Observations from two days in south island...
Everybody says hi when you come into a shop, instead of ignoring you.
You can see the whole milky way and a sky with thousands of stars. makes auckland sky look empty and bland.
Deer are loud while having sex in the mountains in the night.
Rolling hills are kick ass
Gravel mid corner = :shit:
theres no loverly black tarmac, only the rough stuff you get on coast roads up north (this is to stop ice on surface) Hard surface to adapt to.
Our pet goat is awesome.
Sheep run when you hear something and point a torch at them. (then realising it's not mt wellington and somebody is not trying to mug you)
Drinks at te pub cost the same, but the food is decent, and its a relaxing quiet night with big screen telly some chips calamari and chicken nuggets with the flatty.
Nobody is stressed.
Traffic? ....Tui.
you can go down 30 kilometres of road and only see one car.
Even when is CHCH itself traffic on a saturday is like midnight traffic mid week in auckland.
Crossing SH1 off ya face is interesting.
In summary.
Auckland is a hole.

I read your post and am amazed that you actually made the change.
I have to agree with the two posts above and I am impressed with your observations so far.
Congratulations on making the move, I hope it is the beginning of positive things for your future.
If you get a chance to explore further South and you are looking for a place to stop in on your way, you are welcome here, just PM me so that we know you are coming. :yeah: Cheers John.

This is a re post from the thread in the uni section (not sure if you saw it as it was posted late in the game).
Shot Mark, your journey to man hood awaits. Ive given you a lot of shit in the past, well deserved shit as the "soft love" approach hasn't worked (from anyone). Now finally a positive move is about to come to fruition. I for one applaud you. It takes courage to get out of a rut so the first step in your next chapter has been taken, all the hard work lies ahead.
No matter what the outcome I think this will be a catalyst in your life, a real turning point. Good luck & all the best, take it with both hands & suck the marrow out of this life
Some things to think about.....
"It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt."
Mark Twain
"Every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving."
Albert Einstein
"It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop."
Confucius
Respect yourself & others will respect you.
Confucius
"A strong positive mental attitude will create more miracles than any wonder drug."
Patricia Neal
ps: get a picture of that R6 & stick it on your fridge (or similar). Something you can focus on each day. Goals need to be written down & visible on a daily basis.
pps: if you want some excellent reading material I have a book you can borrow. It's called "the secret". I have it on DVD also (silly sister bought it for my recent birthday) so you are welcome to read the book.
PM me your new address if you are interested & ill send it down
All the best

Great places to ride - Coro, Clevedon Routes, Peak Road, SH16 and beyond, SH22 etc
Great beaches, especially out West.

And our better beaches are on the east.

I agree I love the South Island although I prefer the wildness of the West coast beaches myself
Traffic nuffing like London so all cushty to me and don't know what all the fuss is about and the only crime I see is abuse of disabled parking...

heh, even The Stranger looks more southern working in the garage than skidmark does working on the farm. There's something about jandals (gumboots for the farm?), stubbies, a singlet under a sweater and a beanie on your (bald) head that really seems better placed on a south island farm than in suburban auckland.

You have not lived in UK then??
Some Figs - 2006
Population
London - Between 2,494 - 10,000 per sq Km from outside in.
Auckland - Average 989 per sq Km
Area
London - 1,572 sq Km (Population = 7.52 million)
Auckland - 16,282 sq Km (Population = 1 million)
Plenty of space to have some space and avoid arrogant people I reckon.

As this first week of Marks adventure is coming to a close, he is finding his feet.
The cold mornings are making Mark shiver, but he has been up, dressed, fed and ready every morning without moaning by 6.30 then in the cage, off to work, by 7am.
So Mark has discovered that working in a vineyard is hard work. lol
Whilst still in the training team, he is not as slow at the job as he think, and will soon be on contract rates.
Most of the other workers treat him as a cheeky young fella, so far nobody have told Mark to shut up! lol.
With a crew of 50 pruners you can inmagine there are some big lads and some spunkie women.....neither take any shit.
The frosts in the morning so far have made for some good days, Mark is yet to experiance a southerly or that Nth Cant wind full of sleet...lol...that will be fun.So will be the first day I take him to work in the snow!
Cheeky? No less than any other young male of his years I have met. Actually he is better than most of them. So we have a bit of fun baiting each other, he looses most times.
Tidy , yeap, will give him credit for that, clean tidy, and makes his bed every day....plus all those other things a mother does lol. Im not his mother I have to tell him.
Mark also wants to take my bike for a ride, I just laugh and walk away.
He would like to get online a bit more, but there is this computor which is mine, and I limit him to about an hour. he has his own lap top, but there is no screen for it, so untill he can get a cheap monitor his web time is limited.
Any of you CHCH mob got an old dusty monitor in the back room?
It would give him something to do on the cold nights.
Hey thanks all you people for your support for Mark.

It's too old to eat but it's so stupid it doesnt deserve to live, typical goat....has grass all around it but will go as far as it's chain will let it before it will eat anything... it passes over all the best stuff to get that last bit, usually jumping the fence to get to it, the grass is greener on the other side
Silly goat. :(
You learn something new everyday kiddo, Goats don't eat grass, that's sheep. Goat's prefer pretty much anything BUT grass ;)

A guy I used to work with in Twizel got one to eat the ivy off his house to save him clearing it off himself. Goat finished the ivy ... and then proceeded to start eating the clading of the house.

Rugbys a bit ghey. Grown men running round a paddock all over each other chasing a ball.

Yeah, I'd have to agree... Most people moving to NZ from overseas would want to go to the SI since it's what's furthest from what were used to anywhere else. And let's face it, moving around the world would have to bring something to the table eh!
As such, there's bound to be a higher concentration of foreign girls to NZ girls in the SI
