I rode GN back to my place today(With Stephen's escort) !!!!!!

It was so scary doing 80kmh on mortorway

I wanna name it like what some of you guys do, but havent come up with yet and there's someone who named his GN250RR, so maybe I should call it GN250SS (It's Red too!! Red should go faster right?)

This is my TO DO and wish list for GN:

TO DO:
Tyres
EDIT: GASKETS
Oil&filter
Brake fluid
Other basic maintenance things it need (plug, air filter and what else?)

Wish list:
Straight Handle bar (must do lol)
Adjustable clutch lever(any Kawasaki's adjustable one will do)
Brighter but smaller tail-light
HID head light
Double side Exhaust
Bikini Cowl :p
and many many more...

Theres so much more to list but I will be broke after Tyres for while...

If the weather is fine I'm planning to goto Cycletreads on Thursday, can anyone escort me there????

I'm so happy right now, thanks to Jeremy(previous owner), Stephen&Hanne and rest of you in SMC and KB who helped me to get this bike!!!! You guys are :first:

Ofcource I'll try to ride it everyday and practice!!

I aint got a name for my current bike. Last blade was called Sheila....gonna be fun bro. Get your tyres sorted at Cyclethreads. Oil, filter and brake fluid can be done at Stevo's. Basically all the maintenance stuff can be done at Stevo's.

HID lights & twin exhaust?? haha that would be fun..

if you want good tyres get BT45s

much stickyness and last for ever...
plus they are good in the wet/cold/dry/track/./././

ohh and they squeal when you hit the spot

I could escort you in the afternoon or early morning, but I'll have a hard time doing anything below 65 km/h and going slow only burns my petrol faster!

Bomma or Steveo will be your best bet.

Who's that? and what is gonzales...... And I reckon its "she", but she could stay as GN250SS (might make custom "SS" decal and stick it to side covers!)

Yea I want GN cafe racer someday (when I have money) I'm sure it's gonna be magazine featured!!! :p

Cycletreads guy told me they got bridgestones so must be that tyre I guess? Do they make BT45s for GN???

yes, do do!

Straight Handle bar (must do lol)
Adjustable clutch lever(any Kawasaki's adjustable one will do)

HID head light
Double side Exhaust
Bikini Cowl :p
and many many more...

neons
chrome EVERYTHING
lowered and hydraulics
spoilers
RR stickers EVERYWHERE
a PS3, Xbox360 and huge LCD screen that all folds out from under the pillion seat
amps and subwoofers
replace petrol tank with an aquarium
carbon fibre mudguard for weight reduction (remember to chrome)
pink tassles from the bar ends

now i hate to kill your buzz a bit, but maybe wait a few months and/or get a few hundred Kms under your belt first.... i'd hate to see a "just scratched/crushed my shiny new exhaust, broke my lights and clutch lever, bent my handlebars, buggered my fairings, and basically wrote the bike off when i *insert basic newbie stuff up SMC learners always manage to do here*" thread (just ask dushi, plus even stephen manages to crash his GN from time to time - ruining my new helmet in the process)

i'm especially saying this as you've bought a "weekend warrior" bike, that is, you will only get to learn how to ride on weekends while pushing your limit rather than slowly while commuting every day (and learning how to manage traffic when you're on a seemingly invisible bike)

so after you've done the neccessary mechanical work and actually learnt how to ride the thing, then we look at turbochargin' the ginny:niceone:

how does "SUZUKI GN250turbo" sound?

True that... I rode it little bit this morning and it was still scary.... those parts are not necessary, except the handle bars! (those shape of handlebars are hard to control than straighter ones aren't they?)

I'm gonna check what Dushy posted now :p

One more mechanical thing.

GASKETS.

Stephen is searching cheap one at the moment(some shop told me $120 for full set!!)

Man just seems like you are having such a hard time getting used to riding a CBR Fireblade Ewen...I think it is a priviledge in been able to own a litre bike and to be able to ride. Toughen up and learn to control that throttle and you will have a blast with the bike.

You're right about the previlege part but since I chucked in (Power Commander) PC II it's been snatchy down low between 3500 revs in second and third gear, similar to what Issac felt when he chucked the PC III on his bike.

The theory is, the bike is actually running lean so it chugs forward a bit when I am cruising smooth open throttle at around 3.5 k revs and disappears after you hit 3.6/3.7/4 k revs.

I think It's a standard flat spot for the 929 but then again I reckon when you get the time this or next week, have a ride and see what you think.

I am yet to switch the fuel injector back to factory standard and check what difference it makes as all this time I've been riding with the PC on, and still have to fiddle with the mapping program on my laptop!

Other thing is I don't exactly want to pay $300 to be Dyno, it's something that isn't a priority right now. Although I did manage to meet Geoff on KB who lives in Mission Bay who is a engineer by profession and he built his own Dyno and stores it down in a farm in Ramarama.

I'll take it down when the time is right.

+1 both on Andrew and yourself!

Learn the lesson that your ego is doing the talking most of the time, bling doesn't make you ride better and only get what's necessary!

Read up on riding techniques, attending courses, go out riding and hit some practice by yourself will give wayyy better return than bike bling!

But don't let me stop ya from spending but it's good to know the priorities!

Yea it's good to have good gears but practice makes perfect in everything! (so as in Violin playing, but I'm so lazy at the moment :p)

Altho I find mirror is too close to me, so hard to see whats in my back... I diffinitely do need straight handlebars!!!

Well I aint got a power commander on my bike but I know it is running rich no problems...I do get a sort of chucking on my 929 too when commuting but I have had that across all my Fireblades...well I suppose getting it remap would be the only way to go mate to smooth it all out.

have you guys considered using a lower gear to keep the revs up in a smoother power region of your rev ranges?

2wheeljunkie

have you guys considered using a lower gear to keep the revs up in a smoother power region of your rev ranges?

dont think there is a gear lower than 1st gear andrew..unless the 929 has a -1 gear..like some trucks have just low torque gears for those sticky situations..not sure what their called..sure pocketcracker will know..

motorbyclist
15th May 2008, 00:27
well either it's jumpy cause they're cruising in top gear and it's revving too low so surging and sputtering, or they're going in 1st gear at high(ish) revs and have too much power available making it twitchy, in which case they should move up a gear or 5

the reason we have gearboxes is to allow us a degree of control over the power output at a given speed, so to use one gear only and complain the engine isn't behaving seems a bit silly

EDIT: gearboxes also help give a higher top end when the engine redlines, and have obvious fuel economy/engine abuse advantages

Well I can easily cruise with 2nd and 3rd gear ...without issues used to be able to just cruise with 3rd before chucking the aftermarket exhaust. No it flys on pretty much any gear. Like I said has happen to all 3 of my Fireblades. Must be something about ex-suzuki riders been used to explosive throttle power then switching to a Honda. Wait to you hit 6000rpm on the blade and the bike flys....

I think in Ewen case it is jumpy as I have riden on it before just felt the same as my bike. I truly think that it is all the way we ride the bike....agreed with Andrew that one just need to adjust to the appropriate gear when riding. Surely not all gears are exhibiting the same problem. My bike has done twice the amount of k's than Ewen's and I dont seem to have a problem with such a wonderful bike.....since I am saying so many nice things about the 929...anyone wanna buy my bike so that I can buy a Repsol? anybody?

First you must become one with your GN.

Sit on your bike and contemplate the meaning of being a rider, feel the what the bike is trying to tell you and learn it's personality. Once you have centered yourself, then you may start the bike.

Then you must go on lengthy group rides with all your KB buddies and learn the true meaning of freedom.

I'd suggest rather than just hooning out there on a few rides that you spend a fair bit of time going slow, riding round cones in empty car parks and learning to control the bike smoothly at low speed, then a bit more around town riding, then a bit of open road with 1 or 2 others.... If you want to do some round cones riding and stuff you can join hanne's sister as she practises for her BHS

THANKS HEAPS to Bomma for guiding me to cycletreads and back and guys at cycletreads to sort out new tyres for me!! :first::2thumbsup

There wasnt any matching tyre so I got

Rear- IRC RS310 for $109

and then....

FRONT "PIRELLI" CITY DEMON!!! $85 :D

I learnt lots today by going through the harbour bridge...:

-make sure the fuel lever is "on"
while I was waiting for Bomma I turened it off coz from my google searching parking for more than 20mins should turn the lever off. Forgot to turn it on and then stuck before entering motorway :o
(thanks to Lime green Kawasaki guy who stopped for me to make sure I was allright!)

-Hill start is f**king difficult.
It's just so hard! Stupid Auckland have so many hills and I have to keep holding the rear-brake while Tip-toeing with my right foot, then gotta worry about clutch and throttle! It's not nice!!!

-Right gear for right pace, corner etc...
Still finding it hard to find which gear is right for which situation...

-Crazy car drivers!
They try to cut lanes whenever they want to! I'm here! Can't you see me!!!???

-Bridge is so windy!
It is! Gotta duck down to tank, otherwise I'll get blown away

-I do need Straight handle bar!!
I just need it, the bar is too close I think!

-Dushy got new cool ride!!!
He got a new ride for his girlfriends. One in his lap and rest in the rear box...

dude, seriously, don't bother turning it off. it isn't neccessary. maybe when you park up for the day/night you should bother, but it's only to stop water coalescing and sinking into your carbies (which takes much more than 20 minutes) and make life difficult for theives

-Hill start is f**king difficult.
It's just so hard! Stupid Auckland have so many hills and I have to keep holding the rear-brake while Tip-toeing with my right foot, then gotta worry about clutch and throttle! It's not nice!!!

remember the front brake! how do you hill start a car? you use the handbrake: same for a bike. use front brake, slowly let out clutch till bike starts pushing against the front (bike will rise slightly) and let off the front brake. you'll start moving every time no problem. after a while you'll get so smooth you can use the clutch to hold yourself on a hill anyway (ten guesses why my clutch is wearing out)

-Right gear for right pace, corner etc...
Still finding it hard to find which gear is right for which situation...

whatever you do don't change while turning unless you have to; the sudden jolt on the rear wheel can cause it to skid, and then it's bye-bye to your crash-free record

-Crazy car drivers!
They try to cut lanes whenever they want to! I'm here! Can't you see me!!!???

no they can't. assume they're blind and retarded. most of them are.

EDIT:

jsut saw the pics;

remember new tyres are very slippery for the first hundred km or so

your L licence limits you to 70kph - that means no motorway riding and for good reason too. if you go do over 80kph with the L plate showing you can expect a ticket. plus you won't be insured in an accident as you're breaking the terms of your licence

I'll stay away from motorway for time being!(please don't report to cops about today :p)

One more thing, I need boots! My chucks high-cut gets hot when engines get hot, need thicker boots!!!

your L licence limits you to 70kph - that means no motorway riding and for good reason too. if you go do over 80kph with the L plate showing you can expect a ticket. plus you won't be insured in an accident as you're breaking the terms of your licence

Haven't seen a single cop enforcing that yet.

Insurance is important. Remember, in a accident you were not doing over 70/pulling a wheelie/etc.

I wasn't taking the piss, you dropped your helmet once of the rear seat on your gn and then proceded to drop it again from above waist height in front of nish and me, get a new helmet, you have only one head bud, protect it. Don't ride in trainers, I know stephen does but i'll have a talk to him about that. lol

technically, yes. they absorb impact by breaking, and you just fractured it, lessening it's effectiveness in an accident

but in practice, not just yet - you're likely to just drop it again. soon you'll learn how to keep a hold of it and put it where it can't fall (on the ground or on the end of your handlebar).

so keep this in mind and buy a new helmet after a few more inevitable drops. always buy a new helmet after an accident if you hit your head on the ground. i do hope you didn't spend more than $130 on that helmet:(

i remember the first time i came off on my learners - felt the helmet squish around my head!

Haven't seen a single cop enforcing that yet.

Yes, but there it was a coombination of breaking a couple of riles, plus whatever he'd been doing to get pulled over in the first place.

Doing 100km/h with your L-plate on the back you should be safe, unless the cop really wants to nail you for something. :)

Why? No? No need for back-step (or rear-sets as we say in English) with clip-ons; GN ones aren't so far out that they make it too horrible.

I've already seen one GN with clip-ons it; the trick is, to put them on top of the top yoke, therefore dropping the front end slightly too (in order to get enough room above the yoke to fit them). GNs have far too much rake stock anyway.

Don't listen to people at the Chiller, they all ride silly modern sportsbikes and have no idea about proper café racer ergonomics :D Take a look at photos of early Gold Star DBD34 racers, see where their feet are.

The yokes are also known in American English as triple clamps; they are the two flat clamps that join the forks to the frame. The top yoke is the one on top -- on your bike, this is what the handlebars attach to.

Rake is the angle the forks are on. GN250 is sort of baby-cruiser style, so it has a large rake -- the forks are on a big angle. This makes it turn slow and handle like a pig.

Clip-ons can either go below the top yoke (more normal cafe racer style) or on top. You'll probably want the clip-ons on top; this is so the bars aren't too low and the ergonomics are good with respect to the pegs. In order to put the clip-ons on top of the yoke, the forks will have to come up through the yokes so there's fork sticking out the top to clamp to. This will decrease rake (and lower front end), making it turn faster. It can also make it unstable, but the GNs I've seen like this, nobody has reported any problems like tank-slappers or anything.

you reckon?

being one of the sprotsbike guys at the chiller i was thinking of just normal clip-ons under the tripleclamp(:p), which of course wouldn't really work so well on a GN where you aren't leaning forward at all.... with banzai's height/size he's already having trouble reaching the bars so putting them further out of reach seems a bit silly....

Further improving the position by putting the clip-ons on top, because you're lowering the front end to get enough fork to clamp on, you're changing the stance (tilting the bike forward) a bit. Not drastic, but it did make a difference when I did it with my bike (CB250RS pegs are also fairly conservative, still want rearsets, but that's only for clearance and comfort on long bits of motorway).

Because I'm real hard bastard, now I've got the bars under the yoke, but the front end is still lowered (although not quite as much, BT45 90/90-18 on the front improved turn-in to an acceptable level).

There's a couple of drawbacks with clubman bars which stopped me using them; first, they will get in the way of you lowering the front end, so you're stuck with the long rake and slow turning. Secondly, they're fixed and unadjustable; you can move clip-ons up and down the fork, rotate them forward and back until you find the most comfortable position. With clubman bars, you're kind of stuck with the height you get.

Give it a shot, though, bars are cheap, so if they don't suit then it's not too much money to worry about.

Tank slapper -- hugely unlikely, given the degree you're lowering the forks. The GN starts out with massive rake. My little CB has much less rake to begin with, yet dropping the front-end significantly has not caused any front end instability. Different bikes, I know, but those I know who've done things like this to their GNs haven't mentioned anything like that.

On a small bike at 120kph, more likely to get a weave than a crazy tank slapper like that.

Those clubman bars look seriously masochistic for anything other than café racing! And one would be racing, as minimum transit time between cafés would be optimal. (therefore minimum wrist and neck suffering) .

spark plug socket, screw driver (flat and posi), spanners and allen keys to fit your bike and pliers. basically the stuff needed to adjust levers as needed and fiddle with carby/sparky/air filter if she stops running for whatever reason. a roll of electrical tape and some cable-ties never hurts either.

don't overdo it, there's not much use in carrying many tools unless you know how to use them, and then when you do need to use them murphy's law dictates it's not a job that can be done on the side of the road and/or you're missing just the one tool that you need to do it

i check tyre pressure whenever i fill up at the station before a ride, so monthly at the worst.... every now and then i'll give her a squeeze just to be sure

OOps to late, your speedo drive at the front wheel has probably siezed, they don't lube them properly when they assemble them, happened to mine just outside warranty.Don't bother with new handle bars unless they are really bent and unsafe,as they are likey to get bent again while you are still learning.
Haldanes are pretty good but it pisses me off Suzuki don't get the speedo/drive lubed properly when they know its a known fault.

oh yeah, that sucks

nearly did that myself this morning mounting a curb - with the brand new fairings on though there was NO way i was letting it fall

just be sure to learn where to grab your bike when it does that - i dropped my 250 once, and it trying to save it i grabbed it by the helmet lock and made a nasty mess of my fingers (but the bike was OK!)

Fun and games of owning a bike Mr Banzai. last night I left the office on my way home on a 7000km old bike and my rear brake line came loose and dumped all the brake fluid on one of the steepest hills in Auckland (the one near the corner of Princess St and Parliament st that leads down to the Metrolpolis). I had to do the bitch of all hill starts with the front brake whilst clouds of smoke brewed off the exhaust from the leaky fluid.

Fun and games.

I punished the bike later on on the ATNR (after i bled the brake and topped it up again).

Hmm ok, my chain seems ok but I'll keep my eye on.

3) don't be surprised when the regulator/rectifier packs up(battery will start running flat).

From my research they are expensive to replace aren't they? What can I do to prevent that?

rectifier yes up to $200-300 for a Honda....a GN? maybe less I suppose.

You only use WD40 on chain when you wanna give it a chain good clean bro. Keep using the chain lube...spray lube every 300km's and use WD40 to clean every 1000km's then lube again. I clean and lube my bike after every big ride....a properly maintained chain will last quite a while.

Banzai -- the chain is probably OK, being yours is a 2004 GN250. Most of the issues described are a problem on brand-new GN250s (the newer ones are manufactured in China, and the quality is not as good as the Japanese factories), so the problems have most likely been taken care of.

Nonetheless lubing cables and lubing the chain is a good thing to keep an eye on. WD40 makes a reasonable chain lube, but it flicks off the chain quickly so you have to lube it frequently. Better off using a proper chain lube to make your life easier.

If you don't have any money for new bars, I've got an old (slightly bent) set of CB250RS bars you can have for nothing. CB250RS bars aren't clubman bars or anything, but they're reasonably flat and would be a lot more comfortable than the GN250 ones. If you rolled them back a little bit they'd almost be perfect. The left side is bent downwards slightly, but it's pretty easy to bend them back into shape.

I rode GN around today. Took it to work, then took it to Haldanes to get Speedo Cable replaced, met Rie there to find boat shop along Gt South road for ground anchor(Rie needs one to keep her bike from dangerous neighbour :p guy in Haldane suggested to go some boat shop? along the road) but we couldn't find it lol

Wen't to warehouse in somewhere to shop for WD40 but none in stock. I had to drop something off to howick so I left, during my trip there I tried Repco in Gt south road near Market RD exit but they didn't have any as well, had time when I arrived at Howick, went to Botany Warehouse but none there too. Then finally found one at Botany Repco!!!

PM sent!!! I bought WD40 at repco today, can I use it for all Lubrication points mentioned in owner's manual? It says in some parts use motor oil some parts Grease ???

grease and oil are two very different things, and then there is many different types of grease, so you can only substitute the two in certain instances where both will suffice, but usually they can't be interchanged

in short, if you aren't sure about it ask someone who knows what they're talking about.

in general:
cables=wd40
chains=wd40, but chain lube is ultimately what they need to run
belts=NOTHING (not that your bike has any)
removing tight/rusted bolts = crc556 and hammer/impact driver
reinstalling bolts that you don't want to rust in place=either will work, grease is MUCH better
any unsealed bushings/bearings that aren't bathed in oil = grease
anything with a grease nipple = grease
anything electronic = contact cleaner and nothing more unless you know you can get away with it - remember oil doesn't conduct electricity
brakes=don't get any oil/crc anywhere near your brakes - it will soak into and ruin your pads, and may cause the piston seals to perish and eventually fail

and no matter how tempting it is, do not silicone spray your tyres - results in zero traction and the overspray onto the brake discs gives zero braking power

Thanks heeeeeeaaaaps to xerxesdaphat for installing it!! :sunny:

We had to cut a little thing sticking from switch boxes to fit the bar in (original bar have holes to make them stay in place).

That took while to organise lol but other than that, everything went smooth.

After he left I took it for test ride.

It handles waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than normal bars!!!!!!:wari_nana:

I can weave so much easier at any speed, I can lean easier, and it feels much more confortable! (It feels like I have complete different bike! :p)

Yep, the GN250 has got that silly system where they drill holes into the handlebars and have a tab on each switchblock so they locate onto the bars. Silly system, because it means you need to drill new bars (not a problem if you have the tools, but I didn't bring an electric drill) and also it means you can't adjust switchblocks to rotate them or slide them to where you like it comfortably.

We were worried about the throttle unit in particular rotating around the bars. Decided in the end to cut off the tabs, then get some heavy-duty duct-tape (the fibre/cloth kind), wrap one layer around, then use that as extra grip, as the GN250 switchblocks seem to entirely rely on the locating tab for friction.

Eventually got it sorted out after some fiddling.

Bars are more bent than I realised, but Banzai seems comfortable. Maybe somebody could get a length of pipe on the end of them to straighten them out? At any rate they're not causing problems in the mean time.

Brake master cylinder got inverted accidentaly, brakes are still very effective (I could easily two-finger lock the front brake), but tomorrow I'll bring some brake fluid and bleed the brakes at uni. Banzai reckons the brake lever pulls in a little further than it used to, so not good.

Head gasket is definitely blowing. You can feel it with your hand, and when the engine was fired up there was a tiny, momentary puff of smoke from the barrel/head interface. Chain could use a little more tension too, but it's not too bad. When's next SMC workshop night then? Lovely relaxed engine, though. No rattles, smooth as anything. Banzai -- if you still want it to do 9,500rpm, we'll chuck a CB250RS engine in it :D

Pffft, what's $20? Besides, when I had my crash into a car, resulting in that huge dent in the tank, then sliding along the road for a little while, all that happened to the bar-end mirror was some road-rash on the stem. Despite hitting the car and sliding on the side of the bike where I have the mirror.

They rotate on a spring detent system, so just fold out of the way, really.

How's that gearshift? Is it still heavy? Did it go that way after you tried adjusting the clutch? Remember -- the big thin nut is just a locknut to keep it secure. The smaller longer nut, you screw in to make the cable slacker (i.e. have to pull in right to the bars to use the clutch), screw out to make the clutch cable tighter (only have to pull in a little bit to use the clutch). Are you pulling the clutch in the whole way? If not, and you're not rolling off the throttle properly, the gearshift will be heavy.

EDIT: Here's an auction for the mirror I have on my bike, $25 no reserve or $30 buy-now http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Parts-accessories/Frames-bodywork/auction-157188502.htm

just to do a head gasket? under an hour provided you have decent internet to find a manual/walkthrough

20 minutes with squiggles, i'd say 30 minutes but probably take 3 hours seeing as you'd may as well re-seat the valves, replace rings, replace piston for high-compression one, adjust tappets, mod the airbox/intake, build a high-flow high-noise exhaust, fit injectors and supercharge

just to do a head gasket? under an hour provided you have decent internet to find a manual/walkthrough

Hehe don't forget FCR carbs!!!

I got full set except valve seals and preferbly want to change everything.
adjusting tappets and airbox mod can be done as well :p

I need to steal Xeresphat's twin side exhaust!!!

Realistically want to change sprokets to get more high-geared setting so that I dont have to shift up whenever I have to turn at lights and sligthly lower revs at 100kmh....

Bleh if you could make them fit, you could have them too lol -- I really want a two-into-one, twin exhausts are weighty and don't sound as nice (to my ear). Look shit hot though, with a high-temp black coating.

In terms of sprockets, be careful. Taller gearing will make it slower to accelerate, and the poor little Ginny (which struggles to get up to 100kph-110kph at the best of times) will really have a hard time getting up there. I know by making my gearing taller it really killed the top-end. I'll be going back to stock.

It is a little irritating having the thing howling up high in the rev range at 100kph, but realistically it's designed to do just that and it's not going to hurt it.

I initially thought it was just the base gasket, as that's where its leaking oil from. Until he fired it up and it became obvious that the head gasket is blowing.

So definitely both need doing.

Why are both leaking this early? Was the whole lot not torqued up properly?

They're common as bulbs, most older japanese cars use em. Cheap as chips too if you shop around.

Yep, no problem with slightly dimmer bulbs. 35W seems excessively shit, though, might not be that bright ^^

With your existing rusty light bits, you could always sand them back and paint them gloss black! Would fit in with the Road Sports theme :D I mean, they're ruined anyway with rust, painting them isn't going to make it worse. Then get some cheap chrome replacements later on.

No, it definitely had wheels. And they weren't all that nice anyway.

Rie has only two legs as far as I know (although you did struggle to get into those leathers, didn't you?), but she has some sort of superpowers nonetheless. Who else has seen that side-stand trick? From where I was standing it looked like she was picking the bike up a good 400mm from the ground and turning it around O_o; . You might speak of midget tossing, but GPX tossing is just as good!

I'm fooked if I know what to do with GiJoe1313's RD250LC stand; it's suicidal. It's in front of your foot, and is practically vertical, so rolls forward and off with the slightest touch. Add to that the two-stroke lack of compression -- so no `handbrake' by putting it into first gear -- and I've had more than a few close calls and strained muscles wrenching it upright before it toppled over. Also, I believe it's made out of some kind of cheese.

Centre-stand only.

That bike wants to harm me, I'm sure.

Actually -- just twigged why my CB250RS stand is bent sideways/outwards, always wondered howtf that occurred. Rie or perhaps her mother was a previous owner.

Yeah I always feel a bit dodgy resting the 160kg or so on the damn stand!!!

Nyeh! I used that trick all the time - VTR250 AND Firestorm (196kg DRY! ~220kg wet)

As long as yer on solid ground, it's all good. Sidestands seem to be pretty close to the balance point of most bikes. I've seen it done on full-dresser Harleys! (But if the sidestand is gammy...discretion may be the better part of valour...)

I know where you've all been too - that three wheeled thing is a great promo tool (And yeah, that Cagiva is pretty sweet too - Japanese reliability with Italian style  TL1000 engine )

Ragingrob
18th June 2008, 15:00

Just looked back the beggining of the thread.

TO DO:
Tyres (Done)
GASKETS (Not yet)
Oil&filter (Not yet)
Brake fluid (Not yet but maybe ok for now)
Plug (Don't need to yet)
Air filter (Not yet)

Wish list:
Straight Handle bar (Done but want GB250 straight bars)
Adjustable clutch lever (not yet, perhaps it's ok)
Brighter but smaller tail-light (Not yet, still looking for one)
HID head light (Changed to Halogen, but want 45/45w Halogen)
Double side Exhaust (Single "Capton Muffler" would look cooler?)

Does it suppose to be called Capton Muffler? This website says so and thats how we say in Japan..
http://www.cmsnl.com/products/capton-muffler-chrome-super_5431087850/

Bikini Cowl (Not really a Bikini but half cowling. DONE!)

Something to add:
Chains.
Front sprocket same teeth.

Couple suggestions from FilthyLuka:
Rear sprocket maybe one tooth smaller (less revs in 100kmh cruise)

Clean up the ports with a dremel and a carbide bit

He also suggested dump airbox and change to pod filter and Jet the carb but I think I will leave it as it is :)

Slow but nice progresses :D

Rear sprocket maybe one tooth smaller (less revs in 100kmh cruise)

gearing it up also means less torque when trying to accelerate to that 100kph cruise

(will feel less grunty)

That's why we need MORE POWWERRRRRR!!!

How much would porting give me? I don't need custom porting but want to smooth out the port. Do you have any tool for that?

How can I get more Torque out from this engine?
I think this engine's charactor is total opposite of 2strokes.

Have enough torque to pull the bike up to 100kmph smoothly without peakiness. (but not as much torque as multi cyls ofcource)

Its sort of like old British engines (Don't know about british bike engines but old british lightweight sports cars does not have screaming high revving engine like what Italian had)

I'm not expecting high performance from GN250 but want to make it more fun bike to ride :first:

high compression piston kit!

big bore kit!

(note if you make the engine markedly more grunty the clutch then gearbox start to go)

Do a search, many have asked, answers have been given... theres not much to be gained without a lot more money than the bike is worth, and most gains are offset by other losses.

That's bit toooooooo extreme! :p

Won't porting and exhaust change would give me some extra couple hp?

In GT4 they do XD

How hard is it to pull +3hp from motorbike engines? (25hp would match with CB250RS spec :D)

I want to keep it light tuned.

GN400 Carb!

Like what your FXR have RS carbs?

Hmmm tempting... Maybe DR350 carbs, it's newer. But then it's gonna meke it peaky as like your FXR :p

Whats wrong with my FXR? It's got MOAR PAWA and that's good! :oi-grr: lol

Get an air filter like mine too :D hahaha

BANZAI -- probably best to just leave the engine alone, to be honest. I want to rebuild my spare CB250RS bits into a 325cc monster, but don't have any illusions about it being cost effective or even that it will last 100,000kms without attention. Remember I won't be selling my bike either; doing things like that to an engine generally isn't good when you want to sell it.

I'd enjoy what you have, you're right, the GN250 is an old-style thumper, slow-revving torque. Stick an open megaphone on it and enjoy :D

Yep. I don't want to change too much, but want to fine tune what I can

1939 Triumph Tiger 100 had 500cc engine producing 34bhp, weigh around 190kg

Which is very similar P/W ratio to GN (T100 5.58823529 GN250 5.86363636 actually GN is slightly better)

T100 can do "100miles" (actually 150kmh lol). So GN should!!!

Hehe fully tuned DR350 engine

Single "Capton Muffler" would look cooler?

It's actually called CABTON muffler and the word came from Japan, it stands for

Come And Buy To Osaka Nakagawa

The motorcycle maker called CABTON existed back in 30s-60s? in Japan had this shape of muffler.

(second pic in row of pics in museum, the bike has CABTON logo on it)
http://www.imai-auto.jp/s_owner/detail.cgi?no=48

It was a copy of ARIEL muffler.

Strange thing is some of Triumphs have this shape of mufller too.

What are they called in english then!???

I wish I can do motorcycle history paper, I won't mind researching all the stuff for it and write 5000words essay eh... Stupid music history!!!! :angry2:

GNX-R250 is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :first:

Took us two days to put all back together and it's running great!!!

Couldn't do the fairing but thats can be done sometime later...

Didn't take any photo coz we had to rush through everything :p

See some of you guys tomorrow at RRRS!!

PS:Hanne can you please upload photos of fix night???

Time to Update!!!

Went to Andrew(Motorbyclist)'s place to attach the fairing!

Borrowed Stephen(Squiggles)'s rear career to attach the fairing at the back. I didnt tight bolts & nuts here and there so lost couple of them on the way :pinch:

Thanks to Andrew's stock of spare bolts and nuts, we found good pairs for it :)

Drider(Dushy) grinded right top bracket which we had trouble fitting in last time and Andrew used his manpower to bend the other side to fit nicely

Here is the result!!

It feels much more confortable at higher speed, less wind hitting me. :D
Also I feel it is easier to accerelate from 80-100kmh. Maybe it is easier to get to its Max speed than naked, but still it takes aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages to get up to that speed :p

But also if wind hits from side, the bike get moved around lots more than before. Gotta watch out!!

Need to paint this sometime later and it will look very cool! :Punk::rofl:

PS: Last photo: "real man's shed" he says
