Be careful if you decide to head up Dyers Pass Road these days. Someone has found it necessary to throw a lot of little rocks on the road - feels a bit like riding on marbles.

Not that grit on the Port Hills should surprise anyone this time of year - however, I didn't expect it to reach all the way down to the city limit at Cashmere. With the low winter sun and the tree just coming out of the city it's not easy to spot either... had a bit of a nasty wiggle in the first corner and then decided to keep to the wheel tracks left by the cars.

It's still very pretty up there - but keep your eyes peeled and take care.

Chubby! Mikkel!

You must both be related, I mean with the 7 people who live in Christchurch mostly being interbred...

I wish I could call myself local - but that's hardly the case.

I've met people who've lived for over 10 years in Chch but they can't consider themselves local yet - old boys network and all...

OH MBB.. in a large way you are right. Chch people look after each other like brothers and sisters and common curtesy abounds. Please don't confuse this with the North Shores version of brotherly love.... you leather chap wearing wag. ;)

They gritted the road first on Friday night because it was snowing then on Monday and Tuesday nights for the frost.

Its getting better now (Thursday) but the road is now very dirty and there is still quite a bit of gravel on it in places.

I commute over this road every day in a 4wd, it can be a dangerous road when cold.

Not a bad commute by any standard :niceone:

But I suspect my favorite commuting route is then closed until summer comes around again. (Up along the Summit road to Dyers Pass and then down that way.)

Does anybody know of any good roads for sub-100kph riding in CHCH that aren't all gravelled up yet?

I've been bedridden with severe tonsillitis for the last week, coincidentally that's covered all the best riding weather aswell!

Palpable rage...

well just like the big exhaust lets people know I've arrived, so my attire reinforces the fact that I'm here.

I know many fatboys go for tassells, I thought frills would be a nice point of difference. :Punk:

I just went up over and down the other side, there is a bit around coming up to the sign of the kiwi not much coming down dyers to governors side.

Sticking to used wheel tracks will see ya right, on another note. Brr bit of a chilly day for a jaunt to the hilltop tavern and back, good times though! :2thumbsup

Problem is just that it's very hard to spot - at least in the shadows and especially if you're riding through an area with changing lighting conditions.

Going uphill it's nasty - but going downhill not seeing a patch of grit is downright deadly.

Can imagine it would have been a cold treat! Will get worse when the southerly comes through properly :(
