So I was riding home last night & me hornet decided not to play the game & cut out??? All the lights still on, just the engine went dead So got it home after some nice person picked me up (thanks mate) tried it on the starter fired up first time. So I did a few simple checks but can't find much. Got a funny feeling its a cdi. Anybody got any bright ideas?? is a 96 250cc

Cheers

Have a quick look at all the plugs/wires for any obvious signs of damage/probs.

If there is nothing obvious get a hold of a manual and work logically around the engine supply system.

Faults like this can be a bugger to find.

Good luck.

Do you have a big buch of keys that hang from the ignition switch? If so it may be the weight of them turned your ignition off.

My zxr250 use to do that periodically on the motorway. It would start to lose power (like losing ignition in 1 or two the cylinders) and then cut out all together. When it did cut out, it would usually happen after crusing between 100 and 120km/h. After a weekend of not riding i couldn't get it to start. It turns out that there was no spark. I had a look at the coils and regulator/rectifier and it looked as though the regulator has blown. There were black marks and melted plastic on the connection terminal. I am not 100 percent sure what's wrong with it but i suspect it to be the regulator. Im just waiting on a replacement part. fingers crossed that it will fix it.

I just have the ignition key & thats all on my bike. I have heard some horror story about keys falling out of ignitions.
I've had the regulater off & it looks ok & checked the charge rate 14v-ish.

righto so an up date, got my bike going tonight run it up to temp with the orignal cdi. Checked the charge rate 13.8v at 9000rpm. So I shove my 2nd hand unit from a cbr250 in my pocket & off I go to make it cut out, sure enough it dies rather quickly (3km) fit cbr unit fires up first pop woo hoo. Ride up road for a bit notice it missfires slightly abouve 6000rpm grrrr:angry: bit pissed off but at least I now know its a cdi & nothing else is messing with the bike. Just gotta get the right cdi for it......might be easier to find chickens teeth
