View Full Version : How the hell do you cope without a garage!

Me and koba live in a 1 bedroom flat. Its not small but its not huge. I dont have a garage but I have a shed where the buckets live along with fuel cans and race stands. However the house has become a "kind-of garage". In one corner of the lounge I have a set of tyres and a rear tyre and rim in the other corner is a couple of boxes filled with painting equipment, oil, gear fluid, CRC and other cans and bottles. One of my TV cabit shelves is filled with a battery, spark plugs, sprockets and other assorted 'smaller' bike parts and one of the cupboards is deciated to random tools, chains and other parts. There is also currently a fly wheel puller thingymabob next to the stereo.
In the bedroom there is another tyre and on the shelve is where the helmets, tank bags and A100 side covers and other cosmetics. Dont get me started in the bloody wardrobe as between us we have 4 sets of leathers and codura's and a race suit!
It makes cleaning a friggin nightmare. It took me 3 bloody hours to clean a 1 bedroom flat! Its ridiculous, I think we need a new flat with a garage, especially as at the moment we have 9 bikes between us!!! No wonder I am an alcoholic. I want my house back!

Rant over.

Sounds like it is time to find a new place where you and all your bikes and their bits and bobs can fit happily.

Otherwise just top up that drink o yours and carry on as you are....

It doesn't matter, I have a huge garage and there is still junk everywhere, garages are NEVER big enough.

Have you got room on the lawn where you could put an old lock up container for bikes and bits..if not, what about one of those aluminium sheds that you can get from Mitre 10 or The Warehouse.
You can get heaps of stuff in those sheds and they are reasonably weatherproof.

When you hear Malcolms racebike, not the RG but the "Mutt" you will! Its fucken loud, single cylinder 650 in a NSR frame and probably vibrates more than your trac..., oh I mean Buell. :)

True that! We have a double garage and while there are only 6 bikes in there...guess where the car spends all it's time...

Unfortunately not really. I live in a block of 6 flats and have already taken over one of the sheds and permanently got a broken down A100 parked up as well. We are looking for a new flat but there isnt much around in our price range witha garage :(

I know the feeling. Our spare bedroom is pretty much dedicated to bike gear. The bikes live outside under waterproof covers, but it won't be long until they go away to a friends shed for the winter :weep:
People are coming over tonight and I cant decide whether to just close the spare room or padlock it as well.

In answer to the topic of the thread... I couldn't cope without the double garage. We only keep the two bikes in the garage, plus all sorts of assorted stuff. If you've seen photos of Hiroshima right after the bomb went off, that's about how our garage looks at the moment. I know of one winter job coming up

I'll keep my eyes open for a place with garage in Newlands for ya. You know you want to move closer to me and Nige, and be a Newlands Elite, Malcolm just needs a little "convincing" that's all!!:wari:

I would love to but Malcolm works in Upper Hutt and I work in town so Lower Hutt/ Petone area is our compromise!

sounds a great idea - have done it myself but they are not ventilated very well and everything will sweat inside a container

will **** your alloy cost me a fortune as I ended up having to take all the alloy parts off the bike and get them chromed

"Junk" (whatever that is) will expand to fill any space provided for it.
A commonly known law of gargre's and sheds.

OI !:Oi:. You've been talking to Mrs Ixion, haven't you? . It's *not* junk. It is all VERY USEFUL VALUABLE stuff. Yes, even the stuff that I don't know what it is.

A very simple solution would be like this .....
Humans move into the small shed to sleep and (Ahemm) whatever you do with a "nice arse" .
And bikes and tools and stuff move into the flat so as the natural spreading out method can be applied without cramping progress.

Only hassle i can see is you have to leave a narrow track between what is now the garage door and the dunny . Otherwise i can see no problems adapting.

Like parkinson's law, where a project will expand to the time alloted for it, garages do the same.

I have a reasonable garage, it's full (the POS company cage sits outside, at least for another 3 weeks until my garden leave finishes...). Garages are not for cars, they're for storage of my precccciooooooooooussssssssss.

I also have space in another garage, but it's not actually a garage, it's like the ultimate bloke space with every tool that could ever be useful. It's also very safe, what with the nice little doggie, and the even nicer gentleman who lives there with his shotgun collection. But, that's out of space as well.

I'm rennovating the loveshack, and as soon as my house is nicely finished, the gixer will be living inside where it's nice and warm, resting apon nice polished floors. Bliss.

So, in answer to your question, I can live without air, world peace, and with Uncle Helen (fucktard), but I couldn't live without bike storage.

There are two constants in the universe, 1 you can't travel faster than the speed of light, 2 you will never have enough garage space.

I have garaging for 4 vehicles and its not enough. The 2 outside are for vehicle storage. The inside 2 are my workshop. The wifes 4wd and the company car live outside.

When we looked out houses I just wanted a double garage and room to get my truck in the driveway.

We came to look at this place with the agent, I went into the garage and said "yeah this will do".
The agent asked "dont you want to look upstairs?"
I wasnt really bothered as I figured it would have a roof, rooms, toilet etc, the wife on the other hand thought it was important so I did go up and have a quick look. Then went back down to see if I could fit everything in.

Fucken pain getting stuff up the stairs!

Yeah, it is an upstairs flat which is a real pain, esp when we had to have the pitbike in the lounge!
We even tried to get the h100 up the stairs but couldn't get it around the first landing...
