannot ride through wet clay and 4wd rut tracks I would not advise on doing the ride, definately do not do it alone - long walk out if something goes wrong. Be prepared to meet Mountainbikers, 4wds, Quads and Walkers. Some spectacular scenery and was really enjoyable, just dont be in a rush to complete it. (we had to meet the group in Ohakune, so was a bit pushed for time.)

Cool video TA. We're damn lucky that you are into videoing the rides :niceone:

Definatly worth mentioning that this is private land and it is not even land that we were suppose to be riding on. I'm surprised that that the land owner didn't come out and have a "chat". We were suppose to turn left after the next bridge to the south onto what is also private land.

Yep, that almost got me, as my odo was right on the distance at that bridge, but it didn't look right.

I was over-reading compared to the route sheet, I thought that as the course had been laid out on 4Skins 990 I'd be pretty close as the KTM's share the same speedo unit but I was always a bit out. Another thing to watch on road book rides is where different sections are laid out on different bikes, just when you think you've got it sussed the error will swing the other way & leave ya guessing again. :Pokey:

Fortunately by the time I got there the land owner was standing in the driveway telling people to take the next track.

I agree that it didnt look right. The stack of wood near the start seemed a little strange - I'd have though that it would have been moved if there was 200 bikes coming through.

I was a little short on the odo but only by a 100m or so not the 500-600m that it was to the next bridge. In the morning I was always a little out from the roll chart but it wasn't consistent. The afternoon was pretty much perfect though. Who knows???

Right you are, or is that left :D - fix now.

Feel sorry for the land owner. There wasn't too much damage other than some missing grass but I bet it wound him up for a bit. There was probably close on 50 bikes when I got up there.

Transalper, I waited until I got home now to download your vid instead of doing it at work, and that is cool it was a better track than the right one we went up. I was following my GPS for distance not my odo and actually overshot the correct left turn and didn't turn off too early. Either way there were just too many bridges and tracks in that valley and none of us matched 4skins distance exactly I guess. A nice big arrow there would have been good.

You got any more vids of the real route anywhere?

A belated thanks to John & his team for an awesome adventure.
I stayed on in the Wellington region for work stuff & just got home tonight.

The CCA was incredible with a great mix of terrain & scenery. The DT230 felt ideal for the ride & I was very relieved I didn't take the XF650. John's tyre (knobblies) recconmendation was spot on & even then I dropped the pressures twice during the ride.
Having changed the front sprocket prior helped with traction & handling but stuffed up the trip meter / route sheet calibration. So I tried to stick with jezzaNZ (Super Tenere) cause I figured that with him being local we wouldn't get lost (thanks for waiting Jeremy). Watching the way he could ride that heavy beast was an inspiration & if there was a prize for the best sounding bike, then the XTZ 750 would have won easily.

I haven't done much actual trail riding, so it was very satisfying to finish the complete route, especially the challenge sections. However I nearly met my nemisis on one steep descent that wasn't actually part of the route (many others made the same mistake). Getting out of that gully was tough for the big adventure bikes.

Many highlights but only the one pic (damm camera), showing the different seat heights between tri boy's Scrambler, my DT230 & chris managements DR650 security locked together outside our motel.

So big appreciation again to ForSkins for his magic & BusaJim for the warm-up ride. Thanks also to coonyer, transalper & El Scooto for their company on the ferry.

Yep, that almost got me, as my odo was right on the distance at that bridge, but it didn't look right.

:first:Well spotted Clint. I always try and draw the corners and turn-offs accurately and the 'wrong' turn was quite different.

In hindsight, I should have had a RESET at the lights in Karori. The distance from the start of Karori South Rd to the correct turn is 3.0km, the 'incorrect' turn is 700m before. I have never even looked up there and it never occurred to me... I don't even remember a second bridge on that road!

Anyway, I got the phone call I was expecting on Monday night. I was able to pacify her when I explained it was all just a mistake by some silly riders!!! She's trying to create a bird sanctuary up there. Looked like quite a useful track, but I don't fancy our chances any more.

Yep, Super Sherpa is a good rig, also look at the new 08 Yamaha XT250, the old XT250 (actually a 225) wasn't near as nice as the Sherpa but the new ones look good.
