I'm popping up to Orkland next week and just wondering if any of you northern fellas would be keen for a ride (I don't know any of the good roads up there, actually I don't know any of the roads up there). It would probably have to be the 28th or 29th and maybe early evening since most of you would have work? I've still got to sort out what I'm doing when but it would be cool to have a play on some nice bits of road up there.

Well as it happens.... I have some time off then.... An loosebruce gets his licence back on the 28th :eek5: I will have a chat to MR as well....

So upto you, SH22 (west coast), or Coromandel (east coast) or SH16 (North) what time will you arrive in Auckland???

Zapf
20th December 2004, 00:21
Hay u are ON! :) :spudwave: how much time hav u got for a ride? would be happy to show u the roads. and it really depends on weather aya.

loosebruce
20th December 2004, 00:33
Licence back indeed, coromandel is where you wanna be Velox, once there you'll be like "Rimatuka's what" and move up north, well maybe not, but 25/25A far rivals some of the best roads in NZ. All be it minus the campervans doing 2kph round a corner  .
So a ride is on for sure, you can crave up some of these auckland folk :2guns:

Plus if ya need a place to crash for whatever time you need, there is a spare room here and a garage for your mighty stead.

20th December 2004, 20:25
Excellent! Sounds good - but I don't know anything about the roads so it's up to you guys! I keep hearing rumours about SH22 but I've been meaning to do the Coromandel for a while too.
Haven't really sorted out the plan properly yet. I'll be in Wanganui on Boxing Day and head up north the next day and probably hang around until the 30th maybe? I'll either head up from Wanganui or Wgtn on the 27th or so I don't know what time I'd be up, but it would be better to aim for the next day or two because I'd be stuffed anyway. Whatever time's cool - maybe see when you guys are all free, cause I haven't planned stuff yet. I just thought you might all be busy at work during the day, which might determine when'how long the ride can be!
Cheers for the offer of a room Bruce, but it's all sorted cause my little bro's up there and so is another mate that I'll be staying with. Don't know if they have garages though :sneaky2: ! Hey - good timing with the licence! It can be a 'celebratory ride' eh! Heh - just don't lose it on the same day. Oh yeah - Sorry about those mufflers (if he's got back to you). I think he decided it was easier for Motoxxx to buy them since he is in Wgtn.
Yay!

OK, so you will be up in Aucks around the 27th, ride on the 28th maybe??? We can go Kaiaua, Miranda, Kopu, Thames, Coromandel, Whitianga, Whangamata, Waihi then back to Auckland....

Then when you go back to Wellington, we can escort you down SH22...

Zapf
20th December 2004, 22:08
28th or the 29th more like I think.... cause when I rode to Wanganui and back over 2 days I was buggered.... or should I just harden up? :P

Velox when and if you come up from Wanganui, you can perhaps head out to New Plymouth way and come up from SH3. The roads from Wanganui to New Plymouth are very stright, but once you get to Harewa then turn North and head to Stratford then you can take a detour up to Mt.Edmond if the weather is good (on the way up to Mt.Edmond you might see a Possium fur factory shop great place to get some warm furrie clothing), or continue up SH3 and the road is great with lots of fast and medium speed twisties, little traffic and very nice sea views at times. I just came back that way last Friday.

and remember.... bring some spare circlips, ur chain might ask for it :P

good luck and ride like the wind :innocent:

Sounds cool but I wanted to show my little bro the Paraparas (he's heading up on his bike too), so I better head over that way. Oh what a tradgey eh.

:Oi: - it's sorted. After going through 5 circlips I got a rivet link put in. Hope the chain survives though because it's getting near the end of its life and has a really tight spot in it.

Staying with my friend and her fiancee at his folks' house (and at my bro's for one night) so accomodation could be a prob. But def. come up if you can.

Stink mate! Catch up another time eh.

If it is crap weather I'll probably just flag too because I would have done enough riding for riding's sake and would be just doing it for fun's sake (ie. dry roads and dry gear). Better be nice though! But the weather's always changing up in your neck of the woods, so I don't know how you tell.

Heading up on the 27th (tomorrow). Up to Wanganui and back today, then up to Auckland, round the Coromandel and back to Auckland and Wgtn so I hope my already-stuffed chain is going to survive this next week! I'll come back either on the 30th or 31st - I'll just see what happens.
btw SC - sorry, only got your text today (remember I don't use my phone unless I'm on a decent ride or something, try my home phone). Hope it was a good ride!

Can I just make a formal statement that I'll have the littlest bike there so you fellas are going to have to be patient - it may be able to keep up with big bikes in tight twisties but not on the straights or anywhere that requires decent accelleration (or braking). Oh for the 600! :sneaky2:

I'll probably decide when I'm up there, but let me know your plans (via cell). I will be using my cellphone for the next few days because this is all "bike-related-matters". StoneChucker
26th December 2004, 22:57
It is SUMMER, why is it bloody raining?????
To come on the ride, I'd have to cancel the 28/12 drinks, and ride up on the morning/early arvo of the 28th to have a nights rest before the ride. If I did that, and it rained, I'd be rather annoyed!

While I don't mind riding in rain, I don't have any wet weather gear, and riding on unfamiliar roads in the rain is never fun. Also, I'd need to stop at various KB'ers houses along the way, and tumble dry my jeans (eww, wet, cold jeans, not good!)

The forecast is 'areas of low cloud and drizzle' for northern NI, and 'mostly fine' for southern NI.

Yer a bunch of big girl's blouses if you stay home because of THAT.

Anyways, I'm working today and tomorrow, so there'll be no southbound riding for *me*. I'll leave early and go for a couple of hours blatting around the north tomorrow though, I think.

Had a great ride.... Loose Bruce, Milky, PT, Velox, Mattt, Dveus and Zapf turned up... Went through Hunua and then onto Miranda followed by a gas stop at Kopu. Mattt turned back early for a holiday, and Milky turned back because it started to rain (shagged rear tyre).... Bruce was putting on a good pace (whats new...) At Kopu a bunch of teenagers jumped out of their car as it started smoking.... Then flames started licking out of the bonnet... Bruce and I ran to look for a fire extinguisher... found one... I ran out o direct traffic where Bruce went to check on the car... by this time the flames had been subdued and we pushed the car off the road, where myself another guy resumed dousing the flames with the fire extinguisher... That ran out, but the teenagers had grabbed all their gear upon where the car burst into flames again.... Everyone helped clear the gear away and people too.. Well done to the Volly Fire Brigade as the made really good time from Thames..... Its never a KB ride without some excitement.....

So anyway back to riding... Went to Whangamata (Bruce and I went to and fro a bit..) Then off to Waihi ( it was all wet :( ) Down the gorge to Paeroa and then Back to Kopu... Velox and Bruce swapped bikes and everyone had a great time riding to Kawakawa Bay....

Great riding from everyone.. And great not too have any bins.... Sorry i couldnt turn on the dry roads for the whole ride....

Cant wait for the next one :niceone:

Glad to see it was a good ride, shame about the weather. Was it a bit windy as well?

Milky
29th December 2004, 17:38
T'was a good enough ride all in all. Me not being one to do 180 in a straight line meant that I was tail end charlie for most of the ride, but hanging back from Zapf and PT allowed me to work on late apexing and thinking about my positioning on the bike through right and left hand corners, without the distraction of another biker up ahead and the temptation to blindly follow what they were doing.

The fire was an interesting experience... Looked like that group of teens would be hitching rides home from there. In typical fashion, the fire service was there in a few minutes, but it wasnt until we had gone a fair way up on SH25 that ms 'johnny-come-lately' from the local constabulary shot past down the hill...

I headed back through hunua and got caught behind some traffic on the way down, so stopped, went back up and had an un-interrupted run up and down again. I likes that bit of road :love2: I was getting a bit bored with motorway riding up SH20 to home, so I decided to head back through the airport and the back of Mangere Bridge.
Was slowly making my way through the airport when this madman in a big yellow four wheel drive proceeded to arrest me for god knows what. I was detained (against my will) for a good few hours in some dingy shed next to the runway, and subjected to the tortuous sounds of jumbos taking off just metres away... :shifty:
It took all the skill I could muster, but I escaped eventually.

Fuck you a photo of me on Velox's bike  was interesting to ride, at least the TL looks good with Velox on it instead of me. Get your six hundy soon Velox

Was a pretty good ride thou, more than a few wet areas, one in particular that caught me and TS out in a "the back end went that away" moment. Had a good run to kopu, the car was pretty funny, the servo sold outta marshmellows :killingme but all in all good that no one was hurt, poor laydee's what a way to start ya holiday, twas pretty wet over to hikuai, had a awesome run over to whangamata, while the otheres ate, me and TS had another go at it, but it was cut short by the rain chasing us, was wet all the way to waihi and paeroa, but had dryed up by the time we made our way up the coast to kawakawa bay (i think) that twisty hill section just before the bay is insane.

I had heaps of fun but i'm sore as now, but the weekend is coming and cause i'm a loser that will work it and not be getting pissed off my nut i shall ride instead.

Hope Velox enjoyed the ride up here in Aucks and the roads up here, have a safe trip back south.

Yeah - awesome ride, definitely beats the Takas. Apart from the "phantom cows", exploding cars, and slippery roads. Thanks guys for coming out for a hoon and cheers you three lads that showed me how to get there and back! Those roads must be even more amazing when they're dry and without all that traffick!!! Gotta do that one again! I saw in the paper today that a lady died and a couple of others were badly injured in a crash on the road between Kopu and the eastern coast at about 1pm which must've been just after we went through. Not good.

Good to meet a couple of you guys that I didn't know - Dveus and Mattt (sorry - didn't realise you were going, thought you were saying bye to the guy on the R1).

Good to hear you enjoyed it, how was Piha?
Didn't go to Piha in the end cause the weather was so crap! Had a good ride back yesterday though - sunny the whole way. I went via SH22 to see what all the fuss was about but something strange happened when I tried to go to Raglan (but gave up 5km after the turnoff when the road turned to gravel), cause I came back onto 22 (in theory anyway) and ended up in Ngarauwahia without going through Whatawhata or backtracking along 22. :sly: Hmmm. Either I invented a new road or I completely didn't notice Whatawhata.
Ok - just further consulted a map and it must have been a weird road to Raglan (not the usual one), because it did say 25kms, and it must have meant Raglan Harbour not the actual place. Sorry - just thinking out loud here. Good ride back though.

Posh Tourer :P

Yeah the end of SH22 is gravel after Ngaruawahia-ish.
??? This gravel was way off 22 though, heading what I assumed (but that's not saying much) west towards the coast. Ah - who knows.

Is it better than the takas? :P
I think I prefer the Takas (except they're so short) because the straights on "22" don't do much for my bike - I like the twisty stuff. But then again I was trying to work out where on earth I was the whole time so maybe I wasn't getting into it as much as I could've.

Stupid thing - stuffing up my quotes.

Motu
1st January 2005, 22:06
To be heading west down that way you must of been going towards Te Akau, that's ALL gravel, but you have to turn right off the lower SH22 that the sports bike wimps won't ride, and it turns north before going west again - not likely you would do that surely? To end up in Ngaruawahia you must have taken the normal sports bike route.I think you did lower SH22,turned back and took the right turn at the intersection and headed to Ngaruawahia, you missed Whatawhata cause you were back on SH1.

mattt
2nd January 2005, 06:20
