According to the bike shop where the slightly mangled remains lie, it is likely that the TRX is dead.

Long live the TRX.

I have been casting about for replacement ideas within my budget ($6500-$7500), and given that I am a cash purchaser I will be "negotiating".

I wanted some ideas from you fellas. The TRX is/was very adaptable but I am starting to pay the price for numerous youthful accidents involving sports, girls, drunken binges, car accidents and motorcycle accidents. Therefore I am after something that doesn't punish the knees too badly.

I've found two bikes that I'm very interested in.

1. 98 Honda Hornet 600, 4800kms, $6495
2. 94 Yamaha YZF750R, 12,500kms, $6995.

Any other suggestions/advice gladly accepted. Please bear in mind that I will probably just ignore all advice and buy the shiniest/fastest/best handling bike within my budget anyway.

Makes sure the bike shop low balls the wreck when the insurance company asks for a value, then buy it back and make a streetfighter...

Then buy another bike... One bike good... Two bikes better.

Or you could tell 'Kerryg' I'm sure he'd be up for YET ANOTHER bike to play round with.

Everyone keeps saying that, and it's a nice idea, but I just don't have the time or motivation to head down that route. The frame on the TRX would need to be straightened and if that doesn't work out then you are left with what you started out with - a wreck.

I vote Hornet.

Yeah... I guess you're right... I came to the same conclusion when my ZXR was written off... But that was coz my engine had high Ks on it, I would have done it otherwise...

$450 to straighten the frame... If the forks and brakes etc aren't faffed you could have a fighter pretty cheaply... I didn't have it in me to do any work on the ZXR so I talked to Twincam in Paraparam, they offered to do mine up for $1200... incl Frame, forks, risers, bars, clocks and lights + tail reshape etc.

(Bearing in mind my frame was fecked and the forks totally shot, clocks & lights mashed, radiator squashed, seat unit fairing etc gone, it wasn't too bad as it included fixing all that)

If you can get your bike back for under 1k - add in around 1k to fix it you've got a pretty good second bike for ~2k all up...

In hidsight I should have done it... but that's easy to say now... Have a chat to Randall at Twincam in pram.

Cheers,

Sedge.

PS. Guess what I just bought ? Yup, a streetfighter 91 ZXR750... gets delivered Jan 5th :)

Both nice bikes at good prices, low mileages too.

A colleague has a nice XJR1300 he brought over from the UK that he'll be happy to sell to me next year for around 8K, and I'll be having my eye out for one of those diverted-from-Kazakhstan B12's going from the Suzuki dealers right now once they start hitting TradeMe.

If you can hang out a couple of months (and the withdrawls aren't too bad) the wait till after "summer", prices come down as does demand, so good deals are to be had.

On Trade Me alone cbr250rr/zxr250 that were selling for about the $3k mark over winter are getting over $4k atm (even in this weather, go figure). So bikes that are going for about $8-~10k could well be within you price range if you hold out.

Of course if you sold a kidney and had an extra 1k to play with you could get spuds baby which is already at winter prices.

Early 17th century. From Latin sesquipedalis “measuring one and one-half feet,” from the stem ped- “foot.”

I was looking for a 7-footed duck picture, but I suppose I'll settle for 1.5 feet....
I'll buy a beer if you can find a good picture of either...

and further :offtopic:, what does the sesqui- part deal with, given the collection of words here (http://www.kokogiak.com/logolepsy/ow_s.html#sesquialteral) ? It seems to be 1.5, but where's the 1.5 in the latter few???

It isn't actually:

sesquipedalian \ses-kwi-pi-DAYL-yun\, adjective:
1. Given to the overuse of long words; "sesquipedalian orators"
2. (Of words) long and ponderous; having many syllables; as, "sesquipedalian technical terms"
--sesquipedalian, noun:
A very long word (a foot and a half long)

The verses of Stephen Hawes are as full of barbarous sesquipedalian Latinisms, as the prose of the Rambler.

A set of sesquipedalian exclamations.

Actually, you're both right.

This is of course, due to that interesting little habit of English to borrow words from others languages and imply their own perverted meaning to it:

from Dictionary.com:

Sesquipedalian comes from Latin sesquipedalis, a foot and a half long, hence inordinately (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=inordinately) long, from sesqui, one half more, half as much again + pes, ped-, a foot.

Not bad actually thanks, it's a bit of a shock being back in Auckland after living with only 1 other person on an island for most of a month (apart from 2 trips into Fitzroy (shop + wharf, and NOTHING else, literally..)) I was getting to enjoy being out in a very low stress, easy-paced environment....The only downside was the island politics - there's some real characters out there on the barrier....

Sorry to hear 'bout the TRX - diesel is pretty slippery stuff - apparently a good insect repellant though...(tip from the ferry crew - if you are on a boat, sleep close to the engine...)

I wouldn't go near the XJR1200 (although it's a sexy looking machine). The reviews I've read have been terrible and a guy in work with me has just bought a spanking new one and thoroughly regrets it. Here's some of the words and phrases he used this morning when I asked him what he thought of it:

Boring
Over priced
Wobbles at speed
Crap Ohlms suspension (non adjustable-Yam own Ohlms)
Far too heavy

I must say pretty much everyone in our family likes riding out 600 bandit, father in law with his $25,000 bmw k1200rs, my wife(vtr1000f), her sister(vn1500), one reason i brought a 600, was the amount of fun that 600 is, we have the last old of the older style(half fairing). Plus the fuel tank rubs on the front frame member and ruptures requiring either repeated repairs or modification to the front mounting point, the carbed versions spit back if they are set up exactly right, and fairing panels detach due to cracked mounting holes. Plus, they are old. The 750 Paso is the ugly sister of the family, and the 900SS is nice but waaaay too many Ks.

I keep saying that my budget is fixed at $6.5k to $7.5k. If I can get the CBR going reasonable cheaply I might be able to stretch the budget to $8.5k if I can sell it. I can't justify spending any more as I have a mortgage, I have to by a "new" car this year, and I have to start house extensions. It's all very well to suggest stretching it a bit, but I just can't. I'm not willing to spend my entire budget on a Ducati over a decade old, especially when that is within the period that Ducati's quality was at best questionable. I want to have a fun reliable toy that I can go on my once a month ride without having to wonder what is going to break next. This isn't a slur on Ducati at all, but you have to remember (as F5Dave said) that prior to TPG's investment, Ducati was not in a good financial or engineering state.

I don't remember saying that, but I will now for the sake of um, something.
