Been to this a few years ago - much fun on a bucket in F3, we had a real crowd there. Idiots wouldn't start the buckets with the "real" race bikes as they didn't want us getting in the way. Great fun flying into the first roundabout u-turn going past all the F3 bikes and looking over and seeing another line of buckets going down the other side of them as well. Battler annoyng the Classic guys on his '72 (?) CB100  was good for a giggle as well. Pity those SI guys weren't a bit faster

Good fun if you can get to it.

Go to www.rustynuts.co.nz and look it up. Basically its the rusty's 50th run. So you have 100 hours to get photo'ed beside the first 50 state highways (hw sheild in the background). If actually starts from wgtn but we'll start in picton when the first batch of riders come across.

If the weather is good mangell6 and I will be there. We're already in Picton that morning with nothing to do so it'd be rude not to go.

My cell is 021-415128 if anyone wants to meet up. Otherwise look for a big guy with a red MV cap.

10th Port Nelson Street Race

I was busy putting my engine together though he week when I realised I was missing a part, at such short notice Suzuki were unable to supply one, so I shot around to Glens to rummage through all the spare accumulated bucket bits, unfortunately there wasn’t one there either so as Glen was racing this event I took his bike instead

I head off the Nelson Saturday morning and struck the usual car driving halfwits who think it’s acceptable to travel at 80kmh and 50kmh in a 100zone even if you have 14 cars behind you and are to bloody ignorant to pull off and let them through, a momentary lapse of concentration same me join the ranks of car driving halfwits as I approached a one lane bridge a bit quick and failed to notice the traffic already on it hard on the brakes and reverse off and cop a few very well deserved evil eyes as the oncoming traffic comes off, made me realise just how easy it is for things to go wrong when you’re not paying attention

Arrived in Nelson and got my gear and went and signed in and put the bike through scrutineering, I arrived back at the ute to find a message from Dangerous offering accommodation at his mothers house 5 minutes from the track, this was going to save me a 2 1/2hr round trip from Picton where I had been going to stay at Chic n Charge and Stevos so I gratefully accepted, I was a bit worried about sharing a room with Dangerous as he’s a fairly dodgy sort of guy and would have liked a room I could lock the door so he couldn’t get in, but decided with my sleeping bag zipped up I should be safe

Next morning and in a complete change of weather it bright and sunny, bit of toast for breakfast and off to the track to set up, arriving I find Darryl Cotton already set up in his Bus having stayed the night in the pits I get unloaded and start the usual race day wait, riders briefing comes and goes and it’s on to the practice with us second up

First practice and the bikes feeling good but there’s a fast DT100/RG50 ridden by Paul that I think might give me a bit of grief as he can pull away down the straights, I follow Darryl for a few laps making sure I can get past him and pull back in, next we go out in Pre 82 practice for few more laps and I’m picking my lines a bit better and feeling more confident on the bike

Race 1 Buckets

I getting a big talking up by the commentator about being a sidecar swinger and a good rider etc, I suppose it helped that I spent a season racing with him, but I don’t hear any of this as I’m focused on the flag

Down it goes and I only manage 4th into the first corner, coming off turn 2 I get good drive and pull out and pass Darryl to slot into 3rd,I chase Paul and Steve for another lap with Darryl right behind me and then coming into turn 4 Paul goes in to hot and brushes the hay bales and has to get off the throttle and with Steve right behind him he has to back off to, as I taken a slightly different line and was exiting the corner a bit tighter I was able to pass them both for the lead into turn 5,from there it was head down arse up and go hard, lap 5 and as I take the white flag I check behind and there’s a group of 3 riders about 10 metres behind me trading places and I’m feeling reasonable secure so I back off slightly and give an occasional glance to make sure they’re not gaining on me, exiting turn 7 and there’s the chequered flag with me taking out a win in race one

Race 1 Pre82

As the Buckets are eligible for Pre82 we always cross enter and generally we’re not the slowest, I get immense satisfaction from doing over bigger bikes on a Bucket, but as we roll up to the start line we find the split the start with Buckets being held back, we accepted that when we race with the classics but we’re not very keen on it when we’re entered as Pre82, but the flag drops and the Pre82 bikes head off then it’s our turn and away we go with Darryl and young Keegan(14) beating me into the first corner I ride around Keegan and slot in behind Darryl knowing I’ve got the faster bike and just pulling alongside down the back straight and into corners and as we’re not in with a chance of getting anywhere just having a bit of a play, coming up on a classic bike and Darryl passes him up the inside into turn 4 and I get shut out as the classic just about comes to a halt to negotiate the narrowest corner of the circuit this gives Darryl the break he needs and I don’t catch him before the flag

Race2 Buckets

Feeling reasonably confident after race one, but the flag goes down and again I’m 4th into the 1st corner but pull out and pass Darryl before we hit turn 2, carrying good speed through the corner and getting on the throttle early I get good drive down the straight and pull out and pass Steve through the kink into turn 4 and slot in behind Paul, I chase him for another lap and work out where I can pass, I carry more speed through turn 1 and 2 and decide I can get him down the straight on the next lap, but coming into turn 4 I go in to hot and get a bit untidy and he pulls away, this lets Darryl get along side and we drag race down into turn 5 and I get into the corner first but any hope of a win has gone as Paul has pulled out a gap, I slowly pull him back in but there’s not enough laps left and I have to settle for a second place, but with one race to go I feeling confident I can win the class for the day

Race 2 Pre82

After a word with the organiser we’re not getting a split start and as the flag goes down we’re in amongst the bigger bikes into the first corner although they pull away down the straight, I’m pushing Glens bike harder than I ever have and get past one classic and go after the next one, he gives me a bit grief as he’s far quicker down the straight so I carry more speed through turn 4 and ride around the outside of him in turn 5, he doesn’t let me have it and out runs me into turn 6 and I go around the outside of him in turn 7 and beat him into turn1,when he doesn’t come past me before the next corner I know I’ve got him, another lap and Darryl is past him as well but 20m back, I come past to lap Keegan down the back straight and as I roll off the throttle approaching turn 4 it all turns to custard, the bike locks solid and high sides me at the fastest part of the track, as I start to go over the first thought was “fuck, it’s seized” and then bang onto the track landing on my right and smacking my head and knocking the wind out of me, although I thought I’d hit the track and stopped Darryl said he had to keep going wider and wider as I rolled further across the track so he wouldn’t run me over, I crawl off the track on my hands and knees thinking fuck the bike the marshals can take care of it and slowly get to my feet, feeling a bit dizzy and start checking all my arms and legs still work as they should and take my helmet off, St Johns are on the spot and give me a check over but I only have a few minor grazes and bruises, my new AC11 helmet is now well past it’s use by date with it taking a bashing on the right side, I get back to the pits and realise my day is over and my dreams of taking out the bucket class have disappeared

I toss on the Kb t shirt and wander down to watch some racing and run into Mangell6 and a couple of others whose names escape me, MatthewT turns up as well and then Dangerous wanders around the corner and gets introduced, Salex had earlier turned up in the pits as well, we chat for a bit then the racings over, and then it’s time to head away, the drive back is pretty uneventful and we make good time with little traffic on the road and I chase Dangerous down from Nelson, but I get out of the ute at Amberley to chat to Dangerous as we go our separate ways and just about collapse as my leg doesn’t want to work properly, the bruising on my thigh has caused the muscles to stiffen up and they don’t wont to work but a bit of moving around and they come right

All in all it was a great day despite the accident, it ran pretty smoothly and there weren’t to many hold ups and we had some great racing, thanks also to Manuboy who fed me and got me drinks like the good little pit bitch he is, I might even let him polish the bike one day, roll on next year!

Well I've been thinking back about how I crashed and I'm still not really sure I'd just rolled off the throttle and bang I'm headbutting the ground,we'll probably pull it down and check it out and see if we can sort out what happened because I'd be very reluctant to get back on that bike without knowing why it happenend

I'll have to get some tips off you for high siding cause I'm sure it will happen to me sometime.

I'll be only to happy to help you with that :moon:

Tho if i'd been out there i woulda still kick his ass....

Be more chance of Dangerous doing that and even then it's not very likely :baby:

A couple of days later and my right side is very sore and I've found a few more sore bits, but I can sit down without my leg seizing up although the mobility in my shoulder has got a bit worse so I'll see how it is tomorrow and may get it checked out a bit better
