DR400sm - new at $7995.
leaves you $2k to sort the suspension to make it perfect for you.
not hundreds of horsepower, but a bucket of fun that may not kill you.
then do some trackdays and learn to ride it's dirty little wheels off.

Try out a 05 SV 650...you'll be amazed at how much fun they are. Plus, as a second hand, they usually have got after market pipes which makes them sound so lurvely
So I know you said you want a new bike, but keep your options open. :niceone:
Oh and ride as many as possible and post piccies please! :D
SV650 or Thou would be my choice.
But i'm saving for a Street Triple.....

I've seen a couple of Ducati S4 Monsters up for sale for around your budget. They've got the 916 engine, so are not short of grunt. Cost a little more to service than a Jap bike but nowhere near as bad as some would have you believe.

seconded. drz400sm + orc + full yoshi system + jet kit + k&n = goes like stink and more fun than anything for just $9,415
Went and took a new DRZ400SM out for a ride today, was wicked fun :) Definitely recommend taking one for a test ride

Spend only $7,000-8,000 of it, the rest is wasted. New bikes are a waste of money. As soon as it leaves the showroom it looses between 2 and 3 thousand - why be suckered for that.
This is the time to buy a bike second hand. The market is dead in the winter and all the bargains are there for the picking. If you go shopping now, you get the pick of the bunch for very good money, look at some of the choices if you filter newer than 2000 and 750cc or bigger
- 2001 Aprilia RSV 51k, $8,000+
- 2000 Ducati ST2 18K, $5,500+
- 2003 Ducati Monster 32K, $7,500+
- 2000 Honda VFR800 14K, $7,500 (not a twin but one of the great bikes)
- 2005 Honda VTR 1000 10K, $8,500
- 2005 Suzuki SV1000 22K, $6,950 !!
- 2002 Buell XB92 984cc 24K, $8,000+
- 2003 Honda VTR1000 42k, $8,500
- 2000 Buell Cyclone1200 31K, $5,500 !!
- 2000 Ducati Supersport 900 45K, $7,500+
You get the drift, a lot of bike for sensible money. The insurance is cheaper too.

Good one guys. This isn't a game of 'what we would buy if we had the spare dosh', but suggesting someone a thou for a 2nd bike is plain irresponsible. He was at least being sensible with his original picks.

This would be a goody and better to hone skills than a thou........

I "downgraded" from inline4 litre bikes to a ptwin ER6, best decision I've ever made. I thought I would miss the pure power of litre bikes, but nope, loving every second of my twin with *more* than enough power!
I would say the DR400 or a 600 twin, fun times > being able to go 250kmph !

I assume you mean that not being able to do 250kph is more than compensated for by the fun of a smaller capacity bike.
I agree. A modern 650 which has been looked after will suit you perfectly. Tempting as it is to move to a large engine, it isn't necessary and probably a waste of your money at the moment.
Having said that, the Ducati ST2 on Grub's list at $5,500 hit me hard. I can't imagine it selling that low - more like $7,500 - 8,500 but who knows? It is winter which is a buyers market and a lot of Ducatis have been imported in the past year. Some dealers are just quitting them to roll stock over.
The ST2 is a great bike but the more sensible option is a Japanese 650 for the moment. I'm sure you won't regret it.
