dvd ripper? free?

are there any free programs to rip rented dvds. i refuse to pay upwards of $70 for retired disney dvds, so figured if i could rent and rip it.

what free programs do you use, and recommend. dunno if dvds from blockbuster are rip protected or not, but its worth a try.

Fly to south east asia and buy all the new releases for $1 each. count on getting a fair percentage of duds though.

factor in the cheap ladyboys, opium and watches and the trip pays for itself.

DVD Shrink was good, but the owners got busted a while back, and it hasn't been updated since, so you'll find some of the newer ones don't work.

I use DVD Fab Platinum 4.

Works really well.

I heard of a program called clonedvd2 thats supposed to be good, and simple- shrinks and burns all in one hit. 100% success rate apparantly.
apparantly you could combine it with a program called anydvd which removes copy protection on the fly, then you would be invincable........maybe a pm would make things clearer. :)

DVD Shrink still has a good hit rate, Most DVD's no matter how recent don't have very strong encryption, And those that do can be ripped with a free program that gets updated, such as DVD Fab, and the resulting files can be then fed through DVD Shrink to be reduced to fit a single layer disc.

Whether that's true or not, its also true that the author of DVDShrink worked for Nero, and wrote Nero Recode, which wont copy commercial DVDs.

DVD Fab Platinum is great. I use it for making backups of the kids DVDs. I use the generic video conversion option to make 1GB AVIs and throw them on the Home Theatre PC. Then I put the DVD away. No more having to buy multiple copies of DVDs cause the kids wrecked them. :)

if you want programs like this just go to www.download.com and look up dvd ripper. Some of them rip them to iso files which means you also need a program like daemon tools to run them (it acts as a pretend dvd drive to play dvd's off the hdd instead of off a dvd disc), but without causing a loss in quality. Other rippers may change them to mpg files or some such with a loss in quality if you want to put them back on to a dvd at some stage..

Nah. There's no reliable source for this info. However, the balance of probability would IMO lie with the author at least have a part to play in Recode. When DVDShrink was discontinued the official website did have this info on it, but as the author was always anonymous its hard to absolutely verify.

Nevertheless, DVD Decryptor and Nero Recode make a powerful backup program, and certain aspects of Nero Recode (not just the buttons - look at the compression routines which are automatically selected to crunch as much as possible of the extras and titles pages - exactly what you would have done in DVDShrink manually) would tend to suggest that its a development of the original DVDShrink concept.

I guess we'll never really know the truth though and I'm not really too concerned about that.

Rumour has it that Any DVD bypasses the copy protection, CSS and all that, it updates every few days, and Clone DVD rips em, with or without menus and trans codes to fit a standard disk, and works very well indeed. Not free, but cheaper than a single Disney DVD.
Of course, I wouldn't know that for sure :-)

There is really only 1 program I "know that people use" to do this :)) and that is DVD Decryptor, then you need some other programs to do the donkey work to re-encode back, you also need to understand the difference between DVD5 and DVD9, or you could also check out afterdawn.com or doom9.... ooh I should go now for fear of incriminations.

apparantly, they say that if you look really hard and for earlier versions, there are product keys available for download,:innocent: but the would be just as bad as making copies of dvds, which I would not condone at all :mellow:
