View Full Version : The search for a replacement begins

Ok, few of you know mt SV had an apointment with the bonet of a car back before easter that it decided to keep:crybaby:, now the body is practicly healed and I have some insurance money floating around that needs to be spent on another stress relief device before somthing sensible happens to it like paying a bit off the morgage:spanking:.

So this weekend just gone I made a point of getting out of Auckland (work stresses, but thats a whole nother story) and decided to visit some of friendly bike shops in the Tauranga region with both the pearents in tow (as felow bike testers and it is always good to have someone to bounce ideas off). Now not really having any idea what type of bike I wanted to replace the SV with, from Bayride we ended up taking out three bikes for a spin over the Kaimais, the 05 Triumpth 1050 Sprint (http://www.bayride.co.nz/sep/showroom.asp), 06 Honda VFR800 (http://www.honda-motorcycles.co.nz/bikedetails.asp?BikeTypeID=4&ModelID=21&type=), and a 04 Ducati Monster 1000 (http://www.bayride.co.nz/sep/showroom.asp).

The Sprint is a great bike but fairly quikly I realised it wasent the bike for me, the main reason I took it for a spin is that it has the same engine a the Speed Triple (that DMTND sold a 6pm the night before so I couldnt test it).

The VFR was amasing and I was really suprised by how it went, great handeling and the engine really sung when it got into the VETC. In time I had it you could just tell the bike could easily eat the miles away.

The Monster I really liked and was the pick of the three for me, I loved the V Twin engine and suprisingly didnt mind the more upright naked style , loads of tourqe (sp?) and would be great fun a leagal speeds. I did feel like the suspension in the rear was a little soft and refused to follw the imputs of the front, but I am fairly confident with some changes to the settings that could be improved upon.

From Bayride we moved on to MotoGB where we took for a spin down the Welcome Bay Rd there demo K8 Hayabusa (http://www.suzuki.co.nz/motorcycles/motorcycles.html), and the demo B-King (http://www.motogb.co.nz/Details.cfm?ProdID=253&category=2), now I wanted to ride a Busa cause I thought it may have been a good replacement, and it was just a chance to see what the B-King was all about.

The Busa is a serios peice of bike, completly different to anything else I have riden, it handeled well and was rediciously fast but I found it heavy on the road and heavy in the corners and really didnt like it.

The B-King once again is stupid quick but found it a lot more enjoyable than the Busa, untill I looked at the speedo (which isint very big and almost looks like an afterthought) comming out of a few corners and realised that I was doing speeds that the police would not apreciate and when I slowed down to a speed that I might get away with for the next set they didnt seem anywhere near as much fun.

So, my testing so far has the Duc on top, but I am still not really sure what I want from a bike, and to honset I would probally be quite happy qetting another SV1000s (would probally upgrade the suspension and a few other cosmetic mods on the second one if I was to go down that track). Other bikes I have on my list to test, rightly or wrongly:

Suzuki GSXR750, K6 on
Triumph Speed Triple
Kawasaki ZX10
Suzuki TLS (be waiting the PM Morcs)
KTM Super Duke (maybe)

I am open to any other suggestions (even stupid ones, we are still on KB after all:Pokey:), and am really after a bike that can handle a bit of anything, comuting, stress relief blasts, day tours, week long tours, and maybe the ocasional track day (although that is waht I have the bucket for now:devil2:).

I will keep this thread up dated as I test a few more rides, as you were.

If you liked the Ducati, make sure you get a ride on an S4R.

What about a Kwaka Z1000 or 750? I've always liked the look and idea of them. Plenty of ponies but not as agressive as the superbikes.

Everyone recommends their bikes on threads like these so I'm gonna join in.

Suzuki Gsx1400 Does everything you itemised above and does it bloody well.

Were all biased I guess but if ya get the chance, take one for a spin, what ya got to lose. It's the most complete allround bike I've ever owned, awsome machine. :done:

You can't go wrong with a Triumph.
But then again, I would say that.

It is one I have sort of glossed over for some reason, will have to put it on the test ride list

Great all rounderit is. I test rode one when I was shoping for the SV and it didnt really press my buttons for some reason.

Nothing wrong with that, I was truly disapointed that bay ride had sold the speed tripple the night before I arrived as it is deffently one bike that I want to test ride.

Speed Triple, definitely worth a go.

If you test-ride a GSX1400, don't get on it until the suspension knobs are set correctly. PM me or beyond for further information.

Ducati Multistrada (yes, really - I suspect that you'll find it handles better than the Monsters).

GSX-R750 K6/K7. Best all-round performer out of anything mentioned in this thread so far. Also the least comfortable to ride. YMMV.

If you want to buy a rip-snortin' thou (why would you, though?) the '07 R1 is a better bike than the '06/'07 ZX10R. Dunno about the '08 Tens, though, ride one and see.

Might as well try the new Buell 1125R while you're at it. It might pleasantly surprise you.

PM sent.

And I second whoever mentioned the Z1000. My mate bear (he is the size of a bear) has a green one for a courier bike. Its just sooo nice to sit on. Havent ridden one though.

Bahahahaha! Yellow courier packrack thing goin' on?

Does he head south and get off at the Mt Wellington exit in the evenings?

If so, he doesn't much like getting passed in traffic by GSX1400s, does he?

:2thumbsup

But it doesnt look very pretty does it,

the GSXR and the ZX10 are bikes for one reason or another I want to test but to be honest I dont think I could live long term with a full on sports bike.

I thought you had just ordered some nice shiney exhuast parts for it, you must really be starting to get frustrated if you are offering to sell it:shutup:

New triple is a fantastic bike, leagues better than the older models.
Z1000 also good
Z750 was a bit of a let down to be honest - to many things feel wrong on it.
TDM is a good bike, but i think they should name it the mule, as it does everything wonderfully - but fails in the looks department.
Also the superduke is good.

The '07 R1 is way more comfortable than either.

I'm surprising myself at the moment by enjoying it far more than I expected to.

I reckon I could live with one long term. Wouldn't be my first choice for comfort or convenience, but god damn it goes and handles well, and it's comfortable enough and convenient enough to not fail on those points.

Just don't buy one if you need to take pillions. Pillion accommodation on pretty much any current sprotbike is 'emergency transport only'.

Hey Carl,

Keep in mind the price of aftermarket goodies for whichever machine you go for! Might be the deciding factor between 2 bikes....

Wouldnt be much point if you purchased a Duc and found out the pipes were x2 the price than a Suzuki's. (Dont shoot me - Just making up an fictitious example)

Aftermarket goddies hve always been a consideration, and it is one of the things that keeps me coming back to the SV, shit I looked at mine for over a year and I have pretty much figured out the way I would like to add my own personaly touches.

Go for another SV1000S mate.
Put some Yoshis on it, take the baffles out, put a better seat on it, and a tail tidy, and you have a machine that cranks with all the beaut sound in the world, reliable for a realistic price.
You know once you ride a V-twin u cant go back to anything else.

FZ1's have never really tickled my fancy, might be worth a try though.

LOL!! Sorry mate but my boss pays me to sell bikes for him and I happen to be pretty good at it...sorry!!
You'll be happy to know that I'll be taking delivery of a new Speed Triple sooner than later
BTW....ya blonde! I have a new TDM900 on the showroom floor and did have we you and the family visited us.

There are many awesome bikes out there but it's just a matter of you trialling them and and seeing what fits your needs mate. Rest assured that I'll give you a 100% straight up opinion as I think you may have already found out.

Shit who would of thought all those bikes are there to be sold, not just for tyre kickers like me to take for a spin over the kaimais and back:innocent:

To be honest I was blinded by options when I walked in last weekend, but now that I am actually getting on and riding bikes I am starting to get a bit more of a feel what direction I want to head in.

I'd go for the VFR800. Planning on that for the next bike anyways.

They handle anything, commuting, blats, tours....:)

Well the search continues, had a free hour or so on Saturday and Rocked in to Holeshots (great service in ther by the way:2thumbsup)triple for a spin as I thought they had a demo in there however I was sadly mistaken. Not was all lost as the salesman very quickly handed over the Keys to the Street Triple demo they have.

Now I didnt really know what to expect but I tell you what I was shocked. For a small bike it got up and went right from the get go, the riding position was very comfy, and handled suprisingly well. I did find the suspension was lacking (rear could do with a least more preload, as that was the only adjustment it had), and this was about the only thing that stopped me handing over the cash right there and then.

Now I have some serious thinking to do. And find a demo Speed Triple, I really need to test one.
