A couple of weeks ago I was given an oppurtunity to "try out" an Ohlins TTX shock on the 750. As you do, I had heard a bit of feedback from various guys who have been using them for the last twelve months, and will freely admit to being a bit sceptical about how good they are. I'm afraid I have to eat my words.
The difference in comfort, for a start, is VERY noticeable. Looking into it, it's reasonably easy to see why. As the damping happens at the moment it's required, the damping force required is less. The feeling of utmost security from the back end of the bike is awsome.
I have Ohlins cartridges in the forks with the latest (for now!) bending shimstack mid-valve set up, and working in harmony with the new shock has made the front end feel so much better as well.
At approx $2400.00, the TTX shock isn't cheap, but as a higher value item(as I have found with multiple dealings with Robert), the shock WILL have a good resale/trade value when it comes time to change bikes etc.
For now, I'm even leaving the clickers set at the "as delivered" setting, and the only other adjustment that has been made is setting the preload on the spring... a two minute job.
The SU678 shock I now have is made for the K8 GSX-R600/750, and I see on the Ohlins website they are recommending the shock for the '06 onwards, which means it will be the right one for the '09 model as well.
So, Robert, you were right! It's not just marketing hype... the Ohlins TTX shock is up yet another level

Gassit Girl and myself were fortunate enough to recieve an invite to the recent official opening of Crown Kiwi Technical, and amongst the attendees was Bengt Ohlsson, the Ohlins manager for the area. Both Annie and myself had quite long and detailed discussions with him, and what really came across to us was the interest that Ohlins have in your average Joe Blow road rider. Bengt was genuinely interested in our feedback and impressions. I was VERY impressed, to say the least, when I was surrounded by guys like Greg Murphy, Aaron Slight, Stroudy, Brian Bernard etc etc, that an Ohlins big wig took the time with us.

I love my TTX, it showed the stock front up for what it was... very very average in comparison. The rear hard and firm sticks like shit to a blanket and inspires confidence and just wants to be pushed harder; little squatting and drive is a plenty. (I'm sure MR T will love that analogy). That left the stock front as the weakest link, I've had the front revalved now by Robert I but haven't had the chance to ride the bike yet as the rear sub frame has broken AGAIN..

I wonder if my DRZ 400 SM would benefit from a gold tickle up and make me slide into those corners..??

ps. When i took my front forks out I happened to thread a brake caliper bolt; Mr Taylor happily remedied that for me too. I wonder what his coffee skills are like

Good to see you're loved enough to get free trials John BUT hob knobbing with the big wiggs doesn't wash with me :p

Ok, so do you know any easy Banks to rob? Coz I want one. Pussy, I still am telling people your story of investing in one set and then being able to trade them when you change bikes - because that makes all the investment a long term one and worth doing. I don't have the reddies yet but ....

Mind you, I was thinking about "$1,800 for a set of Ohlins" thinking that would do me for front and back ... and now you're saying $2,400 for just the rear :gag:

you'll need five large for the forks too.

C'mon, sonny. the first taste is free.............

unlike drugs, at least with suspension you get something lasting for your money.

Not if you get Robert to fit Race Tech Gold valves... approx $350.00 for compression pistons, and the same for rebound, although in some cases the rebound just needs re-shimming. Add to that a set of springs, oil and labour... then you end up with great performing forks for a cost effective price. The Ohlins 46PRX shocks (the hi/lo speed damping type) are about $2000.00, cheaper for the single compression adjuster type.
You would be surprised at the economies available.
I have never regretted spending the dosh on my bikes' (several of them) suspension.
Kendog: have another ride on my bike in the near future and check out the latest mod, and Grub: you're welcome to have a blast on the sem fiddy, too

Edit: If you have a bike that Ohlins make their FGK cartridges for, they're approx $2700.00

Of course it bloody would!
Robert put an Ohlins on a DRZ SM when he was still in Hawera

After another little scoot on the 750, it amazes me how the feeling of comfort AND enhanced feedback/control is built in to the TTX 36. I will get around to experimenting with different settings, but for now I'm very happy with the recommendation that Ohlins have for my model bike. We're living in the best of times as far as progress in suspension technology goes
