I'm new to riding so have been looking for some hints, tips, advice, stories even of other new riders to see if they felt the same as me ie: more scared than I thought I would be and how they overcame that fear/anxiety. Have been lurking around a number of sites but found KB to have exactly what I needed, (thats the thanks part) encouraging threads of people who felt exactly as I did and how they conquered it. Although I'm not a kiwi, does that fact that I have several really good friends who are kiwi's count in anyway??? just hope it might. I was actually planning a trip to NZ this year but bought a bike instead so the trip to NZ is slated for next year after pay bonus comes through.

So please if you have any advice or hints etc or just some encouraging words that would be great.

and as you can tell I luv talking and can be quite chatty...just tell me to shutup if its too much.

thanks
Michelle

Welcome to 'ya! Just take it easy for a while, slow and carefull. Be visable, helps to move your head laterally- drivers will notice the movement! Keep the bike maintained!- relax and enjoy. Happy times!!!

Well I'm not a kiwi and they haven't chucked me off the forums yet. I've been here 2 years now and not received that much abuse.

I've heard that Australia is just like a big flat red billiard table with a rock in the middle and lots of straight roads without speed limits on them. Where's the fun in riding a bike through that? Of course you can't stop otherwise all the poisonous snakes, spiders, stonefish and blue ringed octopi will kill you (unless the saltwater crocodiles get to you first).

I've never been to Australia.....can you tell?

Well if they'll put up with you then i'm sure they'll put up with me. you know what they say only believe about 10% of what you hear, we do have a big red rock in the middle of Oz and we do have all the poisnonous wildlife you mentioned but we also have some of the twistiest, curviest, bendiest roads you could imagine, we have ocean roads that lazily follow the coast, we have alpine roads that traverse the mountains and good plain old fashioned bendy roads. Yes there are a lot of flat long stretches but you avoid them like the plague and its sweet. I know someone who loves taking his italian mistress over those curves and bends - always comes home with the biggest smile on his face - so don't believe all you heard.

thanks for the welcome just the same.

Michelle

Sels1 thanks for the links I think they will help. To Motodrummer and fatzx10R I think you both gave some good advice. Its not so much the higher speeds that make me anxious its negotiating those slow speeds, the roundabouts etc that I tend to get anxious about. My husband said much the same as what you have all said, just relax, dont' ride above your ability and take little rides till you build up some time under the helmet, you;ll find it does come naturally. so thats what I'm looking for - the naturallness. In reality I've probably ridden on the roads for a total of about 4 hrs total so maybe I am judging 'the riding experience' a little harshly. I did find that the last couple of times I got on the bike (and my last ride was about 80k's through all sorts of traffice, and a national park, so some twisties) that the things I was struggling with initially did come easier, and I was able to concentrate on other abilities that I need to hone. I'm also at the stage where I am keen to get out on the bike again but haven't had the opportunity to do so. Thats a good sign right?

anyway tnx to all of you for your welcome and I am keen to read other peoples journeys, and was I right when I said I tend to talk a lot????

:2thumbsup

I'm a sports tart, whoever wins thats the side im on. Actually about the only sport i do follow and even then sporadically is motorsport. so not really sure what you are even talking about???? but for your sake I hope whoever you suppport wins because it doesn't matter to me.

How are you enjoying the Scorpio? I'm mentoring a workmate who bought one a few months ago and is enjoying it immensly.

Thanks for the welcome.

Seems the only problem I am having with the Scorpio is that i'm not on it enough. Having only had experience as a pillion on bikes before I don't really have anything to benchmark it with however so far I have found it easy to ride, gears don't give me any grief, all importantly stops well, nice and steady, and above all looks really really cool when I'm riding it. :2thumbsup

I am waiting for some ventura racks so I can put the top box on and once I do that I will use it for commuting to work when I don't have to drop off the 7yr old. All up I would vote it :first:

ciao for now

Lets face it you travel you come home its done, you buy a bike you ride it you come home you go out again you come home you go out again...you get my drift, the pleasure goes on far longer than a holiday I reckon.

Keeping visible seems to be the biggest thread I have heard, so am putting that one into practice, move through the drivers rear vision mirror, move through the lane, dont' sneak up on them and turn the head regularly to both see whats going on and the movement catches the eye of the 4 wheelers. As for servicing thats also another big theme, keep it serviced it will give you very little trouble, I suppose thats really like anything in life, look after it and it lasts.

thanks again
Michelle

Sometimes life gets in the road of what you really want to do. Thats what it has felt like during the week because of work and family comitments haven't had time to ride so I was up earlish on sat morning and went for a short blat, just locally around where I live - rode to work, rode to the gym etc just to get a feel for the bike. Did the same this morning and travelled further and actually went on main roads with other people on them, and found that I like it. I also realised as I was riding along some of the tips that have been passed on like, move within your lane and keep in the drivers view were playing in my head. Also the big one RELAX so am definitely feeling like i'm starting to own this riding thing. Will order my racks then I can use the bike for work when I don't have mummy duty (which is not that often but there is always the school holidays:woohoo::woohoo:). I'm actually getting to the stage where I am looking forward to going on the bike. I tend to only go on the weekends at the moment but once I have the rack it will be ridden a lot more.

thanks for listening

No don't worry I'm a bigger man then that.Anyway if I got pissed off every time Oz beat us in some sport or other I'd spend my life as a bitter, twisted person.
So welcome and the more time you spend on two wheels the more time you want to spend on two wheels.

Sounds like you're progressing well. Just ride like all the other road users are out to get you and you'll be alright. (I don't mean crawl along in the gutter, I just mean don't trust them. They do dumb shit some times)
