View Full Version : Vegan
Well. 40hr famine is approaching, and for this year's famine I wanted to do something different. Something very difficult (as if giving up food for 40hrs isn't hard enough)...
I chose to go vegan for a week. So from midnight last night, to midnight next Sunday (18th), I shall have no meat, nor dairy, nor anything containing any animal products. For those who know me, I would rather my plate had 5 portions of meat and one of vegetables than the other way 'round. This is going to be difficult.
I'll post up a daily diary of my diet each night, with updates on any changes I am feeling (mood, health, hunger etc).
So far a few friends have sponsored me and I'm up around the $60 mark. I'm quite happy with that so far. Wish me luck.

Good luck, you won't have any trouble and will probably feel better for it :2thumbsup
I reckon I'm gunna feel way healthier by the end of the week. And once I get into the habit of checking ingredients in things, it won't be too hard. The temptation is there, but I can hold back.

Obviously you're not married.
You get used to it.
But being a Vegan !!!!!:gob: Are you going to start wearing scruffy sweaters and harping on about global warming, killing seals, and how you are so much a better person than I because you shit lentils?
Just wondering - because the two normally go hand in hand.
Best of luck for the challenge - and look forward to that blood dripping steak at the end of it.

Bwhahahaha so very true.
Personally I think you should always distrust someone whos not prepared to go out, kill an animal, gut it, chop it up, and eat it.
Mmmm meat.

yay! I'm not vegan, I'm and ovo lacto vege, but I'm giving you major bling for being such a good sport to the cause and trying out a different kind of life for a whole week! :D
I was thinking about the 40 hour famine actually, i can never remember when it is.. but i want to try going on an only raw food diet this time... I think it would be really hard for me too as I like my cooked stuff and you can't really eat raw lentils!! lol...

true, it's mostly animal fats which tend to cause weight gain.. nuts apparently have lots of vegetable fat in them, but you'd have to eat a WHOLE lot more to gain weight... Then again, that CAN backfire if you need to put on weight, but are a vegan...
but yes, i have proved the vege weight loss theory myself even though I do eat cheese (not so much right now though), it's quite weird, but tell you what, I've been screeds healthier than I was way back in the days where I had a little meat with my veges (never really enjoyed the meat though :S)

I've so far dicovered that soy milk + instant coffee just isn't the same (where as soy milk + espresso coffee isn't too much different.
I need to take a lot more food than usual to school. Today I took a container of cucumber and tomato, a small container of fruit and nuts, 2 packs of raisins and an apple. I needed way more.
Think I'm going to take roast veges tomorrow and heat 'em in the common room microwave.
But. So far, so good. Will do my food dairy for today after dinner later tonight. I'm just about to head to the vege shed to get some more kai for the week.

Make sure you keep your protein intake up by eating more pulses...beans, seeds, nuts...raw nuts are better than roasted salty ones.
And drink heaps of water. Also, if you start getting digestive issues, eat brown rice as it is high in fibre and settle your stomach down.

What do all hXc's mates do..head for the canteen to buy steak and cheese pies, of course.. They sat right next to him as they scoffed the things. Now I don't even really like pies, but I gotta admit they smell delicious and certainly make your mouth water....

When I nursed, I cared for a lady with TB. That is an old fashioned lung disease (consumption) that used to be fashionable in the olden days. She was vegan. Her diet consisted of the vegetables that were boiled to death by the hospital kitchens, and a handfull of vitamin pills!
You can do that easy. Come up here, I will boil the shit out of veges for you, I think I can find some vitamin pills that have not expired too.
Seriously though, these days chosing a vegan diet is challenging at first, but surprisingly easy once you get started. Good luck mate. You did not ask me to sponsor you :weep:
I've been a vegan for 26 years, and vegetarian for nearly 30 years - and I can still ride a motorcycle. You can easily gain weight as a vegan - quality beers are a totally natural product with no added nasties.
Food combining is the secret, and most ethnic diets that originally had little meat got protein by food combining.Proteins are made of amino acids, complete protein has 16 I think....8 are essential.Nuts, seeds, legumes and grains supply incomplete proteins - so you combine them. The humble peanut butter sandwhich is a complete protein - nuts and grain.Rice and lentils, pita and fallafal, taco and refried beans....etc.
Good luck.

Don't apologise. Our teeth are the 'design' they are because we are supposed to eat whatever we can get our grubby mitts on.
hXc is only going without, because he wants to be involved with the 40-hour famine thing and this way he can still eat....
Those that do it full time...i have trouble understanding why. But it's their choice, innit? And no reason for us carnivores to be ashamed.

I would certainly hope that this fiendishly decadent example of a diet is not the norm at "La maison de H"? Lest I hear your coronaries cries for help from Jaffaland.

Healthy, as long as the diet is being followed intelligently
Today was easy. Not actually feeling any cravings for meat or cheese or anything, although it could be nice.

interesting read.
have a friend who went vegetarian, and i joked saying go the full way and be a vegan.... now she is, which i respect. but how far does one go with it all??
she wanted her grandmas piano (its old and has ivory keys) now refuses to play it because of the ivory. I can understand that, and how some people choose not to wear real fur coats etc, but what if its building materials like native trees used as furniture, or elements woven into materials for clothing, wool in carpets in housing. The animals are farmed to produce a natural material which gets harvested into products this is something which is killing the animals slowly, and not allowing them an organic lifestyle if you call it that.
Eating like this is just one factor to make a statement, but what about what we take off animals for our pleasure, my friend wears makeup, but what if that was tested on animals? shouldnt she not wear it?? im curious here..
Im no vegetarian, and dont eat alot of meat as it was always on the plate for dinner as i was raised on a farm, hardly wear makeup as i cant be bothered unless im going out etc....but in reality where is the line drawn seems that there are lots of non eating factors that i can see which would make me a vegan (just not in the food area)

i lived as a vegetarian from the age 17 til earlier this year [22.] i now eat limited amounts of fish and chicken. however, during my vege years, i never had any meat cravings. and last year, when i was trying to get fit, i completely dropped chocolate and other sweet stuff... no cravings there either.
keep up the good work, kiddo. hope ya olds have a peg handy each!
OK, I know I got a little slack on food dairies etc, but today is the day. I can eat meat again. I can drink milk, and have cheese!
I just a good feed of bacon and eggs on toast, and boy it was so worth the wait.
I can't asctually believe I did it. I didn't eat any animal products all week. Didn't even really think about it after monday either too. Like, I wasn't "craving" meat or cheese or whatever, but I was looking forward to today.
So far, I've raised a total of $105.70 for World Vision's 40hr Famine, and I'm pretty happy with that.
