Well it was a lot of fun last weekend (12/12/04) out at Glenhope for the Nelson Classic MX Club Xmas fun day.
The track was natural terrain and had berms, tabletops, drop offs and everything..
Some light showers/wind/sun combined to keep the sandflys at bay for most of the day the day and kept the track in great condition.
A 90 degree right just after the start and then a hairpin left led on to the track proper and proved to be the best places to fall off all day (hmmm, slow start and ride around the carnage  )
My XR250 is still standard and I spent the first few races gaining confidence (I have more of a problem with right than left hand corners for some reason).
The track was a bit bumpy but that made me stand up more and only sit into the tighter corners which was probably a good thing to learn.
The drop off caused a few brown pants moments until you realised it had to be taken very slowly so your seat didn't hit you in the arse and threaten to catapult you over the bars.
Unfortunately the little 250 didn't quite have the legs of the bigger bikes and they would pull away on the 2 longer straights and undo all my good work in the twisties up till then.
I was really getting in to it in the last few races, actually going to full throttle several times per lap :2guns: chasing others down but catching them and passing them are two totally different things :)
I have got to get the 21" front built up to sharpen the steering and acceleration wise another 50cc wouldn't go amiss but I'll settle for a tune up.

I've got some pics up at http://classicmx.nelson.geek.nz
I would like to take more pics but actually riding provides some small compensation :D

I still haven't fallen off!

Shane's TS400 will be flat without the stinger. Some good photos there, bet all those air cooled 2 strokes made some noise!!
If this is you...not too bad for two fatties!

Dad reckons Shane should persevere with the stinger as it has better potential but Shane is of the opinion that the stinger means work...
The stinger makes it louder though

That pic is Shane on my XR, I've got red fox pants and top and a blue helmet...

I wish this one was more in focus though...

My suspension held up well only scraping the rear wheel on the guard occasionally over the drop offs and on the berm.
I've had a look at how the guard is mounted and modified it a bit and should have about 4cm left between the wheel and guard when bottomed out.

High flying on a twinshock - he needs that kidney belt! I tried taking my TS400 off road but gave it up because the rear guard kept hitting me in the back of the helmet! Yeah, big twin shocks kick arse eh? The stinger makes a hell of a difference, pull the baffle and put on a stinger,it'll run great.I bought a brand new stinger for mine, but that was over 15 yrs ago.Keeping that big udder hanging under the bike just held on by a mount and some springs is a mission too - I lost mine at speed on the dirt track, the front dropped out, and it came flying after me like a killer boomerang, just missing my head apparently!

The TS did have a stinger, dad kept chopping a couple of cm's off the end each time Shane finished a race...

And the sound from the Trailmaster with the twin straight pipes is pure poetry...

The best sound I've ever heard from a dirt bike.
Not CCM loud but just... :Punk:
