View Full Version : Motorcycle branded apparel - Cool or wank?
McJim
11th May 2008, 22:18
I was just thinking. Since I currently have a Ducati bike, a Ducati belt buckle and a Ducati hat (thanks Justin) and am contemplating getting a Ducati T-Shirt is this cool and a reasonable display of loyalty to a brand or is it just a load of wank and I'm a dumbarse poser?
I have a Ford Falcon but have no need to have even a branded keyring for the Ford coz ford is....well Ford...like I wouldn't wear a Bosch, Hotpoint or Fisher & Paykel t shirt either.
So the question is this: Is it cool to wear apparel with a bike brand on it, is it just a load of wank or does it depend on which brand? (i.e. Is Harley cool and Honda not cool?).

Cool plain and simple.
Ducati is cool either way. So go for gold! :)

A teeshirt or belt buckle, hell even a hat individually is alright. The whole uniform is a wank.

Uncool, like seriously.
saw a guy on a new 1098 the other day, nice bike id love one, but he had complete matching apparel, looked very wanky, he liked it I guess thats all that matters though.
like Hardly riders wearing all the hardley branded stuff from scarfes to underwear to jackets and belts, whats cooler that ? or a well used non branded jacket and straight leather, for me Im thinking the later absolutely.

I think it depends also on the type of apparel.
for example, Ducati Hat - quite cool,
compaired to say... Jap branded socks - not quite so cool :Pokey:

Of course it's wanky - thats why I wear Harley stuff!! (a fair bit of which has actually been has been Xmas/birthday gifts btw!)
If you have to ask you don't have the confidence to wear it:nya:
And I just bought a Kawasaki Jacket off trademe this evening...bugger....does that make me a pile of wank?

Don't worry Scumdog - I'm still getting the tee shirt - and I'll wear it. I just wondered what other people did. This is casual wear though - cap, belt buckle, T-shirt etc. I still wear a Quasimoto jacket, Quasimoto pants, Gaerne boots, Revit gloves and HJC Helmet when actually on the bike.
I figure having DUCATI written in big gold letters on the side of the bike is a dead giveaway BUT when I'm socialising and stuff off the bike it's good to show passers by what I'd rather be doing with a shameless display of brand! :)

I wouldn't do it... I like my Kawas and all, but still. It's bad enough just wearing Alpinstars as it is
But hey, to each their own! Your money, your choice...
I looked at Triumph jackets when in Oz. Awesome jackets except for having Triumph stamped on them.

But you know it - and it's for a reason - so that is cool.
Harley stuff is inherently cool. (Get f*cked if you say otherwise). A overweight balding accountant in a bandanna is not. A fit one might be.

What the man said...
Just like with anything to do with personal image, if a wanker is wearing something branded, he'll generally go overboard with it, and his distasteful personae will show through anyway...making the clothes wanky by association.
However, an unassuming man, looking confident with, let's say for arguments sake, a Triumph branded jacket, will look positively classy...
The look of the branding also plays a big part. Loud colours plastered on every available inch of material will be a huge "try hard" sign.

I'm not into this branded clothing lark
Some retailers are more fashion boutique than bike shop - and thanks but I dont need a restaurant with that
If you're prepared to pay the ridiculous prices for their fancy tee-shirts, more fool you

If you are passionite about say honda, ducati, and want to show it do it.If we all worried about what people thought about things we'd all ride one brand percieved to be coolest.
P/T about ford/holden.Sort of lol.

well i own i motoguzzi and an indian t-shirt, i dont own either brand of bike and id quite like one of those limited release triumph shirts.
BUT you wont catch me wearing a holden or ford shirt or maybe even a surfy label shirt, nor would i ride a ducati in one piece ducati leathers.
I think if its a nice piece of clothing and its subtle then sweet as but not an entire branded outfit.
And so what if im wearing a motoguzzi shirt and geting of a Hyosung, i like the bikes, the shirt is black with white writing, big jobs.
it may be a bit wanky but its all in how you wear it i guess, so you just throw on those snake skin boots, super taper jeans, huge belt buckle that doubles as a bong, your label t-shirt, matching cap and ride into the sunset pal :headbang:

I wear my high viz aerostich suit and I am seen. What people think about me is none of my business... I live to ride another day, again, and again, and again...
I have reflective tape on my rear fender, and a flashing red led light 'cause I never want to hear a cage driver explaining to me again as I am crumpled on the ground after being run over that "Sorry mate, I didn't see you..." :argh:
Saw a bloke once pull up at the Puhoi....on a Red Ducati, in a Red Ducati one piece with Red boots.....he loves his Ducati, this we know, but he was riding alone....:baby:
It's only cool if it's for free.I wear an '80's Honda T shirt with the sleeves cut off over my shirt when trials riding....and wore it over my leather jacket on the dirt track.Found it in the rag bag at work.I also round a genuine NGK T shirt in the rag bag - and by genuine I mean the makers label was even branded NGK.I wore that until it fell apart. If you can't get your branded gear for free, then Savemart is a good second choice....some classy gear in there.
But actually buying clothes with a motorcycle brand on it? That's sick...like,how big is your mirror?

In my opinion theres nothing wrong with branded gear but there is definately such a thing as going overboard... I'm in the 'less is more' camp on this.
Sure I have a lot of HD and Buell gear but I usually go for the discreet branding like a little logo on a sleeve or shirt buttons with the HD bar&shield on them.
Not into HUGE emblems emblazoned across my chest or back.
Unless its a REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY old t-shirt in which case its so cool its sub-zero.

I reckon wear what ya like, and 'up' anyone that bitches at ya.
Though somethings look a bit over the top, time and a place really. Like full one piece Ducati Bayliss rep leathers on a Ducati cruising along at GN250 pace can look out of place. I wouldn't laugh though, I'd just be jealous really that I couldnt have such cool gear. I reckon it looks mint on the track though.
I sometimes get given crapola's when I wear a Duc top under my road gear. Funny eh, but it's ok to step off the 'branded' machine. Those that wear 'gixer' brands under theirs usually slip by without a comment  go figure!
You could keep it subtle like, if your worried, who ever thought there was anything wrong with a sexy pair of Ducati underware.....and no-ones going to bitch about that eh;)

My ex-girlfriend's mother used to have a Porsche coffee machine... She was a hairdresser too.
But no, she didn't have anything else with that brand name on it. I think she won the machine somewhere...
I'd take a Porsche over a Ferrari just about any day. Good engineering and it's designed to be driven, not to be sitting in a heated garage.

So is most of the new Triumph range. They have got the web site together - everything that shows is available in NZ and is priced in NZD.

So what, we all had to start with new gear some time or other. Remenber when you had a new bike or a new jacket. We all put our riding pants on one leg at a time and are all out there on the road doing it. Does it really matter?

ducati jackets are on trademe now. you're a wank if you DON'T buy one!;-D
i have a rider friend who just bought an '08 sv650 and he has a gsxr yoshi jacket and cap, kinda bordering on the wank factor but then he rides like a madman so the jacket may very well totally be worth while!
personally i wouldn't. it makes me think of harley riders or fans. there's a few guys around town with ford pickups and they've got harley stickers and badges and one has a huge flag in the back window and i just think, what a fuckwit..
ducati = yes
jap big four = yes to an extent
brit bikes = yes cos they're classic (ok maybe not if you own a late model trumpy so much)
harley = take it and hang it in the window of your trailer so people know you're an 'outlaw'..
:-) i love badmouthing harley owners..

So how does a jacket fitting perfectly make it not naff. I have some Labour Party Speedo's that fit perfectly, does that mean they are not naff.

I couldn't really give a rotund rodents rectum what brand/label is on my bike gear (or anyone elses for that matter). I've been checking out those $135 cordura jackets on trademe, that probably haven't got an actual brand name ?? Long as it does the job, and I don't have to ask: "does my arse look big in this" ? no real drama really. I've got some "brand label" clothing .... and I don't care who likes it or doesn't .. as long as I feel it suits me ... what ever spins your tyres, eh ! ;)
