View Full Version : Ninja 650r/ER6F Micron can - still too loud even with baffle, what are my options?

Okay so I've got this Micron can on my ER6F and it absolutely sounds tits. I love it, but even with the baffle in, it is really, really loud. Are there any places that can quieten it up a bit more? Just to make it more neighbourhood friendly? I don't want to go back to stock after taking it off because that is one HUGE MOTHER of an exhaust. Seriously, it has a handle on it and you really can use it as weightlifts.

So yeah, anyone have any options as to how to make it a little quieter? Are there custom exhaust places that can have a play with my baffle? Honestly the only difference between the debaffled sound is that it is a lower roar, it's only fractionally louder.

Cheers!

lol!
Well It's not too loud for ME, but I am very conservative around my neighbourhood, I live next to older folk and the last thing they need is even more noise from my house. I would just like to get it to an appropriate tone.

I mean, after all, if I want to have a 'play' I can take the baffles out and sound like yours :P

I can't hear it cruising, but it idles quite loud and when I bring the revs up it kinda gets intrusive.. I recorded a video log with it on and while it sounds fucking amazing in the video it is about 3 - 4 times louder in real life, with the same sound.

When I upload the vid I'll paste it here to show you what it sounds like (if you can manage to look past my talking shit).

Microns can apparently be taken apart and repacked (usually by drilling out the rivets in the end cap or whatever). If you do so, and stick more stainless steel or fibreglass or whatever it has in it, it should quieten it somewhat.

You could try one of these !! (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MOTORCYCLE-EXHAUST-BAFFLE-KIT-NOISE-REDUCTION-db-KILLER_W0QQitemZ310046915102QQihZ021QQcategoryZ256 23QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

So.. conversely, I could take some out??? :blip:

vifferman: Cheers for that, I know there is a guy on the shore I think, who made a cruiser mates exhausts quieten quite a bit, so I'm assuming I can take the baffle to him and he'll be able to do all the fancy stuff to it?

Mort: They look good but I'm not keen on drilling a hole into the tip of my exhaust :(

It blows out or degrades with time anyway, but yes, you could take it out. Many/most/some slip-ons (apart from Satantunes) require repacking every so often, or they get louder and more resonant.

How hard is it to repack/pack the baffle up more, that is in there already? Is it a job I could do by myself?

Yes, assuming it's either held together with rivets (and you have or can borrow a rivet gun, and can get the right rivets) or bolted together.
All you need to do, is take the end cap off, pull the perforated core out, and wrap it with more s/steel wool or fibreglass matting, and - if necessary - wire the packing loosely in place. Then you slip the core back in, and refasten the end cap.
But... instead of asking me, you could Google it.
Here's the first hit "repack muffler (http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/howto/122_0309_howto/index.html)" turned up.
EDIT:
Your muffler sounds pretty quiet to me - like a quiet lawnmower.
EDIT 2:
That wasn't a proper stop at the stop sign. :nono:

Haha, thanks for the help mate.

On video it sounds bloody fantastic, that's what I want it to sound like in real life. My camera has sound stabilisation so it keeps audio levels even, it's at most 3 - 4 times louder to the naked ear.

Went for another ride tonight and it is waaayyyyy too loud for suburban areas, I feel so bad for people I'm riding past. If I can't find a cheap way to silence it significantly i'm going to have to sell it I think :( I'm not a 'check out my loud bike' kind of guy, I just wanted a nice small roar :(

Hey bro, can you bring your bike around to the Uni spanner day or at least when we have our Friday drinks?

As we love to hear it!

We got stuff going on every week and just check under the clubs section, we're under as 'Uni Motorcycle Club'. And luck you, we've got a Biker party going on this Saturday in Botany Downs and you're welcome to come along.

On the other note of making it quieter, Warren from Virgin Mufflers (he lives out in Avondale/Glen Eden) has done a bit of work on my muffler and heaps my mate's ones and I highly recommend him and so do other KB members.

That might actually be the place I'm thinking of, Virgin Mufflers. I'll definitely look him up mate, thanks a lot!!

I think I may have blown this out of proportion, Mav had a brain fart and said "I wonder if I can fit 2 microns to my bike" and I'm saying "I want it quieter" so I think I'm just a quiet exhaust person by nature, I can't imagine this pipe being any louder than Leo Vince, Scorpion etc but PM me and I'll see if I can make it :P
