FXR maintenance - guidance

I read through my manual recently and figured I would like to try do some of the regular maintenance that the manual suggests myself. Anyways the time has come as indicted by the manual to clean the air filter which I will be doing sometime on saturday.

"Fill a washing pan of a proper size with non-flammable cleaning solvent. Immense the air cleaner element in the solvent and wash it clean."

Now, excuse the ignorance but what 'non-flammable cleaning solvent' are they refering to here? Such as?

"Immense the air cleaner elelment in a pool of motor oil..."

Can I just use the same oil it recommends for me to use when changing my oil? Also as far as oils go, any recommendations of what would be considered to be a 'premium quality four stroke motor oil'? Brands etc.

Advice from those knowledgable and experienced riders as always is greatly appreciated. :) Thank you

well I dunno about other blokes here but the whole no flammable thing is to avoid bein sued. I just use good old fashioned petrol.
As for oil to use --the stuff ya need is air filter oil-Yes it is a special kind of oil.

And don't "immerse the filter in a pool of oil" - the filter only needs light oiling. Buy a proper filter oil, such as BelRay; the can will have directions printed on it.

Petrol is very carcinogenic, wear gloves and kerosene works well enough & is a less deadly. Heck we all use petrol ‘cause it’s handy, but the unleaded stuff does kill the foam a teensy bit quicker than the old leaded stuff.

Buy filter oil & one of those $1 squeezy bottles form payless plastics or wherever & you can fairly evenly distribute it on the inside. Then put in a plastic bag & squeeze it throughout.

There are low flash point cleaning solvents.I just use engine or gearbox oil....but then I'm as tight as a wad.

Hey, if it works why not. I tend to use deisol as a cleaning agent for the same reason.

I had as little clue as you the first time I went to clean my fxr's filter... :cool:

Gave Colemans a call and the recommended just basic old homegrade all purpose cleaner. Seemed to work fine... :niceone:

And then I just used the same oil that I put in the bike on the filter as well...

No probs so far and I ride it most everyday :cool:

I just use petrol too,but you need to use proper filter oil,engine oil will run to the bottom of the filter over a period of time :eek:

I use the no toil kit for my 230. it is great but the filter oil is really stick and it takes a while to get off.

Hey mate, mings missus here, I have just got myself an fxr and the air filter is o,k but has small cut in it and was needing a new foam filter but was told I had to but the whole kit does anybody know where I can get just the foam filter. Also I want to take my back wheel off but have no main stand so how do I do this without one, any ideas???

i wash my air cleaner in kerosene then lighly oil it.
I definatley recomend motorex motor cross oil , made in switzerland its high quality , called power syn 4T 10w 50 Fully synthetic, high-performance engine oil for 4-stroke motorcycles. optimum protection against engine wear, extreme temperature and shear stability. Maximum friction-coefficient.
