I remember a few months ago watching an MX racer win his race, he had one of those cameras strapped to his helmet. The audio and video was amazing, especially around loud ass MX bikes and constant jumps etc.

Is it standard USB mass storage (like a pen drive) or do you need to install specific drivers on your PC to access the footage. The website doesn't mention (as far as I can see) which codec is used?

Yeah you can change to sound input. Has two settings. Lo and Hi.
Lo is used if its on a bike etc. Just tones down all the wind noise. The sound was great on my test run. Camera stayed nice and stable too.

Std usb mass storage.
Plug in and away you go.
The sound doesnt work with Windows Vista. But I have downloaded a new media player called VLC media player. Its works fine with that.

Even better. This means that it probably uses one of those nasty, free, opensource codecs. Excellent, should work with Linux then.

Hi all.
Re. these Hero cams.
On the website they are selling these Hero cams for $130-150ish U.S. What do they go for here?
For lots less or even a similar price you can find cams that will give you nicer quality. These are waterproof tho which is nice.
I use a Sanyo Xacti C1 that I picked up second hand fo $150. Great quality and very small and light so can be mounted all over the place. Also have a C5 ($200) that I am going to use as a backwards pointing cam.
Check some of my vids on Youtube for examples and let me know what you think.
http://www.youtube.com/user/peeteey
Am still playing with mounts and having great fun with them. Am going to test a 'fork cam' tomorrow like Sparky Bills posted a link for. Should be easy to setup.
I bought a Gopro earlier this week. The camera itself isn't brilliant, not mini DV quality but better than the average digi cam.
The big selling point for me is the mounting system. It's really flexible meaning you can put the camera almost any where. No dodgy camera setups.
I have a mini dv cam and was thinking about getting some of those ram mounts but you'd have to buy half a dozen of then and it still wouldn't be as flexible.
what does the tank mount look like?

I was at Fry's Electrical in the states a month a go, they had a nifty wee device. Essentially it's a USB memory stick for $100USD, that takes 2 rca inputs (sound and video), and saves the stream to the flash memory on board. Once you're done, you just take it off the bike and plug it into your PC :) Lets you use any camera and mic, so you could stealthily mount a wee pencil cam

The Gopro has a data rate of 4Mbps vs the Canon at 35Mbps so that's only 9x better.
Plus the Gopro will record an hour on a 2GB card so you'll need to buy at least 16GB worth of cards on top of your purchase price.
Plus there is the mounting system. Good luck with that.
And I'm pretty sure you'll be way more upset than me when the camera falls off and smashes to bits on the road.
But anyway, go for it. Can't wait to see your HD vids. Post us a link when they're done.

Funny that, I've borrowed one from work to trial on the bike. Video quality is primo, but it uses motion JPEG to record which takes up shit loads of storage.
1280 x 720P though! It just means buying a few large capacity SD cards...

HD would definately be a great way to go but it's bloody expensive. If you're on a budget (like me *sniff*) you should look into cameras that record MPEG4, the newer the better.
I use a Sanyo Xacti and I think they rock. Cost me about $150ish S/H so I got two! Have yet to use two on a ride but use one almost every ride now.
The more modern ones use the newer MPEG4 compression (H.264 I think?) which means nice quality and very small file sizes.
On my older ones I get about 40-60 mins on a 1gb card and a full battery cycle. Thats at 640x480, best quality it can do which is pretty good. Records straight to an SD card. The quality is a million times nicer than those Hero ones as far as I've seen.
They're about the size of a large cigarette packet and about the same weight too.

That sounds pretty good. Any idea what resolution it records at?
My camera set up I use at track days uses a security bullet camera (CCD chip) and a microphone made up from a circuit I found on the net, plugged into a jxd900 portable media player. The jxd900 has a flash drive and takes SD cards. The video is only 320x240 pixels and is fairly highly compressed, it gets a bit blocky sometimes. It can record probably 4 hours plus on a 2GB card.
A usb stick with RCA inputs is really all that's needed, although I guess its nice being able to review (and show off...) your videos at the track. Can be useful if you're trying to figure out why you fell off.

Trialled the TX1 on the bike yesterday, looks really great but my mount is too shaky. I've got a tank mount one arriving on Friday so it'll be a lot more stable.
So, I'll be able to mount my S5iS on the tank mount and the TX1 at the rear of the bike (I'll make up a bracket for it) at the Kiwitrackday on the 30th. Primo!

What we need is a 2.5" drive that can handle four streams at once... I'm guessing they exist, but are 'broadcast quality' and cost a shit load. From experience, you can never have too many cameras.

I'll buy a 16gb SD card for the TX1 and take some 720 x 1280 stuff, the S5is is 640 x whatever so my 4gb card is good for an hour of recording. This IS good fun!

The usb thing with AV inputs wasn't one of these was it?
http://www.viewtech.co.nz/product.pasp?categoryid=23&productid=39
Because if it was, it doesn't record to itself, it just sends the signals to a computer.
My understanding is you're better off with a flash drive because they're solid state. I'd think a hard drive might be affected by the vibrations in a bike.

You wont see it yet because you are already deep in it over your head, but stand back from it for a few years and you will see the rot and smell the stench, and realise how deeply it had you hooked.
Walk away. The freedom from the outside is scary and breathtaking at first, but you will see that this is actually normal.

It's a bit tricky this video stuff. Shooting through the screen isn't working for me. The Rimutaka one has too many reflections.
In the next one I pushed the camera further into the cockpit but then it bounced around too much.

Hey Bossman! Re: your camera vibration issues. I found on my cameras that setting it to Sports mode (if it has one) usually helps alot as it generally speeds up the shutter for fast motion footage. This wont help the vibration but it will help when you use stabilisation, it won't look so blurry.
Also, keep the ISO setting as low as you can get away with. The higher the number, the longer the shutter has to stay open (generally)
Speaking of stabilisation, your machine has Optical stabilisation. That doesn't help?? Optical is the best of the different types.
Do you run it thru stabilisation software as well? I use Deshaker 2.2, a plugin for Virtualdub. Both free and brilliant! Excellent results with Deshaker, much better than all the expensive 'pro' programs I've seen (including the one that comes with Premiere)
As for head cams with a camera shaped like yours, check out my vid:

Oh yea, Bossman, try mounting your camera down low. The lower it is and the more central it is on the bike, the less vibration you'll get.
Am happy with my results here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxBbqzzuHTo
To get that footage, I hung the camera upsidedown so it can get nice and low ...
Now I'm making a protective screen to go over the front of the camera to protect against stones etc from the wheel.
