View Full Version : Quoting embedded images

An occasional area of sensitivity between more delicate members and Moderators involves the quoting of embedded images.

The site's rules specifically mention this practice as a no-no.

It's not hard to remove these.

When using the "Quote" facility, the full text of the item being referenced appears between codes e.g. [ quote=Hitcher]Please read the site rules![/quote ]

If there are any embedded links in quoted material, they will be bracketed by codes containing a URL or YouTube or some other reference. Please delete these and any other content that's not relevant to your reply, including large amounts of text.

Extraneous material adds little value, is irksome to readers who have to scroll through reams of material that has been posted earlier in the thread, delays response time for members on dial-up connections, and it hogs server space.

Please don't do it!

A vast majority of the work on here I encounter is this very issue.

If you do it accidently, will sorry do??
Actually, seriously, can you go back and edit it out if you realise you have sinned after you have posted?

For some strange reason those buggers from over at ADVRider like it that way. Even though I visit there I must be a KBer because I find their way of displaying photos painful. You're trying to scroll down a page and the damn page keeps growing as the images load so you keep on scrolling on your mouse.

Surely this would be fairly easy to enforce server-side. Simply don't allow < img > tags within [quote] tags.

Then what would I dish out infractions for?? Being a dick?? (do that anyway but that's not the point)

Easier to infract you for posting a message that doesn't quote correctly without the [noparse] tags.

For some strange reason those buggers from over at ADVRider like it that way.No they don't. They have the same site rules about quoting as here and pretty much everywhere else. You might notice it more often because more posts there have nice in-line images, so when idjits quote the entire message it's more noticeable.

Yeah - the first time I quoted something with an embedded doover I was surprised to see that the embed came up as well. I expected it to disappear like any quoted quote does...but before I could modify it out, a certain zealot had me nailed to the wall for it. SO he kids you not - you gotta be QUICK!...eh Hitcher...? :innocent:

I am a big pussycat really. I hand out full infractions for quoting embedded images and videos at about a 1:20 ratio to the warnings I give.

Erm, just wondering what the point of this rule is when members can stick a bunch of images in their signature that then show for every post they make?

(Yeah, I get that re-posting a huge image is a pain in everyone's butt, but ...)

The forum limits the size of pics in the signature, and the total length.

I have had warnings for quoting replies that have had photos in them. From what you have said it sounds like you have to be a bit of an IT whizz and have a lot of time to delete a photo and not all of us grew up with computers. May I suggest you perhaps configure quoting so the photo can not be included in the quote. I have never wanted to include any quoting of photos anyway.

Looking at what is contained within square brackets [ something ] doesn't constitute IT wizardry.

However a more interesting note is since ADSL/VDSL and even Fibre are increasingly the norm and the days of painful Dialup are mostly confined to the history books - is there grounds for a relaxation on this policy (to the Mods) or are you going to stick with 'Quoted images are effing annoying to scroll through when trying to read a thread, so no'

and that old 'it takes up server space' - horse shit!
They're neither hosted nor so much as cached on your (overseas not even in new zealand, boo! Hiss!) servers...

Pah.
But naw. Keep em ban cos they're annoying.

There are still plenty of areas of NZ with substandard service. There are places that EUBA services are not available, BUBA only. That's of course, still populated etc, and dialup elsewhere.

Then again, for rural, there are more and more wireless services... heartening to see...

It's not IT whizzardry. Just delete the
and
that you read in the quoted text, and everything in between.

Oh my goodness...

Next you will want people to to use the following correctly:
whether and weather, we're and where, fare, fear and fair, son and sun, know and no, new and knew, and so on...

plus, no doubt, to drive on the left side of the road and not use an apostrophe with plurals...
