Me and Maria cleaned the 10km ok, but need to pick up the pace for the next one on the 8th Aug.
1.12.02 for Maria
46.48 for me.

Well done Dave! You've got to be happy with that time, thats quick. Your words about pain being weakness leaving the body were helpful... lots of weakness left my body.

Nice time for the ten k slydesigns, well done to Maria too. Paul in NZ, well done to you and Vicki as well. Good effort Jase and bungbung i know how that downhill feeling goes... you should still be proud of yourself.

My official net time was 4:33:47
Tough day for me! Really good weather for it, concrete skys with light breeze... we were lucky not to have the stiff southerly that arrived later in the day. I was fine fitness wise but the hard surface really hurt, i've not run on tarmac for so long before. By 28km i was in pain from the impact.... cramps focusing around the hip joint and buttock area. Around 30k in a was almost forced to walk, ouchies!
Had heaps of support from friends and family which was a huge boost. Thank you!
Finish time was slower than i'd hoped for but still stoked.

Attached is the fathom from my GPS. Ignore the heart rate data, chest strap was on the blink, reading really high so i discarded it. You can see the speed drop off around 22k and again a bit further on. Ran with the guy in the dog suit until the halfway hill in seatoun (wasn't expecting that hill!!!) where he dropped me. Got the learn from some old guys in the final ten k... they were working hard and were mentally strong. There were a few people out there not eating and drinking enough who ended up in a bit of trouble / pain. Had gas for a fast(ish) final half k. The silly jump i did for the kendog's camera at the 39k mark was a mistake.... waste of energy, at least the photo is awesome. Timmay!!!

Thank you to all the people that have helped me get this far, i could not have done so well without your support.

Cheers,
Allan.

yeah it was a bit of worry, no idea where the energy came from for that display, landed ok but prolly looked unco as... was trying to minimise the impact. :pinch: Thanks Kendog for the photo!!

An impressive leap in the air considering how many k had been run and still a few left to go.

Congrats Allan. 4:31 is a bloody good time for 42kms.

In the euphoria of the moment, I made a mistake in my post (just corrected). I actually ran a 1:28:41 (not 1:38:43). Came in 80th (68th based on net time).... so I ran below 1 hour 30 mins which was my goal.

Photos are now posted on the official marathon-photos.com site.

Cheers,

:D

I ran a negative split. 46:10 at the halfway and 42:31 on the return (approx 4 min / 2 sec kms). I don't know in hindsight how I ran 10.55kms at 4.02 pace. I've never done that in training. Just goes to show what race conditions can do to the mind. I just remembered saying to myself - you didn't train to fail, now HTFU and do it.

No wonder top athletes blow away their PBs at world champs / olympics etc...

My legs are hurting from just reading this thread. Well done guys.

I only took up running late 2006 (never having been a runner in my life and usually coming last at sports days at school).

I'd highly recommend people give it a go. Choose an event (like a round the bays 7-8km or 10km run) and setup a 2 month schedule to train for it and do it. The feeling you get at the end is amazing, confidence building not to mention you can keep up with the kids for a family friendly game of sport in the weekend. After that, you can decide whether running is for you. Even if not, you have that accomplishment and some base fitness to get back into your sport of choice.

The bridge when I did the Auckland half a couple of years ago was a fantastic experience. I got a real buzz running up and over. Just to see all these other people, even the sound of the footsteps changed. The adrenalin carries you through

Key thing to training is to do some hillwork, then the bridge is just another "hill" plus you just slow it down a little. Key thing is not to burn the first 50 metres up a hill. Many people go out too hard to start. I'm an ease into it runner and build up. Less chance of injuring the creaky old bones (even if you have warmed up). The body takes a little more warm up at the early stages of a run than it used to.

I've been a little slack since the Wellington 1/2 in June last year. I've kept running each week, but without a goal, your schedule isn't really a schedule anymore.

Good thing is I get the guilts when I haven't been for a run for a few days. Keeps me honest.

Doing the round the bays for a bit of fun this weekend. I'd like to do a sub 29 min so we'll see how that goes. My company puts on a tent, massages and free food, so that might be another reason to go to

26m51s. 71st overall. Even made it in the picture in the dom post on page 4 (bearded weirdo bottom right corner). Training was a bit random so used the "guts it out on the day" technique. Luckily no injuries.

The Wellington round the bays. Re shins and knees. I don't know if you have past injuries etc... but assuming your shoes fit you well (and by that I mean you go to Shoe Clinic or Athletes foot and get a shoe to support your strike pattern), then just build up distances. I find I don't get sore during a run, its the days following where I get a bit achey and stiff.

Great timing the Auckland one is coming up, might take part. See how it goes. There far too many people in it and the first few k's are spent weaving.

I've got proper Asics runners from Athletes Foot, they did the full analysis and recommended them. They fit well nice and comfy but I still get sore shins and sometimes knees. It's not a new problem been like that for years :(

Been doing some reading on shin problems and there's some good info out there.

Mine might be a case of pushing way too much too soon. From nothing to 30+ k's a week within a month.

And 5-6 days of training, so planning on cutting back now.

Mentally - if you can do that within a month (0 to 30ks per week and 5 -6 days per week) - you are made to be a runner! You'll do well in the race. You've won the mind game (the mind is a weak point, and not too many people go about conditioning their mind - pushing past "the wall" etc..).

You might have started out too intense. The rest days in between are vitally important. I find if I run 5-6 days per week my body falls apart. My comfortable limit now is about 30ks per week. Any more and it starts complaining. I'd rather do that in 3 10k runs, than 6 5k runs (better conditioning too and you have a rest day inbetween). I usually alternate my running wtih weights at the gym. Sadistically, after Sunday's run - I went to the gym!

Right now without a goal I'm content just to keep things ticking over at 20 - 30 ks/week. That way I'm not up for too much conditioning for the next event.

I've thought about doing a full marathon, but worried about the higher K training commitment on my body. My severly pronated foot strike will just kill my ankles training at those distances per week.

Have you read Dean Karnazes ultramarathon man book? Well worth it. Inspirational and puts our shorter distances into perspective.

LOl dunno about made to be a runner because I am slow at the moment, but working on it.

What's your pace at the moment? You'd be somewhere in the 4-4.5 minutes per k right?

Yeah the mental aspect plays a huge role and like many others I have done other sports at competitive level and know that the mind game is important.

You just gotta tell yourself to keep pushing and there's no question of stopping especially if you're young and fit and there are people out there well in their 60's 70's and older running.

Yes you're right I went too hard few weeks I did 6-7 days of training and then 5-6 days (of just 5-6k's) of running but now that the shins are playing up I have to change and doing 3 5k's in middle week and one 10k in the weekend.

Will review and change as necessary. Been putting ice pack and taking iboprufen (sp) which helps. No haven't read his or any other books as yet or done any research on it - need to because I am a newbie.

But one doco that really sticks in mind is a little 6 year old Indian Kid in India running something ridiculous like 70k's or something. Maybe more with his tiny little 6 year old legs where he has to take 2 or steps to cover 1 adult stride so for him that run was more like a 140k plus run.

See if I can find that doco online.

All fun though, love pushing myself plus KF's advice is helpful too  thanks for the plaster idea auu :o

Depends on what quality you buy and how well you set them up. People on this forum (http://www.nzrun.com/forum/main/show/fid/37-NZRun-Forum) could tell you for sure.

If you were just focused on distance and elevation why not to go with a gps watch? no setup and no inaccuracies caused by varying stride length

Well done guys! CC, http://www.harbourcapital.org.nz/

Wet and windy day in Wellington. First 30km went really well, just cruised at target pace (5:25 per km), nice and comfortable. Into the strong headwind on the way back thru Shelly bay took alot of effort. Didn't eat enough and hit the dreaded wall with 5km to go! Could barely keep moving, ended up walking a few minutes with 2km to go. Light headed, blue lipped, had trouble thinking straight. Dan handed me a snickers bar just as it began to take hold but it was too late. Never had that happen before. Just plain ran out of fuel, couldn't even lift my feet. Last km took about 10min! Good thing it was wet and slippery so i sort of skied / shuffled in to the finish. Was super happy to have a sit down. Came right pretty quick. Good lesson learnt (eat more!) and still happy with the result, 4:11. 20min slower than if all had gone to plan but there is no point being disappointed, it is what it is and it was awesome.
Had a great support crew. Dan was on course the whole way, on a small motorcycle, handing me drinks and bananas as requested. Good fun after too, few drinks, lots of lols.
