Engineering M/C parking

You are advised that the barrier arm leading into Car park 5 will be operating as from 4.00pm today.



The barrier arm will be able to be controlled by ALL Engineering Staff who have an access card.



The hours of operation fro the barrier arm will be:



Monday to Friday Open from 7.30am to 4.00pm, closed from 4.00pm to 7.30am (Access Card Required)



Weekends and Public Holidays Closed (Access Card Required)

Just wondering who we talk to to get the barrier arm shortened so as to allow motorcycles to pass, because as is, it is stupid.
I know many of us who park in eng sometimes stay late.
I am thoroughly unimpressed and will (if needed) bend back the barrier if i get stuck inside...

Don't go do anything rash bud, e-mail gordon malinson as he is the dean and ask him what can be done about the barrier arm for motorcyclists. If you go breaking things then they will most likely ban motorcycles in there. The I would have to jump my bike over the barrier to get in and out and that would just be stupid. :laugh:

Dude it doesn't need shortening. When you ride along the flat part of the driveway from where you park your bike towards the ramp down to the street, instead of going down the ramp, continue along the flat part of the driveway past the Engineering workshop and around the corner to the left and you can get out onto Grafton Road there no problem.

BTW there was a big stack of bikes there this afternoon, some verging on blocking the disabled parking space. Don't get too carried away with all and sundry parking there, otherwise you will lose that place altogether. There was plenty of parking available out on Symond Street at that time this arvo, so dunno why everyone was down at Engineering?

Yes that's the one, recently had the markings repainted to read motorcycle parking.
I just don't get why they wouldn't just order a barrier that is 1m shorter????

dude! there is another way around that even a car can manage that is less that 30 metres longer!

which makes the whole barrier arm somewhat stupid...

still it's more secure parking your bike there than out on symond's street.


what pisses me off is how the door on the 2nd floor exit by the lift/stairs and the door on the 5th floor between the lift/stairs and the lockers is locked to all including those with access cards at like 9pm. results in yet another "secure" situation where you end up walking a good 500 m to get from 3rd floor to 5th floor lockers to 2nd floor bike (all up requires 4 lengths of the building plus a full lap outdoors of the library) and you never find a locked door that you can't pass without an access card (ie, any munter could pull it off):mad:

what you can do is simply gett off your bike, lean it over and go under the barrier arm.

And why would EngSci park in the grafton carpark when they're at 70 Symonds St?

As of last week I had access to that door to the eng building after 9pm - actually all my class have had access (although we have 24/7 access to the labs we need, which is rare compared to most of the mech dept).

well today the parking was so appalling had to do something before we all lost parking there! did you see the old cbr600f practically in the disabled park? and was the yellow hyosung still parking you in when you went to leave?

gah, i'm about to send my second email trying to get access through the 5th floor and the second floor doors i need to get through to leave without excessive hassle. this time i think i've found the guy to ask rather than trusting it'd get forwarded on to the right people.

and what's up witht there being no door release for the 3rd floor study area? if you don't have a card and the door locks you've only got the choice of either calling unsafe or using the fire alarm (or breaking the glass)

A few of my friends got stuck in the 3rd floor dynamics and control lab, and we couldn't find anyone with an access card to let them out, so they just hit the escape button and left quickly :p

I'm assuming that's your white/red VFR that's always parked there motorbyclist? I'm curious to know who has the balls to bring an expensive hayabusa to uni as well...

Well I couldn't find anyone with an access card to those labs - only staff and some rare postgrad students have access after 5 - our access cards had all cut, and there was no normal release one. I grabbed someone else I knew and we both went looking for staff, but they'd all gone home (around 6 by then).

So yea, if they're retarded enough not to have a door release button on the inside and lock off people's access cards after 5pm, then they can deal with the consequences of people going "holy crap I'm going to be locked in the lab overnight".

haha yeah, and i know how easy my bike is to hotwire/use the universal screwdriver key, so not so keen to park on symonds st like the other guy with the red one is. watch out my vfr won't be red/white for long (unless i crash or get lazy after a trackday);)



yeah i'm not too fussed about security guards really. if their system is stupid enough to lock people in they can pay for the repeated callouts

though this new gate for "security" is really an interesting one seeing as you can drive around it... maybe it's just an expensive way to keep students from parking cars in there or something... mind you i suppose it's only to stop the oppurtunist thiefs... anyone who wants to get in there need only barge through the gate (or drive around), break that flimsy door and they're in: axe + ute = full acces

did i mention my episode of trying to exit the building to find all the fire exits are locked from both sides? i walked the full flight of stairs in full gear to find the ground floor was locked from the inside, and on my way back up every other door was locked bar the 5th floor... then after my 15 minute journey i finally got to my bike as it started raining... it normally only takes 20 minutes for to ride home

if it wasn't for that one unlocked door behind 3403 leading around the back to a fire staircase that leads up to 5th floor with another door that doesn't lock i could get locked out from my locker, or locked in the building. so it's security that isn't secure and is a major hassle for people who are meant/need to have access

Yes, it is rather retarded... Hope the bike parking there becomes emptier... I intend to be parking there within a fortnight (ideally).
