View Full Version : How far would you drive to help a KBer in need?

IE with a broken bike from a bin or mechanical failure, how far would you go with a trailer/cage or ute/cage to go get them/help them get going etc?

Cant put a number on the distance - depends who really.

Someone I know very well and a good friend - would not really matter where they are!

Anyone else? Well I guess since there are so many KB'ers I would limit myself to north shore. But really depends on the specific circumstances.

MIXONE

It would depend on 3 things to me.
1.Who it was.
2.How much petrol in my car(it's a tad thirsty)
3.How much money in my pocket(to pay for said petrol)
Otherwise hey I'm always up for a roadtrip.
Distance wouldn't come into it.

I guess for a random person under about 100kms but if it is for sombody i know and trust (and i have money for gass) i would go as far as needed.

Subike
3rd May 2008, 13:33
what he said ^
depends upon person, location, available funds,
unfortunatly, the reality of help in this situation is not clearcut , will you wont you.
Because of my location, I would be of more assistance as a secure location for a damaged bike to be store for collection from an incident with say 100k north, to say 50k west of here.
A subjective question, with no real solid answers,

Dunno about a kb'er - I don't actually know all that many kb'ers personally, but for my mates - as far as I need to go. That goes for whatever is wrong, broken down bike or otherwise.

For a random kb'er that I didn't really know but who needed help - well, if it's not too far or if it sounds like a good ride to get there, why the hell not. If I've got time etc.

Distance is relative to need, and relationship. Too hard to put a km base on it.;)

I've gone halfway down 22 to pick up some broken KB bikes.....but as above, time/place/person/fuel etc....

As above, situation ethics would apply, every time is different. :shifty: John.

Yes, it does depend who it is needing the help and whether a closer option would be more practical for both parties.

Depends entirely on who the KBer is.

And the plural of km is km.

No option for 0kms. Wouldn't go out of my way to help a KBer. Would be reluctant to go much further than 1000kms each way for a friend though... would rather pay for there flight back and freight for the bike.

Gone to Aukland for a mate, and couldn't be bothered goin into town for an unknown or disliked.

Given that this seems to be the generic answer, it would appear that only a real wanker on here is ever actually stranded.

If it were for any of my friends on here, I'd happily hitch the trailer up and go to Invercargill. Well, not happily, I mean, who the hell would be happy to go to Invercargill??

For Georgie or 007XX, I'd walk that far... :wari::wari::wari::drool:

For SkidMark - I'd happily drive that far just to throw stones at him. And then drive home alone. With a smile.

There's a bunch of very cool people on this site - and they'd find a helping hand from me if needed (just holler!), but equally, as stated by a bunch of people, there are some I'd just as soon not help out.

But, I'd probably even stop for skiddy if he was broken down on the side of the road and i was driving past...

Yep definitely depends who it was. If it was a stranger, under a 100 kms, someone I didn't like, to the bottom of my road, unless I felt I could get some gloating in. Someone whom I consider a friend... the ends of the earth!!! Nah, I lie, depends on the situation and who it was, but probably a LONG way!! hahaha

LOL!!!!

Sorry Georgie and 007XX... And 007XY... :spanking:

Again.... "Depends" is the word...

gee i am glad i am not the only one thinking that...

Truely you are not the only one

Well, If someone says "Why won't you go? Hes still a biker/known person/human/etc"
then I'll reply "Why don't YOU go?"

as far as i had to. the beauty of KB is 99% of the time there will be someone within 50km that would help so you never have to go that far anyway. in saying that, as i stated at the beginning i would go as far as i had to ... ... ... yes even for katman or skidders haha

Cheeky blighter.

I've been halfway down 22 to collect a friends bike after he collected a cow.
I've been to Port Waikato to collect a bike that failed to make a bend and landed on some rocks on at the seaside.
I've collected a bike from a nasty spill over the edge of Twilight Road (Hellraiser and The_Dover helped pull it out of the undergrowth 5 metres down)
2 of these accidents were good mates, the other was a comlplete stranger to me at the time.

You are a good man mcJim.I hope I never need to but at least I know there would be help at hand if needed down south.
PS Can you please book us some semi decent weather for the Burt Munro this year?

Been from Hamilton to Auckland and return to pick up a binned bike from a track day, then took the said bike to Shaun Harris to get fixed.

Went and got the Quasi van to pick up the same bike from above when it binned in Hamilton (after being fixed by Shaun)!

Arranged to get a bike (hyosung at that!) back to Wellington on one of my trucks for a Kiwibiker who binned on 22.

Drove from Hamilton to Raglan and return and return after Quasi cut the ignition of Torques race bike the night before leaving to go to Wanganui street race! . . . . just to get tools, wires, cable joiners, multi meter!

Drove from Hamilton to Whangamata and back to pick up Bruce and Daryls stuff after the accident ......

There are a few who I would go anywhere to help, because I know if I was in the same situation they would do exactly the same no questions asked.

All the rest .... well ..........

Depends on a few factors...

Who they are
Where they are
What exactly is needed

Distance though is not an issue....

pretty much the same as everyone else has said.
i'g go anywhere over taranaki for some one on here or up to te kuiti and down to wanganui.
if a KBer one needed a place to stay and they were at a loose end i'd give them a bed , no worries ( now that we've moved into the bosses house and got extra rooms)
when my chain snapped and locked up the bike , the amount of randoms that stopped to see if i needed help amazing.
They all had bikes or were interested in bikes.
So if you ever in the area and get into trouble give me a call. my number is on that breakdown forum , wherever that is.
I've got tools and welders and stuff but i aint a mechanic.
would take you over to Senseis for that sort of stuff.

i'd drive fookin miles

i've had the misfortune of binning recently and the help I received from my fellow riders and relatives was waaaay above and beyond....

we're talking close to a collective 2000km to help get me and my bike sorted, so I wouldn't hesitate to do the same

As for me I would help out as much as i can .. & distance in the north island would be doable, after all its only wot I hope someone would do for me if i ever needed it ..

As most others have said.. Depends who it is... If it was some one very close than I would go as far as I could to help, But sadly our 4WD is very thirsty in the petrol :( so I would be rather limited.

Would help as much as I could though :)

You deserve the help if needed, hell you picked up "the parcel" round trip of 350km.As they say karma works.
There is an absolutely amazing network within the bike ranks, both here and other networks. You can say I need a bed and will get offers from people you have never met, probably the only other group with similar people who go out of the way would be speedway people.
Distance to me is immaterial,if you know the person the further you go,I'd offer bed at least.

thats why I have built quite a phone database from around NZ .. if someone is closer & can assist all good .. however if someone called & needed help .. no probs would get my good organizational skills to work, & make it happen

yes Karma comes around, however its more about basic human decency helping someone in need ...
