View Full Version : Respect to 600cc riders
After taking a R6 out of the shop yesterday for a work ride over to Whangamata I now have a new found respect to all you 600cc sportsbike riders
I'm used to riding on torque or at least 40+ more hp so had a hell of a time trying to get the thing to "go" without getting the feeling of murderising the poor wee bike!
Reckon I'll stick to my larger bikes to drag my fat arse around...much easier.
Respect

I remember seeing an R6, a later model, tearing through the middle of traffic after just missing getting past them at the red light then doing this incredible wheelie at balancing point up to about 140+. I thought "shit, do I really need a 1000?!".

600? Heck! You don't know how nice, powerful and swift the 600's are!!! Coming from the 150 and feeling like it was going to blow up every hill (seeing as how to stay over 100kph you have to be near red line) the 600 is a joy :D

First time I rode a 600 I loved it. Blood rushing to the back of the head, 100k done without a problem, it was awesome.
First time I rode a 1000 I thought from all that I have heard about them I was expecting it to kill me, and it didn't. I expected more. Suppose I need more time on one so I can open it up around corners rather than the Wellington Motorway.
First time I rode a VFR400, I thought it was quick but not extremely so, but it was still good fun and worth getting just for cheaper insurance. :p
How on earth have you managed to afford a 600?! When I got quoted on insurance for one of those things it was going to cost $3000 a year :gob:

A 600 would be good for you Dumpty, great fun on the track... you have to ride the bike as apposed to ham fisting it up

600/4's should be sold with 2 canes - so you've got a spare for when you break the 1st one.

Yes I'm well aware of that,obviously....my point is that I found it difficult to ride on the road without screaming its head off and therefore end up well over the speed limits.
Personally I prefer torque as I find it easier to ride

In that case, have I got the bike for you...!:2thumbsup
Yep, thats my reason for disliking 600cc sports bikes on the road. Shit all midrange.
Princess, your bandit doesn't count. It has a way more useful and flexible motor than a supersprotsboik
I wonder where my little 600ss would sit in this conversation? do I hear the word "Gutless" being bandied around?

"Gutless" is such a harsh word...."intestinally challenged" sounds a bit more bike senstive, you wouldn't want to hurt the poor things feelings

People say 1000cc is to much others say its not enough from the couple of 600cc & 750 bikes I have ridden they are great for the market they have been built for . But do like a bike that has plenty of torque hence the RSVR . But the 600cc of todays standards are that Trick even the Aprilia works hard to keep in front off them .

Ducati's don't have feelings, after many years of physical abuse from the throttle and verbal abuse from everyone else they are now totally insensitive, prefering to be loud, inconsiderate of other road users and rebellious.
You want torque?
You want a powerful mid range?
You want a top end adrenaline rush into the redline?
You want a bike that will climb a steep incline like the Ngauranga Gorge in top gear at 2000rpm, and still accelerate away instantly and smoothly, with no need to change down?
Three words ..get a triple.
Or these three words..six..seven..five
I have a 600 TT Triumph, and have gotten to love it.
I brought it primarily for the boy to ride and maybe buy off me when he's ready.
Thought, this things too small for me, I have my other 2 bikes, he can use this.
First time I took it for a ride, I rode it like I do my Ducati and Speed Triple.
Damn it was dead, sluggish, weak.
Then it clicked, 4cyls, small bore, looked at the rev counter, ahh.......it goes to 15000rpm.
Was sitting in top gear at about 100 kph, slammed it down into 2nd, wound it on, changed at 12000rpm in all gears........woooohh.........when I stopped, the grin on my face was unreal!
Now, I ride it as often as I can, ok, helped by the Triple being in bits for weeks, but I love it.
Was up the Wairoa rd yesterday, keeping pace easy with SV1000s, Triumph 1050s.
They might be in top or fifth climbing the sweepers, I'm in 4th or 5th, so what.
It even has a reasonable roll on in top.
But the sound of it screaming at 13-14000rpm is wicked.
I can honestly see now why guys love 600s.
Light, handle, and fast.
I'm sold.
Will I sell my litre type bikes, naaa...........but the 600s sure earn respect.

So have you made up your mind which way your gonna go re the poll you had going a while back chris ?
would love a 1098 to add to the stable hehe then again an R1 wouldn't go amiss or for that matter a lotto win, a track day event every weekend at manfield and ummm awww lots
I should make it 100% clear that I'm not saying that I thought the R6 or 600cc sports bikes were/are "bad"...my point is is that I didn't have the skill or experience to ride the bike properly on the road.

600's are awesome bikes IMO but they just don't suit the way I ride on the road.
Would love to have a crack on one at Taupo though and due to a certain gent toasting a R6 demo at work last weekend I may just get a chance as it looks like we're may be making a track dedicated work bike

Its how you use that torque not how much torque, no point sitting on 180 hp rocket and not being able to ride it past 14k rpm.
It's what you do with it, not how big it is, not that I have any problem in that department anyhow :niceone:

Thats exactly what I was talking about but with a slightly different point of view. Excellent stuff mate! The only reason I constantly use 2nd gear is that when I do have to brake I just button off the throttle (and this can be done mid corner too if uve gone in too hot), instead of hitting the brakes which of cause has the effect of standing the bike up. Buttoning off the throttle, I've found doesn't stand the bike up as much. But if ROSSI has said he'd rather use a higher gear then I shall certainly try this technique.
However, I will be wary of the fact that he would most certainly be talking about riding on the track, which removes like 100 unknown variables out from the equation.
Bling coming your way. I love it when I learn something new for free.

This is why I find a SV (and others with their liter bikes) quite forgiving to ride. Even if I have to scrub off a fraction more speed mid corner, it isn't too big a deal as you don't lose the good drive out from the now lower rpm. A 600 probably wouldn't be that forgiving.
But if ROSSI has said he'd rather use a higher gear then I shall certainly try this technique.
His motoGP bikes probably have pretty big wide torque curves though.

.
Get caught in the wrong gear on an R6 coming out of a corner and you'll get left in the dust. No torque, even compared to the other 600's.
An SV650 will make obvious gains coming out of corners up against the R6.
Impressed with the K8 GSXR600 though, actually does something in the midrange.
