View Full Version : Canterbury: Westpac Rescue Helicopter fundraising ride

Suzi Q

I drew the short straw and will be organising this event for CHCH riders. This is a NZ wide event to be held 28 June 2008. The goal of the ride is to raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and also to protest Cheese Cutters. please follow this link and check out what it is all about. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=72686
The CHCH ride will not be as long and involved as the Auckland ride, I was thinking of a run to Kaikoura up the coast road then back through the Inland route - but I am open to suggestions.
So far I have had talks with Sportzone Suzuki who are happy to be involved.

Right the route has been sorted. We will meet at the Peg - belfast pub - at 10am and leave at 10:30am. Then on to Greta Valley tavern for a wee break and then up to Waiau for a drink etc. Back to chch to the garden city helipad at around 3pm to hand over the moneys raised. I have checked and there will be a crew on duty there - this is the base for the Westpac rescue Helicopter. I have attached our poster that we will be posting in the bike shops - thanks heaps to Rashika.
If the weather is crap we will just do the Scargill Loop - meet at the same place, go to Greta Valley and then turn left to go through to waikari, back through the Weka Pass to Christchurch.

Yip happy to help out Suzi, best ya contact the hellie service at chch hellies and let them know. Unfortunitly our in house poster graphic chick is between jobs, so getting some around the shops for advertising may be tricky at this short notice.
Now for smaller bikes just the Leader road to the pub as a meet up place might be beter than the full haul.

You will find that the Rescue Hellicopter organisation will be very supportive of this. We got a real good response from the Westpac up this way. We will send SuziQ a copy of our flyer, which is basically whats on the news page, once you have it in your pc then you can play around with the words that need adjusting, you'll figure it out im sure. ...Mark

I have had a suggestion put to me for a route etc for the ride. Meet at 10am at the Peg (Belfast pub) and ride to the Waiau Pub, have lunch there - 2 choices, pub or cafe - and then back to chch to the helipad at the airport to hand over the money we raise.
All welcome, the more the merrier and the more people who turn up the more money raised for the rescue helicopter.
The poster is being worked on and is looking fantastic so far. I will be contacting radio stations to get the word out, but will wait untill we get details finalised. I hope to finalise as much as possible over the next week so we then have plenty of time to get the word out.

Oddly, touristy souvenir shops are the easiest place to get them from because of the whole merino natural fibre thing. They have them here for $25 : http://www.artworksnz.co.nz/Digicart/fusebox.cfm?FuseAction=engine&CaID=10 check out about half way down the page.

I'm sure there must be other places you can get them from though.

hey check this out... freebees to give away on our ride, what we are looking at is a raffle ticket with every entrant, we will draw the winner at the helie pad, just a thought at the moment other wise spot type prizes.

NB: those chosing to do the chch ride, we are looking at shortening the ride due to the harshness of winter hitting, the ride will be to Greta valley then inland to Waikari via Scargill then to the airport.

I rode the leader road last sunday with Lemans
apart from the usual spots of grit, it was dry and very rideable, no perma frost patches....
The Scargill Valley road is dryer heading from Greta to Waikari, but comming the other way its not as good, tree shade making for some damp slippery spots where there is a bit of moss on a couple of corners.
I managed to get a new clutch basket for the XS, No vibration from 90 to 100k anymore, so will be able to join the ride from Greta and cruze at a slower pace ....looking forward to this....mmmm

The Marketing Manager for Westpac is offering a heap of helicopter money boxes to our rides, use them for decoration on your bikes, prizes or whatever. Her thinking is that it is a visual aid to the fundraising. We are saying yes to them. Do you guys want some too?

This is a stupid fueling up question...:Pokey:

I've only only taken the new bike out on open road a few times and not sure how far she'll get on main tank and reserve.

I'm assuming there'll be a suitable place in Greta Valley, or would some people have to have a drink before then and just catch up after?

Cheers

You reckon? It sputtered a while ago at only 130km, some was open road the rest was commuting.

I think it's supposed to be 13/3L tank but only got 11L (last time) from main tank. so I don't know if I'll get 5L from reserve. The guy I bought it off said that he would start looking for a station from 200km.

I'll fill up out by the Peg and just see how she/we go. Really looking forward to it though!

Fair question mate.
not a noob one
The Gretta Valley Shell shop is open 7am - 7pm - 7 Days.
Gayleen & Warren will be happy to take you gold after filling your tank.
Same price at the pump as Amberley....well was today when I bought some fuel.
Scargill Valley road is nearly clear of Ice grit, the only spot to be aware of is a section about halfway that is signposted to 50kph that as been resurfaced , has loose chip for about 500m, other than that ...ride safe!

No sorry, this ride has just been put togeather to match the Dorklanders, its KB organised ie: SuziQ and myself... sorry but if we were to supply badges we could run at a loss and that wouldnt help us, and sure as hell wouldent help the rescue cause.

Now remember why we are doing this ride... to help run the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, a service that us as bikers may have to use some day and as I already have then I can say you will be bloody thankfull for it.

Next is to pretition the wire roap barriers... once again something that we as bikers would prefere not to see used.

OK so, at the meet up point you will find me at a Nissin D/C 4x4 (also dangerous for bikers ;) intro ya self sign the petition and hand ya donation over to SuziQ, then we will take a wee spin... cheers

...sorry but if we were to supply badges we could run at a loss and that wouldnt help us, and sure as hell wouldent help the rescue cause.

There were a few words shared about getting badges or pins made to sell on the day. Even though we are sort of "Dorklanders" we decided as you state not to go to the expense of getting something made that would cost money, and potentially take money away from the people we are raising money for. We are in this for the love...not the badge.

I will be bringing a small box of badges for those who want them. They aren't flash but still a momento for those who want them.

Only $2 - that is cost price so no profit being made, unless one of the organisers want to take them off my hands at cost and sell them for more with profit going to westpac heli.

Badge is an angel on a motorcycle (very appropriate I reckon!) and the packaging has "Never go faster than your guardian angel can drive".

If all badges sell out then names, addresses and gold coins will be collected and I will get more and mail them to everyone (CKMC will pay for all the postage).

Hope for good weather! See you there.

Thank you very much mate - the badges sound awesome. i will have my $2 ready for one.
The ride is still going ahead and hopefully the weather will not be too bad. I have spoke with Willy from the waipara pub and he and a few mates will be meeting us in Belfast. I will take my camera so we can have some photographic memories and there will be some reporters sniffing around - all good. I have managed to get a few more prizes from Westpac, so we will be running a "raffle". When you pay your $10 you will get a raffle ticket. the raffle will be drawn at either the Greta Pub or the helipad. We have some great items. I have 25 plastic helicopter moneyboxes and it was suggested we try to attach them to our bikes - not sure how that will work though!!!!!
We will now probably arrive at the helipad (Garden City Helicopters) between 1:30pm and 2pm.
Looking forward to seeing everyone and to raising some serious money for a seriously good cause, also raising awareness of the Cheesecutters. See you all tomorrow.:woohoo:

Hey big thanks for the 23 that showed up at the peg and another 3 at the Gretta, considering the weather (and for you Auckland lot a southerly down here is a bitter cold extreamly wet wind) I honestly expected less than 10 infact closer to 5 so bloody awesoem.

Our ride went well through the Scargill vally and back to town to the hellie pad where we were showen around and as the big bid its self was under repair it was pushed out livened up... well they tried I think the spark plugs were dirty or something, but then they relised the fuel lines hadent been bleed, errrr... now a flat battery so out with the Batt Pac and brm brm... good to see the system is fail safe and relible :blank:

They have a loaner chopper at the moment as the main one is sorted and tuned up.
HOWS it going down south and up ye onner ?

A most enjoyable ride I must say.

Got about 1km from home though and the bike started running on 2 cylinders.

Turns out the fuel hose had a kink in it and it wasnt getting enough gas. Strangely enough it was the middle 2 cylinders not going, however the fuel line drops down between the 2nd and 3rd carbs and it was the 1st and 4th cylinders that were going. I dont know. Its fixed now thats all I care about.

Well the day started out cold and damp, as I was cleaning my teeth it was bucketing down - it didn't last long though. So on went all the merino underwear and then all the outer ewear. Hubby went out to start the bikes and mine was fine but his wouldn't - flat battery. So he kindly told me to take the car and he would ride my bike - what a trouper. We arrived at the Peg around 9:30am. Mikhail was the first to arrive, and then one by one more people started to arrive. I am most impressed by the turnout considering the weather. Luckily the weather did get better the further north we went. The Greta Tavern offerred us warm hospitality, good food and drink and a lovely fire. We then made our way through to scargill, waikari and the weka pass back throiugh to CHCH. The weather worsening the closer we got to CHCH. It was windy, wet and freezing. We got to the Heli pad and was able to hand over $400 - fantastic. We got to check out the helicopters and I took some great photos which I will post up.
All in all a good turnout, some good money raised and some new people met.:2thumbsup

They do do good, Me father in law was dragged out of a car wreck out castle hill some years back, when the driver of the car decied not to turn the wheel on a corner... lucky they were when the Westpac bumble bee took em to the Hospital.

Anyhow just took a few pictures, and they are in my Webshots album.

Bloody good work to those that made it out!!!!!! (water is never that bad)

I have to confess.. I was 1 of those people that looked out the window in the morning and said bugga riding in that shight..:cold: well done to the riders that did go.. just a thought.... is there a reason we couldnt do the same ride, for the same cause, on short (maybe a week (weather permiting on the day)) notice in the next week or 2 or 3 ?? Im sure there would be a great turn out going by the success storys from the ride in the rain.. Anyhoo, just a thought

Nothing stopping anyone from going for a ride with the same route, but the fundraising part is not happening till next year - hopefully in the summer and maybe for a different cause. Hopefully we will be able to co-ordinate another countrywide event in 2009.

Dangerous and I have been interviewed regarding this ride - by the Christchurch Mail. I gave them some of my photos and they have the photo taken from the motorway bridge. So keep an eye out 'cause I am sure it will be this weeks edition!!!!!

My brother keeps on harping at me "When will the Westpac ride be this year"

Anyone have any ideas so I can get him to leave me alone?
