View Full Version : The nod. Or wave.

Howdy all,
This discussion rages on the main bike threads... However I have noticed that there seems to be very little love between scooter riders. I always give a nod to anyone who rides anything but very seldom do I get anything in return. I say we start right now. Nod, Wave, Do a dance... whatever you like but there should be some love between the scooterisers out there.
Or perhaps I am mistaken and there is no love for your scoot and it is purely financial and convenience that posesses one to ride one. Not so in my case but perhaps I'm unusual...
and just for your amusement

Little/normal sized scooters rarely wave or return a wave. However Burgman/CH250 or similar riders often wave of their own accord.
I suppose because small scooters are often owned by car drivers who want a break on the fuel and parking costs, whereas owners of the big Burgmans etc. are often bikers or ride their scooter for the hell of it.
Same reason Lambretta owners wave or acknowledge you.

Pretty sure I posted in the scooter section... asking about scooter riders... perhaps I am mistaken... no, no mistake.
I am a motorcyle rider also, just currently sans bike. Have you ridden a decent scooter recently? if not perhaps you should try one out...

Would have to agree here!
Most scoots don't acknowlege other scoots. Me I wave to everyone regardless of bike they are on. Most will reply - even sports bikers. But then again my scoot looks like a "normal" bike from the front and they most probably don't realise its a sccot, wave and then they are gone before thay have realised I'm a scoot.
Everyone knows Burger drivers are cool - just ask one!:wari:

Sorry you said you wave to all bike riders, and don't get much in return. My suggestion was merely to get a bike and then you'll get acknowlegement.
I don't want to ride a scooter.

That guy in Warlock's vid needs to talk less and concentrate more on the road IMHO!! holy!!
I'll wave to a scooter if I see it out on the open road where they are obviously not commuting.... like riding over the Rimatakas... always funny to see them up there!!

Yes - I wave when on the open road or out for a bit of two-smoker screaming, but if I'm on my daily commute I'm too busy watching out for fuckwits to concentrate on etiquette

I ride a mean old 50cc (saving for a bike, seriously, I promise) and when I'm not looking out for those good folk who choose not to indicate I'll give out a nod to other scooterists.
That said, I'd nod to bikers if it weren't for the strange stares I'd get. My only rule is if the other scooterist in question is wearing t-shirt/shorts/jandals/soup bowl, nods will only happen in return; never initiated - I just can't bring myself to otherwise.

Yeah fair enough, there is enough to worry about in regard to not dieing I just thought it odd that there isn't much camraderie amongst the scoots out there in general... But yeah you are right mainly in the city rather than on the open road
As for out on the real roads... been way too long actually, might have to take the little guy for a thrash to Miranda on the weekend... ah good times... except when you get passed going through the twisties, uphill.... by a guy on a dirtbike.. haha that was pretty awesome/embarassing :crybaby:

Not to worry -- happens to guys on big sportsbikes all the time -- they won't admit it, though. Dirtbikes obey a different set of physics laws to the rest of us.

Same for me although I still wave at scooters wearing full face helmets and what looks like riding gear. I don't expect skirts and hoodies to wave back.
As an aside in Wellywood there was heaps more waving/nodding than I see here in the Manawatu. Might be partly cos I no longer ride to work every day. Still a bit of a downer when your friendly gesture flops.

A lot of people with scooters have real bikes too.. just use the scooter for the commute to work, so their bikes don't get shagged up commuting.
As a rule of thumb, I'd never nod or wave at someone in a piss pot. Whether they're on a scooter/moped/big munter twin. But then, I wouldn't wave at people on little mopeds or coops on principle.

Anyone in Christchurch can probably recognise me as the scooterist in the rather bulky mugello armour and inappropriately sporty designed full face helmet.
What I really dislike about scooter riders with no gear at all is their self righteous attitude. I'm 7th form at high school, and I think I'm the only one, scooter or motorbike, who wears any gear above helmet. This wouldn't normally bother me (it's their skin) but it creates this whole attitude where you're suddenly a wuss for liking skin. I've gotten shit from people who don't ride anything at all even, because gear is equivalent to paranoia. But whatever. At least I'm warm lol.
And, to stay on topic, that's why I don't nod at people without gear.
A motorcycle cop gave me a friendly wave last Saturday on the Northern Motorway :)
I'm assuming that it was friendly as I didn't get pulled over...
And while I'm on the subject, WTF is with those little half face helmets scooter riders a wearing??
So they protect their brain, but look fuc*ing ugly after the crash.

I picked up a scooter-riding (shiny black Piaggio or somesuch) guy one morning a few years ago, after a dork driving a car with fogged-up windows didn't stop at a stop sign, and took the scooterist out. He was OH SO Kewl, in his black jeans, no glubs, black denim jacket (undone), shades, and leather jandals. Not so kewl were his sore feet and knees, and dinner-plate sized rash on his back, after he went "Plop!" on the unforgivingly hard tarmac.
I felt like a plonker in full leathers etc., but....
Oh - he was also wearing a "little half face helmets" (black, natch!)
The scooterists who wear these (and little in the way of protection) do so because they are treating the scooter as a glorified pushbike, ergo, very little in the way of safety gear is required, or it nullifies the whole, "Hop on, twist the grip and go" freedom of scootering.
The next time I saw ScooterDude, he was wearing pretty much the same gear - hadn't learned anything from his encounter...

I wave at everything on two wheels while I'm commuting (including push bikes!) - if the traffic conditions allow it. Unfortunately I'm usually operating the clutch, brake, throttle and steering all at once when in traffic so the other riders often just get a last minute nod that they don't have time to respond to.

.
This is because, in fact, the standard 50cc scooter is a glorified pushbike.
I go faster on my pushbike - should I be wearing race leathers?

Depends on the scooter, but sure a 50cc may appear to be a glorified push bike but they tend to go at the 50ish speed most of the time hence longer time exposed to danger. On my 125 I spend most of my time closer to 70/80 (closed roads obviously) and it will do 100 no worries... then you get into things like the GP800.... anyway I percieve you are talking about 50cc machines/mopeds rather than scooters in general
Anyway that is why when reviewing any bike we tend to always wear full gear and full face helmets when possible... has annoyed some potential advertisers but oh well. Do as we say and what we do seems to be a good message when in a position that could have some sway over others...

Well I have been nodding or waving to all scooters and most bigger bikes I see on my travels to and from work and around town, but have not detected even the most cursory glance... it seems most scooter riders are in a "look straight ahead ignore all else" kind of bubble... or something... nodding or waving appears pointless..
The only response so far was another bike rider on a large cruiser-type bike filtering up behind then beside me at a traffic queue who said "Well done" and then we blasted off as the light turned green.
It appears that there is little camaraderie between bikers that don't know one another... It seems I will have to join a club.

Don't read to much into it....
Most Scooter riders of late are not motorcyclist by choice, they are kinda "economic refugees"
They only ride a scooter because it makes economic sense....They don't feel part of "the Brotherhood" Just like catching a ride on the ferry doesn't make you a sailor....:scooter:

Plenty of camaraderie between bikers unknown to each other. Most bikers waving out to other bikers don't know who they're waving to ;)
I usually nod to scooterists in town and wave on expressways etc. They fail to notice 99% of the time. Most are just saving gas - victims of economics as awayatc suggested.

The expessways here are only 80 zones. If the riders are struggleing to control the small wheels at 100km/h something is wrong with the bike. Should be stable as. The frequently offered excuse for why Harley riders seldom wave due to excessive vibrations is just a myth, lol.
