View Full Version : Ear piercings vs helmet?

Gothesque

I have a fair few piercings in my ears (12), some of which are a bit tender. I find they get ripped up a bit when I put on/take off my helmet.
Does anyone else have this problem, and how have you solved it? Taking them out is not an option lol.

Just don't get that many piercings in your ears...

Both my ears are stretched to 10mm and I have no problems, so can't help.

Yep, but only have one in each ear. Find I have to wear small sleepers. Try putting some kind of scarf or balaclava on or tape.

I ended up putting smaller earings in the top of my ears, no probs with the lower earings.
Got 6 in my ears.

Yeah, and there's more to come
I haven't tried anything yet, silk sounds like the go I'll see if it helps :)
They all have rings in them atm, I find that's the easiest/most comfortable

It's the polarfleece neck-muff that causes the problem when I take it off.

Try taping your head like the rigby guys do:O
Or use a thin headband like the exercise gurus do

Yep I hear ya. Ive lost count of how many earings Ive lost thanks to helmets. (I normally wear 9) So now I stick with the cheap fugly ones for the top holes and keep the nicer ones in the bottom holes as they don't seem to be such a prob.

I tried taking them out, but what a pain. I now use an HJC helmet which so far hasn't been a prob, and no probs with the pressure on the top rings either. It seems to have the padding in different places to most other helmets Ive had, and even taking it off doesn't seem such a problem (ive not lost any of my jewells since wearing it). Its the carbon fiber model, if you try one on, you'll see what I mean.

I had two eyebrow piercings in each eyebrow (pofile pic)... as well as lots in ears... (now only have two in one side) n I found I had to be careful whilst putting on n taking helmet off as when I caught them it hurt lol

kinda had to put helmet on face first (kinda)... have figured out the perfect way to do it now so its no worries... still catch them occasionally but you'll learn a way to do it thats good for you.

Yay, another piercee!

I have ten in one ear (three in the other) and yes, this is a painful problem. I combatted mine quite easily and you do not need to wear a silk scarf or any othe the like, but if you take my course of action, you'll have obvious holes in your ears for possibly, the rest of your life.

Stop using studs which have butterflies as backers, for one: for another, go to your local piercing shop, and invest in labret studs for the piercings in your upper ears; they have a twist on ball in the front, and the back is flat. Google "labret studs" on images if you aren't completely sure what I mean. Now here's the painful bit. While the lower piercings in the ears, such as in the lobe, or even perhaps conch, daith, helix, tragus etc, will be fine with whatever they were pierced with (though, excepting lobe, they'll have all been done with either rings or labrets as well) the ones in the upper ear were the ones causing me havoc and pain and I assume this is the same for you.

So. Pain: get your piercing shop to stretch all those upper ear piercings to about 16 gauge. It will make them bleed, you may potentially writhe in pain (I did mine myself and I don't want to repeat the experience), but after that, put in all those 16 gauge labret studs you just bought. Your ears will hurt really bad for a while, but once they heal up, you'll find that your helmet causes you no more grief, and that they're actually more secure than studs with butterflies as long as they're put on right.

I've had my ears like that for a year now, and I'm glad I did it.

I have 14 in total, and have lost a few in my short time riding. I used to wear studs but have changed to sleepers and I find that helped a bit. Also I just take a bit of extra time putting my helmet on and taking it off. Doing it slowly helps, it just makes others think you arent used to wearing a helmet though.

Its ok now but I still lose the occasional butterfly.
The only way around it is one of those balaclava thingies but ya can still feel them getting yanked around ...

I just put up with it .

Me, pretty boring - only one set of holes in each ear, but find that sleepers or studs work best. Long hooks with the sticky-out bits on the end hurt when they press into the side of my head, but have never come out in the process of putting on or removing helmet. Rode into town one day wearing a pair of long danglies and learnt very quickly how annoying it is to have them banging on the outside of the helmet! Most frustrating having to wait till i got to my destination before i could yank them out.

New helmet puts a fair amount of pressure on them but it's still an improvement, and I can take it off quickly without looking like a fool lol
Thanks everyone!

Bandaid over each ear - worked on for me when I had four holes in one ear, two in the other. Might have to use those fabric bandaids (extra strong stick factor). And hopefully have long hair to cover the gorgeous apparition when you take your helmet off .....

I have one of these

They are great, and even fit on under my full face

The leather keeps the wind from seeping through, and the fleece inner keeps you warm. Because they velcro around your face your neck is nice and supported in windy conditions, and the gap between your helmet and jacket is fully covered!

Love it love it love it!

I've got belly bars in my ears, and they get caught all the time, but all I do is put the helmit back on then try taking it off again, or if I'm wearing a neck warmer I just pull it up over my piercings so that when I take it off they don't get caught.

Mine get hooked too sometimes - have noticed it happens more often than not when I try and take my helmet off on an angle. Have also found having thread or huggy earings don't snag but with 12 holes, I can only think that it might be cheaper to use ring earings ? Cheers

I know, holy farking thread dredge, but...

Just in case anyone else has recently got some fresh and "tender" ear piercings, and knows a balaclava-scarf-cloth-thingie isn't going to do diddlie farking squat about the actual pain that will be caused when you get your helmet on or off, I found these wee morsels that I am hoping will work a treat. They are ear protectors, used in hair salons.

I used to use press studs instead of butterflies, shave my head and duct tape my lobes to my head.

I also grab the the helmet straps when I'm putting my helmet on or taking it off and and pull them away from my head to slightly enlarge the opening. It used to help. Haven't worn anything in my ears in years though.

Yeah I do that anyway. I am still at the "tender" stage i.e. can't even touch them, I am getting these purely for the healing stage. I am sure I will not have snagging/catching issues in the foreseeable future due to placement of the piercings.
